Each year has its unique focus, with participating in events involving health care organizations, government agencies, and educators. Free pulmonary check-ups may be available in your hometown. Check with your local healthcare provider for listings. This event began in 2002.

CPR Awareness Month (CA): November

CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) Awareness Month challenges Canadians to undergo lifesaving CPR training. The Canadian Red Cross and other organizations hold CPR and first aid lessons throughout the month. Skills taught include assessing if a person is in cardiac arrest, understanding when defibrillation is needed and how to use an AED (automated external defibrillators). Check with your local Red Cross for events in your town.

Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience Month: November

The strength of a nation is dependent upon its infrastructure. Like bones in a body, the infrastructure supports the nation’s ability to move products and services and defend itself. National Critical Infrastructure Protection Month, initially proclaimed by President Obama in December, is now Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience Month in November. It seeks to educate Americans on the importance of maintaining and building power plants, roads, telecommunications infrastructure, public places such as stadiums and parks, and the services need to keep these essential services working and running smoothly. If you’ve ever been to a less developed country than the United States, Canada, or Western Europe, you’ve encountered frustration from a lack of good roads, telecommunications, and even simple things like sewage treatment and proper plumbing. These items don’t just appear and take care of themselves; they are essential to the quality of life and a healthy economy. This month is about appreciating our existing infrastructure and supporting those who maintain it and keep it going. Crohn's & Colitis Awareness Month (CA): November

Crohn's & Colitis Awareness Month in Canada seeks to raise awareness and understanding of Crohn's & Colitis Disease. Canada has one of the world's highest Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis rates. The number of children with this disease has doubled since 1995. Crohn's Disease and Colitis cause inflammation of the gastrointestinal lining, thus making food and nutrient absorption difficult. During this month, people are encouraged to download information about the disease and support those afflicted.

D. Hamilton Jackson was a civil rights advocate and educator in the Danish West Indies. Of African descent, he fought tirelessly for the right to free speech. On September 1, 1915, he achieved his dream by inauguring the island's first press. Independence Day is also called Liberty Day on the islands.

Day of the Dead, Día de los Muertos, is a Mexican celebration highlighting the closeness of family and friends. It celebrates a willingness to pray, remember dead loved ones, and support their spiritual journey. Acknowledged by the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, this is a public and highly celebrated occasion in Mexico. On this day, families build "ofrendas" (altars) that contain sugar skulls and marigolds (the flower of the dead) and samplings of the favorite food of the departed, which are then brought to the graveyard and offered graveside.

Diabetic Eye Disease Month raises awareness about diabetes, diabetic eye disease, the importance of early disease detection, and related preventive health services covered by Medicare. Diabetes can lead to severe complications such as heart disease, stroke, vision loss, kidney disease, nerve damage, and amputation, among others, and it’s a significant risk factor for developing glaucoma. People with diabetes are more susceptible to many other illnesses, such as pneumonia and influenza, and are more likely to die from these than people who do not have diabetes.
