Ramlila, a play about the life of Rama, is performed; festivities symbolize the victory of good over evil, as illustrated by the day Lord Rama killed the demon Ravana. Energy Efficiency Day, Ntl (US/CA): October 5

Created in 2016, National Energy Efficiency Day or EEDay occurs during Energy Action Month, October, each year. It is a United States and Canadian event supported by multiple groups, including American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), Advanced Energy Economy, Alliance to Save Energy, Natural Resources Defense Council, and the Regional Energy Efficiency Organizations, to name a few. The US Congress officially recognizes the day.

Fat Bear Week: October 5-11

As Autumn progresses, the bears of the world prepare to hibernate through the winter. They spend their summer fattening up and eating to store the food they'll need for the long winter's nap. And boy, do they get fat! So fat that Katmai Conservancy in Alaska hosts an online contest where you can vote for your favorite supersized bear each year. On the Conservancy's website, you'll see each bear's progress ranging from early summer slim to September sumptuous. Typically, about a dozen bears compete yearly, and you simply pick your favorite. Based on votes, the Fat Bear of the Year prize is awarded at the end of the week. It's a fun contest and education on the life of bears. Enjoy!

Nottingham Goose Fair, (UK): September 20-October 9

The Nottingham Goose Fair was first held in the time of Robin Hood in 1284 and has been held nearly every year since. One of the oldest ongoing European festivals, this traditional country fair attracts over a half million people a year (that's 5X the size of London during King Henry VIII's reign!). World Teacher Day is promoted by UNESCO, the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNDP, UNICEF, and the Education International (EI). The day honors teachers and their vital role in raising our children and preparing them for the workforce and adulthood. The date commemorates October 5, 1966, when the intergovernmental conference convened in Paris. Here they adopted the UNESCO/ILO Recommendations concerning the Status of Teachers worldwide. This event has been recognized each year since 1994.

Armed Forces Day (EG)(1973): October 6

In 1967 the nation-state of Israel invaded Egypt, Jordanian territory, and Syria, taking control over the Sinai Peninsula, East Jerusalem, the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and the Golan Heights in what would be called the 6-Day War. On October 6, 1973, Egypt and Syria attacked Israel to reclaim lost territory, putting Israel on the defensive for the first time since its founding. Until this time, no nation had orchestrated the first strike on Israel. The surprise attack led to years of animosity between the two nations, which was finally put to rest at the Camp David Accords (1978), with US President Jimmy Carter brokering peace between the two neighboring countries. Part of that agreement returned the Sinai Peninsula and control of the Suez Canal to Egypt. Israel then became the top recipient of US aid worldwide, with Egypt benefiting as the second. Peace and aid allocations have held ever since. Today is a National Egyptian holiday commemorating the beginning of the war that would lead to reclaiming of Egyptian territory.

Bring Your Bible to School Day is an initiative led by the conservative Christian evangelical group Focus on the Family. It encourages students to bring their bible to public and private schools on the first Thursday in October, proselytize and share their faith journey with fellow students and teachers. Each year this event draws over 500,000 students from 50,000 schools nationwide. Participants are encouraged to sign up on the Focus on the Family website and download supporting materials.

Cerebral Palsy Day, World: October 6

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a complex, lifelong disability. It primarily affects movement, but people with CP may also have visual, learning, hearing, speech, epilepsy, and intellectual impairments. It can be mild – a weakness in one hand – to severe – where people have little control over movements or speech and may need 24-hour assistance. People living with CP can experience a range of responses from others in their communities. They face deep-seated but misguided sympathy or pity on one end of the spectrum. Though intentions are good, they infantilize the person with CP. They can be smothered with (too much) love and spoken to in a simple, childlike way. Others can subconsciously over-protect a person with CP and thus prevent them from having essential life experiences. On the other end of the spectrum, CP is viewed through deep-seated cultural beliefs. It may be seen as validation of superstitions about the mother or wrath upon a family. Some even believe that CP is contagious or that a child with CP brings shame to a family. Mothers can be abandoned with their children, or a person with CP lives their lives in an institution. And in the middle are thousands of fine people who still find it difficult to make eye contact or know how to communicate with someone who has CP. It is not that they feel ill will; it is just best—maybe even polite—to not engage. There is nothing to be gained in blaming people for their ignorance about CP. Instead, we will work to put an end to it. We have the ability and the moral obligation to ensure everyone knows the truth and acts accordingly. Bringing awareness to these issues and making tools available to those worldwide affected by Cerebral Palsy is the purpose of World Cerebral Palsy Day.

German-American Day (1683): October 6

On October 6, 1683, thirteen families from Krefeld, Germany, arrived in Philadelphia and created Germantown, Pennsylvania. It was the first settlement of Germans in what would become the United States. Today marks the anniversary of that community's establishment and German Americans' contribution to the history of America. German-American Day was first declared as German American Heritage Day in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan. Today, nearly a quarter of American citizens trace their ancestry to Germany. Many modern American traditions also have their roots in Germany, Christmas included, and this day celebrates that and strengthens the friendship between the two nations.

Ivy Day (IE)(1891): October 6

Charles Stewart Parnell (June 27, 1846 – October 6, 1891) was a leader in the Irish Parliament who advocated for home rule. He is considered the man responsible for giving Ireland a sense of herself. Each year, on his death anniversary, Ireland celebrates Ivy Day by wearing a sprig of ivy on the lapel. The custom derives from the short story "Ivy Day in the Committee Room" by James Joyce, who also wrote "Ulysses."
