Although the 'official' Google definition of a dork describes one as a "dull, slow-witted, or socially inept person," the modern version is quirky. Yes, these eccentrics might not follow the usual trends or be with the in-crowd. Still, dorks are often some of the most extraordinary people around. Being cool is not a requirement to make it in life, so kudos to all dorks who choose to remain faithful to living the life they want!

Aboriginal History Month, Ntl. (CA): June

Since 2009, June has been National Aboriginal History Month in Canada. June 21 is set aside each year as a day to honor the culture and contributions of native Canadians. Often referred to as the First Nations, including the Inuit and Métis tribes. Royal Proclamation of 1763 is the foundational document and agreement between the First Nations people and the Crown. It laid the basis for Canada's territorial evolution. Concurrently The Treaty of Paris in 1763 ended more than 150 years of European competition and conflict in Canada. France ceded its colonial territories to Britain, becoming the primary European power in most of North America. The Spanish Empire extended into California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. France maintained its hold until 1803 of what would later be called the Louisiana Purchase. The First Nations comprise six geographical Groups: Woodland: Living in the boreal forest in the eastern part of the country; Iroquoian: inhabited the southernmost area Plains: Dwelling in the grasslands of the Prairies; Plateau: Ranging from the semi-desert conditions in the south to high mountains in the north; Pacific Coast: Living in the coastal regions of British Columbia Mackenzie and Yukon River Basins: Inhabiting the northern areas adjacent to Alaska.

Aphasia Awareness Month is Sponsored by the National Aphasia Association each June to raise public awareness and understanding of aphasia and provide support to all persons with aphasia and their caregivers. Aphasia is an impairment of language, affecting the production or comprehension of speech and the ability to read or write. Aphasia is always due to injury to the brain-most commonly from a stroke, particularly in older individuals. But brain injuries resulting in aphasia may also arise from head trauma, from brain tumors, or from infections. Aphasia can be so severe as to make communication with the patient almost impossible, or it can be very mild. It may affect mainly a single aspect of language use, such as the ability to retrieve the names of objects, or the ability to put words together into sentences, or the ability to read. More commonly, however, multiple aspects of communication are impaired, while some channels remain accessible for a limited exchange of information. It is the job of the professional to determine the amount of function available in each of the channels for the comprehension of language, and to assess the possibility that treatment might enhance the use of the channels that are available. The hope is that by raising awareness through Aphasia Awareness Month aphasia will be a commonly understood word and where all persons with aphasia, regardless of individual differences, their families, health professionals, and the public have access to appropriate education and resources that would enhance their potential for an acceptable quality of life.

Baby Boomers Recognition Day: June 1

Baby Boomers Recognition Day in the US and it is sponsored by Dorothy Zjawin of New Jersey. This event used to occur on the first day of summer. Additionally, there was a previous event of the same name on August 17 each year. That event's website went dark in 2016. However, the month of August is Boomers Making a Difference Month, sponsored by another group. Until the 21st Century Baby Boomers, those born between 1946 and 1964 were the largest generation the world had ever seen. They earned their name due to the 'baby boom' that ensued as soldiers throughout the world returned home from WWII. Boomers are split into two groups: Premier baby boomers 1945-1954 and secondary boomers from 1955-1964.
