Hispanic Heritage Day (1821): September 15

Hispanic Heritage Day falls on September 15 and initiates National Hispanic Heritage Month. What started as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 was expanded to a month under President Ronald Reagan. By August 17, 1988, it became a Public Law 100-402. September 15 was chosen as Hispanic Heritage Day because it marks independence day in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

Patients and caregivers: When people with Lymphoma and their family and friends pay attention to the small things – like emotional support, lending a hand, or knowing your subtype – it can make a significant difference. Health care professionals: Make time for the small things that make the biggest difference for patients, like making time to discuss their specific subtype. The public: Pay attention to the small things and speak to your doctor if you notice the signs and symptoms of Lymphoma. They can be similar to other less severe illnesses and can be mistaken for flu or fatigue.

Sankashti Chaturthi (H): September 13

In the Hindu faith, Chaturthi celebrates Lord Ganesha. Sankashti Chaturthi (Sankata Chaturthi) is observed on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha (dark lunar phase or the waning phase of the moon). If this Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday, it is called Angarki Sankashti Chaturthi. Devotees observe strict fasting during daylight until darshan (the sight of the moon). Prayers to Lord Ganesha precede the breaking of the fast. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Uncle Sam Day (1813): September 13

Today marks the anniversary of the creation of "Uncle Sam" in 1813. Uncle Sam is one of the most recognized symbols of the United States. During the War of 1812, soldiers stationed in Troy, New York, received rations of meat stamped with a "U.S." The supplier was Samuel Wilson. Eventually, soldiers began referring to the meat deliveries as Uncle Sam, the legend goes, and an icon was born. The first image of Uncle Sam premiered on this day in 1813. But, it would not be the last. The image of Uncle Sam in a white beard wearing a stars-and-stripes suit originated with Thomas Nast in 1869. You know his work. Nast is one of the first prolific political cartoonists. He created the image of the modern Santa Claus as a jolly bearded man in a red suit, the donkey for the Democratic Party, and the elephant for the Republican Party. However, the most famous representation of Uncle Sam was inspired by a British recruitment poster and came from the mind of James Montgomery Flagg in 1917. In this WWI poster, Uncle Sam is seen wearing a tophat and a blue jacket and is pointing straight to the viewer stating, "I Want You for the U.S. Army." The poster was effective and has become part of American iconography. In 1961, Congress issued a resolution recognizing Uncle Sam of Troy, New York, and erected a monument in his honor.

Guitar Flat-picking Championship and Walnut Valley Festival (US-KS): September 14-18

The Walnut Valley Association was formed in 1972 to produce the Walnut Valley National Guitar Flat-Picking Championships Festival, also known as the Flat-Picking Championships, the Walnut Valley Festival, or simply Winfield, by long-time attendees. Evolving from two days to its current five days, held the third weekend of September, it endeavors to produce family entertainment on four stages simultaneously; a large, quality, juried arts and crafts fair; workshops; and acoustic instrument contests. Currently, the event hosts 30 performances and eight rounds, including two international and five national, with one for locals. Along with the National Flat Pick Championships and the International Finger Style Championships, the Walnut Valley Festival hosts the International Autoharp, National Mandolin, National Mountain Dulcimer, National Hammered Dulcimer, National Bluegrass Banjo, and Walnut Valley Old Time Fiddle Championships.

Eat a Hoagie Day celebrates the submarine sandwich. A hoagie is a large Italian-style sandwich resting on a long roll, usually on Italian or French bread. It's sliced lengthwise and filled with meat, cheese, veggies, seasoning, and sauces. The hoagie originated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, though by whom remains disputed.
