African Penguin Awareness Day raises awareness about the beautiful and endangered African penguins and informs the public on what we can do to help. Overfishing and pollution have endangered these birds. SANCCOB and other environmental groups host this event each year. Supporting it can be as simple as adopting a baby penguin chick from their website. If in Capetown, check out the Penguin Festival, which occurs this month.

Tag, You're It Day: October 8

Tag-You're-It Day celebrates the childhood game of Tag played by chasing and touching someone (tagging them). The "tagged" person becomes the chaser upon the tagger, yelling: 'Tag, you're it!' Tag also has an adult function, known as telephone tag. To play, you call someone and leave a message. Then they call you back and leave a message. You call them back and leave a message, and so on, and so on, and so on. The childhood version is much more fun to play.

Wife Carrying Championships, Ntl. (US-ME): October 8

Founded in 1999, the North American Wife Carrying Championships originate from the Finnish games, which began in 1991. For spectators, this 278-yard race of men carrying their wives through various obstacles is quite a spectacle and a good time for all. This race determines the winner for the US and Canada. October 9, 1446, King Sejong (Yi Dynasty) created the 24-character phonetic alphabet of Korea called Hangul. It allowed people speaking other languages to write out the sounds of the words represented by characters in Korean, making it easier to communicate with different cultures and learn how to speak Korean.

Baby Loss Awareness Week (UK): October 9-15

Baby Loss Awareness Week runs in October each year. It is an opportunity for bereaved parents, family members, and friends to commemorate their babies' all-too-brief lives, knowing that thousands of other families elsewhere in the world will be doing the same. The week also provides a crucial opportunity for people to talk openly about the subject and raise awareness of baby loss. The week ends with Baby Loss Awareness Day on October 15th, a date recognized as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day worldwide. Here in the UK, we invite you to participate in the global 'Wave of Light.' Light a candle at 7 pm and leave it burning for at least 1 hour. This can be done individually, in a group, at home, or in a communal space. Wherever you do this, you will unite with others worldwide in honor of those babies who lit up our lives for a short time. History of Baby Loss Awareness Week October 15th, 2002, was the inaugural Baby Loss Awareness Day in the UK and was initiated by a group of parents inspired by Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day in the United States. Through the sale of handmade blue and pink ribbon pins, they raised several thousand pounds for UK organizations supporting bereaved parents. 2003: The campaign saw the day expanded to a week with events across the UK. The first official 'Wave of Light' service in the UK was held at the American Church in London and attended by representatives and members of each participating organization. There were also services held across the UK from Scotland to Surrey. Once again, the ribbon pins were made and sold by bereaved parents. 2004: The campaign was a more formal collaboration between the five organizations involved, which included Sands, the Miscarriage Association, the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust, ARC, and Babyloss.com. The ribbon pins were commercially manufactured, and balloon releases were held in several locations. The group organized a secular service at the Royal Statistical Society in London, and there were over twenty other events around the UK. In 2006 the distinctive two-color ribbon was introduced, and bereaved parents once again made the ribbon pins with the help of their family and friends. Since 2010 Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, has played a pivotal role in the organization of the week and, since 2014, has taken a lead role in promoting the week as part of its work raising awareness of the issues surrounding pregnancy and baby loss in the UK.

The Chicago Marathon is one of several major marathons each year in the United States and worldwide. In November 1976, at the Metropolitan YMCA on LaSalle St., five key founders of what would eventually become the Bank of America Chicago Marathon met to begin discussions and planning. Those present included Wayne Goeldner, physical education director of the Hyde Park YMCA; Wendell "Wendy" Miller, a partner in a financial advising firm and founder of Midwest Masters Running Club; Bill Robinson, Executive Director of Friends of Parks; Sharon Meir, Director of Women's Sports, at the Loop Center YMCA; and Dr. Noel Nequin, Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at the Swedish Covenant Hospital. At this meeting, the group decided it was time for a marathon in Chicago. The first race occurred in 1977. Clergy Appreciation Day: October 9

Clergy Appreciation Day falls on the second Sunday of October during Clergy Appreciation Month. This event began as Pastor Appreciation Day, founded by Jerry Frear of Under His Wings. It later became Clergy Appreciation Month, a month open to faith leaders (Rabbis, Monks, Imams, Priests) of all faiths. Frear started the original Pastor Appreciation Day based upon a survey he and his staff conducted in 1992 that found that many of the clergy were unhappy in their jobs. The day focuses on celebrating everything faith leaders do to minister to their flocks and support the local community. Over a few years, it became clear that an entire month was needed and that clergy of other faiths should also be recognized. The focus on appreciating clergy seems to be working. When asked today, most faith leaders are devoted to their work and have a strong desire to work with their communities. Clergy Appreciation Month is about saying thank you to the shepherds of faith and learning more about what they do daily.

Emergency Nurses Week: October 9-15

Since 1989, the Emergency Nurses Association has recognized the second Wednesday in October as Emergency Nurses Day, a day honoring emergency nurses for their commitment to patient care. In 2001, ENA expanded the celebration to devote an entire week to honoring emergency nurses because one day is not enough to recognize all contributions made by emergency nurses. During a year when the Zika virus, opioids and heroin, and the mental health crisis made national headlines, emergency nurses compassionately connected with and cared for their community of patients and coworkers. This week is about honoring these frontline workers in the healthcare field.
