The Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Ontario designated June as the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Awareness Month. During this month, the Association educates the public about this condition. Spina Bifida is a birth defect occurring in the first month of the pregnancy, before most women know they are pregnant. It results in permanent damage to the spinal column and nervous system of the child. Hydrocephalus is a condition where fluid accumulates in the brain cavities, causing the veins to swell and brain damage.

There are local events that people can participate such as seminars, fun runs and symposiums. Sponsored by the Heart and Stroke Foundation, this campaign also allows people to learn more about the more innovative approach in treating patients who suffered from strokes.

June was designated by the late US President Ronald Reagan as the Zoo and Aquarium Month in in 1982. This celebration has since been observed every June and is supported by zoos and aquariums throughout the nation. The first zoo ever opened in the United States was the Philadelphia Zoo. It was established on July 1, 1874. At the time it had 1,000 animals. Today it has over 1,300.

Gun Violence Awareness Day, Ntl.(1998): June 2

Wear Orange on June 2nd to honor the memory of the over 30,000 people a year that die from gun violence in the United States (with an additional 70,000+ injured). Of these, 1/3 are homicides and 2/3 accidental. National Gun Violence Awareness Day takes place on the birthday of Hadiya Pendleton, (June 2, 1998). Hadiya was killed by gunfire on January 21, 2013 at the age of 15.
