National Manatee Appreciation and Awareness Month falls in November and was established in 1979 in Florida before being recognized nationally in 1980. It raises awareness of the plight of the manatees in the wild and preserves their natural habitat. Manatees, or sea cows, these gentile giants were once mistaken for mermaids. Manatees inhabit rivers, canals, saltwater bays, estuaries, and coastal areas along the southeastern United States. They spend the winter in Florida and migrate north to Virginia and Texas in the summer months. Power boats colliding with the animals and overhunting their meat, oil, and hides have placed the manatee on the Endangered Species List. In 1972, the manatee was designated protected under the Federal Marine Mammal Protection Act. By 1979 then governor of Florida Bob Graham declared November Manatee Awareness Month, thus authorizing the first state-designated protection zones for the marine mammal. In 1980 the US Congress followed suit with a $100,000 allocation to the Marine Mammal Commission and the development of the initial Federal Manatee Recovery Plan by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Mouth Cancer Awareness Month raises awareness of mouth cancer, its causes, and its prevention. Mouth cancer causes more deaths per number of cases than breast cancer, cervical cancer, or melanomas. Tobacco use is still considered the leading cause of mouth cancer. According to the World Health Organization, up to half of the current smokers will die of a tobacco-related illness, including mouth cancer. Drinking to excess can increase the risk of mouth cancer by four times. Those who smoke and drink are up to 30 times more likely to develop mouth cancer. Mouth cancer is twice more common in men than in women, though an increasing number of women are being diagnosed with the disease. Age is another factor, with people over 40 more likely to be diagnosed, though more young people are now being affected than previously. Poor diet is linked to a third of all cancer cases.

No Nuts November: November

No Nut November is one of those silly events that came about based upon dares, likely from a bunch of drunk college students, sometime around 2011, when it first appeared in the Urban Dictionary. There are two ways to look at this month. The G-rated version considers it a month without nuts, no cashews, pecans, or Brazil nuts (peanuts are okay as they are a legume, not a nut). The X-rated version, and why we are pretty sure a group of drunk men created this event, is No Nuts November challenges men to refrain from anything to do with their ding-a-ling and cherry sacks—the kind they come equipped with, generally at birth. The objective of No Nuts November is to ignore the eggplant and meatballs sans sauce for thirty days. It’s a rolling joke with men who will ask each other, “Have you failed No Nut November?” Yes, it’s silly. But the guys seem to have fun with this.

National Georgia Pecan Month kicks off the holiday season with the fruit most people mistake for a nut. It is an awareness campaign to bring attention to the crop and its uses by the Georgia Pecan Commission. Personal Story from Laura: "My first encounter with pecans occurred when I was about six. Mom and Dad had another couple over to play Bridge. It turns out they didn't have enough pecan pie for the adults and kids, so they told us kids, all four of us, that we had to be 18 years of age to eat pecan pie. We believed them, and I would be 18 the first time I tasted pecan pie. It is my favorite today, but I can't believe my parents were so sneaky about it! Or that I believed them. We still laugh about that to this day." So, enjoy your pecans this month, but please don't tell your children they can't eat pecan pie until they are adults. They might believe you!
