Molasses Bar Day, Ntl.: February 8

National Molasses Bar Day (Treacle Bar Day) celebrates the sweet, nutty cookie-like cakes that are a favorite winter treat. Technically this day is about the cookie, which is dull, and it has no reason for being or sponsor. We propose a better purpose, that it serves as a reminder of a tragic event a century past, even if it doesn't fall on the same day. We're talking about the Great Boston Molasses Flood (Boston Molassacre). On January 15, 1919, an immense storage tank filled with 2.3 million gallons (8,700 m3) of molasses collapsed, sending a thick wave of the sticky liquid through Boston's historic North End. The force of the flood pushed buildings off their foundations and tipped over vehicles and railway cars. Twenty-one people, predominantly immigrants and city workers, died; another 150 were injured. The molasses was stored to make ethanol, which is used in alcohol and munitions. A rapid warming of temperatures that day caused the tank to implode and the city to be flooded. We think remembering the people who died and the dangers associated with leaving tanks unattended during rapid weather changes is a much better tribute to Molasses Bar Day. It is certainly more interesting. Thoughts? After all, bars are like bricks, and bricks are used to rebuild.

Nirvana (salvation) in the Buddhist faith marks the death of Buddha. When the Buddha surpassed 80 years old, a friend Cunda invited him to dinner. Cunda prepared mushrooms, the Buddha's favorite food. But, unknowingly, he included some that were poisonous. Soon the Buddha realized he was dying. The Buddha summoned his followers on his deathbed, determined to ease Cunda's anguish and guilt. "In all my lifetime, two meals stand out supreme: one was the meal that I ate before I sat under the Bo tree, after which I received enlightenment," the Buddha began. "The other, tonight, at the home of my dear friend, Cunda, after which I shall receive Nirvana." Upon saying this, the Buddha passed away.

In the Hindu faith, Chaturthi celebrates Lord Ganesha. Sankashti Chaturthi (Sankata Chaturthi) is observed on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha (the dark lunar phase or the waning phase of the moon). If this Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday, it is called Angarki Sankashti Chaturthi. Devotees observe strict fasting during daylight until darshan (the sight of the moon). Toothache Day (249 AD): February 9

International Toothache Day marks the martyrdom of Saint Apollonia, the patron saint of Dentistry, in 249 AD. Apollonia was a young virgin, a Christian woman, who was killed in a pogrom against Christians in Egypt. Part of her torture included having all her teeth pulled out, which is why she is associated with dentistry. These were the early days of Christianity, nearly four hundred years before Islam and a hundred years before Constantine would convert the entire Roman empire to Christianity. It was a dangerous time to be Christian, and they were hated and hunted by the Hebrews and Romans. This particular pogrom against the Christians began due to an Egyptian poet's prophesying that great harm was to come to the people of Alexandria. The cause, he said, would be the Christians, and therefore, the Christians needed to be eliminated. At the time of Apollonia, living to the age of 50 was considered old. By the time most people died, many had lost their teeth. Today with modern toothpaste and brushes, not to mention dental care, most of us retain our teeth into old age. Today is a day to reflect on dental health's importance, remember Apollonia's sacrifice, and the cost of judging others by their faith. And for those of faith, it is a day to thank God for every tooth we have.
