Battle of Britain Day (UK) (1940): September 15

Battle of Britain marks the turning point of the 4 month attack by Nazi Germany on England. The battle occurred during the summer and fall of 1940. By this time, World War II approached its first anniversary, and Hitler's forces had over-run much of Europe. Britain was the final prize he wanted, and he set his sights on the island nation. Up until this time, the German military appeared to be unstoppable. Hitler believed the air assault on Britain in July of 1940 would be easy. However, the English had a secret weapon, the Dowding System, which allowed the Brits to deploy their air force throughout the country, back by radar. The Dowding System provided early warning of attacks, allowing the Royal Air Force to engage the Luftwaffe effectively. On September 7, London became the target of the bombing campaigns. By September 15, 1940, the British Royal Air Force got the upper hand. Though the battle would continue into October, today is the day it became clear to the German high command that taking Britain would require more resources and time. They eventually withdrew, and Hitler's forces never conquered Britain. Within 14 months, the United States would enter the war.

Reynolds’ book ‘The Dot’ on September 15, 2009. The observance cultivates creativity and confidence by following the story of The Dot. A teacher challenges a student to trust in her abilities and “make her mark.” Thus, she begins her life journey of discovery with a single dot on the paper. The Dot Day website has multiple resources for teachers and parents of homeschoolers to use to make the most of International Dot Day. This event falls on September 15 unless the 15th is a weekend. Then it falls on the nearest school day.

September 13 is the anniversary of the first New York City Marathon in 1970. The event was held at Central Park and organized by Fred Lebow and Vince Chiappetta. Fifty-five out of 127 participants completed the race, with the sole female runner backing out due to illness. Prizes consisted of wristwatches and recycled trophies. Today, over 50,000 people take part representing all genders, and the New York Marathon is the largest in the world.

National Peanut Day honors the versatile food. Peanuts are legumes, a vegetable, and a part of the pea family. Despite their name, they are not nuts. According to fossils, peanuts originated in the Zaña Valley of northern Peru about 8,500 years ago, though they've changed from their original consistency through cultivation. By the 15th century, the legume was grown throughout Central and South America and The Caribbean; Spanish and Portuguese explorers brought peanuts to Africa, Europe, and Asia. Eventually, they were introduced to North America through African slaves in the 1700s. Today, nearly 50 million metric tons of peanuts are grown annually, with 50% cultivated in three countries: China, India, and Nigeria. Sudan is the fourth largest producer, followed by the United States at number five. Peanuts are packed with protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals, making them a nutritious and affordable staple. Pickles for Snack Day celebrates the popular sweet or tangy snack food and garnish. Cucumbers, the raw vegetable of pickles, originated in India. Near 2030BC, cucumbers were brought into the Tigris Valley and began to make their way into Europe. Pickling is a food preservation process of marinating vegetables in vinegar and spices. By 805BC, philosopher Aristotle sang their praises as a healthy and healing food. In North America, explorers discovered wild cucumbers growing in Canada in 1535. By 1606, pickles were being produced commercially in the future United States. Over six billion pounds of pickles are consumed annually in the United States alone.
