During this day, parents and guardians volunteer at the school or pledge a few minutes of their time to help with homework. Sponsored by Project Appleseed, the promotion aims to help low-income families access better Internet and materials that help parents communicate effectively with their children.

Peace Day, World: November 17

On November 17 each year, drive with your headlights on as a public demonstration for peace, and think about peace as you go through your daily activities. Fold some origami cranes (instructions here: http://www.peaceday.org) and place them around your city. They say if you fold 1000 cranes, you will be granted your wish. Let's fold a couple of million cranes and wish for world peace. I want you to start hanging origami cranes around in public. Let's make it so people will see them in shopping malls and parks and hang a crane in your office. Let's make it, so everyone gets a chance to be reminded about peace. Please inform your friends about it so that when people see a crane, someone can explain to them that it is a movement for peace and get them started folding and displaying their own. It will be interesting to see how long it will be before I start seeing cranes other people have folded. Hanging from street signs as I am driving around. Just put them in visible locations. Philosophy Day, World: November 17

The objectives of this day are: 1. To renew the national, sub-regional, regional, and international commitment to philosophy; 2. To foster philosophical analysis, research, and studies on major contemporary issues to respond more effectively to the challenges that are confronting humanity today; 3. To raise public awareness of the importance of philosophy and its critical use in the choices arising for many societies from the effects of globalization or entry into modernity; 4. To appraise the state of philosophy teaching throughout the world, with special emphasis on unequal access; 5. To underline the importance of the universalization of philosophy teaching for future generations. People are encouraged to engage in philosophical dialogues, debates, conferences, exhibitions, and book fairs.

The National Premmie Foundation in Australia, the March of Dimes, and other nation-specific organizations and NGOs promote and sponsor World Prematurity Day each year, seeking to raise awareness about the dangers of preterm birth. Preterm or premature birth is the world's number one killer of babies and young children, accounting for nearly a million deaths yearly. Even if the child survives, being born prematurely can result in lifelong health issues, including cerebral palsy, vision and hearing loss, and mental impairment.

Smokeout, Great American: November 17

The American Cancer Society sponsors the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November. It encourages Americans to quit smoking and was initiated on November 16, 1977. Before this, Arthur P. Mullaney recommended people stop smoking and donate the proceeds to a local school. In 1974, Lynn R. Smith of the Monticello Times of Minnesota promoted a "Don't Smoke Day."

Take a Hike Day: November 17

Take a Hike Day is hosted annually by the American Hiking Society. Its objective is to encourage people to get outdoors and take a hike. The first great hiking trail in the United States was The Appalachian Trail (Maine to Georgia). First envisioned by Benton MacKaye (March 6, 1879 – December 11, 1975) in 1921, the trail would eventually come to fruition and cover nearly 2,200 miles in 1937. It is part of the Triple Crown of Hiking, which includes the Pacific Crest Trail and The Continental Divide Trail.
