Cognac Day: June 4

National Cognac Day celebrates cognac, one of the most sought after forms of hard liquor. It is a status symbol in China and the United States, the world's two largest consumers. Cognac is a brandy named after the town of Cognac, France and was first distilled in the 17th Century. In order for the brandy to be called a Cognac, wines are distilled in copper pot stills twice and then aged in French oak barrels produced on Limousin and Troncais for a minimum of two years. National Cognac Day is sponsored by the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac (BNIC).

Shavuot (Shavuos) also known as the Feast of Weeks and Pentecost, is a Jewish observance that is celebrated on the sixth day of Sivan. It commemorates the wheat harvest and the day that God delivered the Torah on Mount Sinai, which united the tribe of Israel. Part of the Shalosh Regalim, it is a Biblical festival that calls for pilgrimage; Shavuot wraps up with the Counting of the Omer. Shavuot and the Passover are linked to each other. The Passover recounts the sparing of death to the 1st born son of the Hebrews by God. Shavuot celebrates the giving of the Torah and the unity of the twelve tribes as one people serving God. Shovuot is celebrated as a single day holiday in Israel. Traditions include women and girls lighting candles in the evening and public readings or the Torah at temple.

Trails Day, Ntl.: June 4

National Trails Day the first Saturday of June. Sponsored by the American Hiking Society, this promotion aims to raise awareness of the benefits of the trails, encourage people to take part in trail hiking and to become vigilant in trail maintenance. Created more than 30 years ago, this event was first organized by outdoor enthusiasts and government officials who wanted to show to the public the vast resources of the interconnecting National Trails System. This celebration also honors the volunteers, who care for trails and keep them pristine.

15th of Khordad (IR)(1963): June 5

June 5, 1963 is the anniversary of an uprising in Iran, referred to in country as the 15th of Khordad. Iranian historians and the people point to this event as the beginning of the Islamic Revolution. The event began with a speech by Imam Seyed Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini, who would go on to lead the opposition to the repressive monarchy. He would later be known to the West as Ayatollah Khomeini. His speech exposed back channel and collusion between the Pahlavi regime and the state of Israel. Angered by the disclosure, the people rose up in protest. Agents of the government intervened, arresting and killing several of the protesters. The actions of the 15th of Khordad were the first time the people openly challenged the much hated regime. Khomeini would go on to lead the revolutionaries and ultimately depose the Shah in 1979. That deposition ushered in the current Iranian Republic headed by an Ayatollah and governed by a President. The 15th of Khordad is a national holiday in Iran.

6-Day War Begins (1967): June 5

The Six-Day War (June 5-10, 1967) was a strategic operation to expand Israel's land holdings (referred to by the settler movement as Erez Israel) and military supremacy in the Middle East. The West Bank is home to one of the largest aquifers in the Middle East, the Gaza Strip has natural gas reserves, and the Golan Heights of southern Syria are prime farmland. The Six-Day War was a stunning victory for the Israeli military. On that, everyone agrees. Historians have since removed much of the idealized thinking surrounding this event; the chief idea is that the state of Israel was under imminent threat of attack and needed to strike first. It was not. Backchannel talks between the United States and Egypt over the Sinai Peninsula were occurring when Israel attacked Egypt and Syria without provocation. Israel was not under threat, and declassified documents from the Israeli military prove the state knew it was not under threat. The area of historic Palestine that Israel conquered in 1967 is known as the Occupied Territories. The Sinai Peninsula, also captured, was returned to Egypt in part during the 1973 war between Israel and Egypt, and later in stages beginning in 1979, following the peace agreement between the states of Israel and Egypt, brokered by US President Jimmy Carter. This 1978 peace agreement is called the Camp David Accords. The Six-Day War continues to resonate as a foundational event creating the current facts on the ground in Israel. It marks the beginning of the complete military occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights. There are several excellent books written in the past decades that benefit from declassified historical documents on this event: Ilan Pappe's "The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine" Benny Morris' "The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem Revisited" Jimmy Carter's "Peace, not Apartheid." David Hirst's "Gun and the Olive Branch: The Roots of Violence in the Middle East" Rashid Khalid's "The Iron Cage: The Story of the Palestinian Struggle for Statehood" Tom Segev's "1967: Israel, the War, and the Year that Transformed the Middle East".
