Road Traffic Victims Memorial Day, World: November 20

World Road Traffic Victims Memorial Day is held on the third Sunday of November. This day honors the victims and surviving families of road accidents the world over, and it bestows gratitude to the first responders who save lives. Road victim organizations under the European Federation of Road Traffic Victims began observing World Road Traffic Victims Memorial Day in 1995. By 2000, the Pope, NGOs, and other organizations had begun to commemorate victims of traffic fatalities on the third Sunday of November, calling the occasion World Day. October 26, 2005, the UN General Assembly acknowledged it as a World Day.

Summer approaches, which means more time in the sun. National Skin Cancer Action Week in Australia is a joint initiative of the Cancer Council Australia and the Australasian College of Dermatologists. Its primary message: a tan is not healthy. Two-thirds of Australians are diagnosed with skin cancer by age 70, and more than 2,000 die from it annually. National Skin Cancer Action Week is an opportunity to learn about safe sun practices and make the most of your time in the sun without endangering your life.

Stir-up Sunday (UK): November 20

Plum Pudding, also known as Christmas pudding, originated in England and is traditionally made five weeks before Christmas, on Sunday before Advent begins. The day of preparation, "Stir-up Sunday," is a family affair. Each family member or child in the household stirs the pudding and makes a wish. Prunes are the main ingredient, ergo plum pudding. Silver coins for increased wealth, wishbones for good luck, a silver thimble signifying thriftiness, a ring to protect or bring on marriage, and an anchor for safe harbor and security are added to the batter. Traditionally, plum pudding is without refrigeration. When the family was ready to eat, steam was applied to return the moisture.

Transgender Day of Remembrance: November 20

Globally, transgender people are attacked and often killed because of how they present themselves. Transgender Day of Remembrance marks the murder of transgender woman Rita Hester on November 28, 1998. It is a day to remember and honor all those killed for not conforming to social gender norms. Transgender is a subset of homosexuality, commonly referred to as queer or on the "gender spectrum," an idea originating with Alfred Kinsey and popularized during the twenty-teens. Transgender people physically and mentally alter their presentation to coordinate with their feelings. This change is referred to in the community as gender transitioning and requires deploying one or more of the following tools: operations, social engagement, pronouns, and hormone therapy. These changes allow a person to transition in appearance, activity, and presentation from female to male or male to female. A transgender person typically chooses to dress to represent the sex to which they believe they should have been born. A trans-woman is a man who has transitioned into presenting as female. A person referred to as a trans-man is a woman who has transitioned into presenting as a man. In the community, it is common to refer to birth sex as one's "assigned gender" and the transitioning to the opposite as one's "authentic gender." Hormones, behaviors, and surgery can alter many physical traits. They cannot change DNA and the physical ability to become pregnant or impregnate a person of the opposite sex via copulation. Often confused with trans is non-binary. A non-binary person feels male on some days and female on others and presents differently depending upon the day. Non-binary people have not transitioned. Approximately 1.4 million people refer to themselves as transgender worldwide (0.00175%), though this number increased exponentially in Western cultures within Generation Z (those born between 1997-2012) beginning in 2010.

Utpanna Ekadashi (H): November 20

Ekadashi occurs twice a month, each with a different name and significance in its worship of Lord Vishnu. Utpanna or Utpatti Ekadashi falls on the waning moon (Krishan Paksha) fortnight of the Hindu month of Magha. Observance of this vrat removes sins committed during previous and present births (Hindus believe in past lives and reincarnation) via the worship of Lord Vishnu. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Names of months and holidays and the corresponding dates in the Gregorian Calendar may vary widely from one calendar to the next. Determine the proper calendar before attending local events.

National Agriculture Day in Australia celebrates the agricultural industry, which employs over 1.6 million Australians. According to the National Farmers' Federation, "By 2020, half of the world's population will be on Australia's northern doorstep, representing unparalleled opportunities for Australia's economy, especially our dynamic farm sector. Last year, Australian farms surpassed $60 billion in farm gate income. The National Farmers' Federation has the vision to grow this figure to $100 billion by 2030." This event first ran in 2017.

Balloon Day (1783): November 21

Today marks the anniversary of the first manned hot air balloon flight on November 21, 1783, in France by Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandes. This flight began in Paris and floated for 25 minutes before touching down in the suburbs of Paris, five miles away. United States founding father, Benjamin Franklin, witnessed and documented the historic event.

Emmy Awards, Intl.: September 28

The International Emmy Awards honors television films and programs produced outside the US and is presented by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. This awards program aims to promote culture and understanding and expose the American public to the television programs created and produced in various parts of the world. The need for these awards became apparent when the three largest television networks professed disinterest in showing foreign-produced programs. Because of this, the co-founder of the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Ralph Baruch, decided that having an Emmy award for such shows would foster interest. The first award ceremony was held in the Plaza Hotel, New York City, in 1973, with more than 200 guests in attendance. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. False Confession Day: November 21

False Confession Day highlights that just because someone confesses to a crime doesn't mean they did it. Additionally, it took a constitutional amendment in the US and a Supreme Court ruling to ensure all Americans would not be subjected to coercion, torture, or threat of bodily harm during police interrogation. This is not the case in many parts of the world, and the US is often the exception. The landmark case of Brown v. Mississippi, [297 US 278, (1936)], argued before the United States Supreme Court, found that a defendant's involuntary confession, when obtained by police violence, cannot be seen as evidence. The act of doing this, the judges determined, violates the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. According to Saul M. Kassin, a professor of Psychology at Williams College and one of the leading researchers into the phenomenon of false confessions, there are three basic types of false confessions: voluntary false confessions, compliant false confessions, and internalized false confessions. Voluntary false confessions are given absent outside influences. There are various reasons a person may do this, from psychological to protection. Compliant and Internalized false confessions generally occur due to coercion. Safeguards have been added to the US legal system to attempt to detect these in advance. The Innocence Project, a US non-profit that re-presents cases of those convicted of serious crimes, recently determined that 25% of those they've found innocent confess to their crimes. It's unknown if this date came about due to a specific court case or anniversary. November 21 is not the anniversary of the aforementioned legal rulings or the ratification of the 14th Amendment. However, it still is an excellent day to explore the psychology of false confessions and what we can do to prevent the non-guilty from ending up in jail or worse.

Hello Day, World: November 21

Anyone can participate in World Hello Day by simply greeting ten people with a friendly "Hello," "Hola," "Marhban," "Kon'nichiwa," "Habari," "Bonjour," "Shalom," "Olá," or any other language. This greeting demonstrates the importance of personal communication in preserving peace. World Hello Day began in response to the Yom Kippur War between Egypt and Israel in 1973. Since then, World Hello Day is celebrated by people in 180 countries. Today's objective is to greet at least ten people you do not know with "Hello" to promote world peace.
