National Bug Busting Day occur three times per year in the United Kingdom: January, June and October. It is a concentrated effort to stem the tide of lice infections within schools and the general population. The government, through the registered charity Community Hygiene Concern, teaches parents, educators and pharmacists how to detect and stop the spread of head lice and provide affordable Bug Busting kits. Community Bug Busting Days was started by the late Dr. RJ Donaldson, affectionately known as Paddy. Dr. Donaldson demonstrated in the 1970s that an intensive detection/treatment campaign can dramatically cut the prevalence of head lice. He was the tireless mentor of the Bug Busting Days organized by Community Hygiene Concern, taking a personal interest from 1986 in our development of wet methods of detection in preference to less effective dry or damp methods. Today Bug Busting Days are organized in partnership with the Department of Health. Lice are a big problem in schools. These parasites, once they infect an individual, can be very difficult to get rid of. The following are some facts: The eggs of head lice usually take 7 to 10 days to hatch. Combing dry or damp hair with a fine-tooth comb is not a reliable way to detect lice. Metal combs are not suitable for louse detection because these combs are primarily nit combs. Lice caught between the tightly spaced teeth remain unnoticed against the metal and can be combed back into the hair unharmed at subsequent strokes. There are no studies proving that wet head lice grasp hairs more tightly, thus hampering their removal with a fine-tooth comb. It is not scientifically proven that head-to-head contact must be prolonged to catch lice - close contact is enough. Head lice are a community problem. Approximately 20% of head lice cases occur in people over 16 years of age or under 4 years old.

You know it is Fruit Fly Frenzy time when you kick back to enjoy a nice glass of Cabernet and suddenly notice tiny flies inhabiting your glass' rim. Or you set the bananas out to ripen, only to see a circle dance of winged creatures excitedly hovering about. Yup! It is that time of year again. Fortunately, it doesn't last that long. Fruit flies have a lifespan of 40-50 days, and the female will lay several batches of eggs during that period. Alcohol and fermenting fruit attracts them, and they will lay hundreds of eggs in a couple hours, which hatch a few hours later. Ergo, Fruit Fly Frenzy. The best you can do to prevent Fruit Fly Frenzy is use netting canopies over your fresh fruit and place a coaster over the mouth of your wine glass. Apple cider and dish soap will attract them as well...and keep them out of your fruit and win.

Magna Carta Day (1215): June 15

June 15 marks the anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta in 1215 AD. It is the cornerstone of modern legal contracts. The Magna Carta Libertatum is a charter agreed to by King John of England at Runnymede, near Windsor and forms the basis for Western civilization and property law and rights. First drafted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, to make peace between the unpopular King and a group of rebel barons, it promised the protection of church rights, protection for the barons from illegal imprisonment, access to swift justice, and limitations on feudal payments to the Crown, to be implemented through a council of 25 barons. Neither side really stood behind their commitments and a war broke out. But two years later, when the war ended, a peace treaty was agreed upon and the document was reintroduced and got the name Magna Carta. The charter became part of the English political life and was renewed by each monarch.

A highlight of Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, sponsored each June by Bowel Cancer Australia, is Red Apple Day. Australians are encouraged to support the vital work of Bowel Cancer Australia through the purchase of an Apple Pin and apple themed fundraising events. Bowel Cancer kills 10 Australians every day and is the second most common type of newly diagnosed cancer in Australia and the second biggest cancer killer after lung cancer. However, Bowel Cancer is the one of the most curable types of cancer if found early. AN APPLE FOR THE DAY The 'apple pin' symbolizes our bowel cancer message. The outline of the apple logo appears as an abstract of a human colon. The small hole in the apple is caused by a worm. If detected early and removed, the worm is unable to continue affecting the apple or the health of the tree. It's the same with people. If bowel cancer is detected early it can be treated successfully and people can continue to enjoy life. Apples are also a nutritious source of dietary fiber.

Arjan Dev (S) (1606) : June 16

Today is the anniversary of the Martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Sahib, who was born on what would today be May 2 1563 in the Gregorian calendar. Arjan was the fifth of the Ten Gurus of Sikhism, achieving that title on September 16, 1581. He was assassinated on June 16, 1606 and is the first Sikh guru martyred. This is the day when those of the Christian faith celebrate Corpus Christi, or "Feast of the Body of Christ". It occurs each year on the Thursday following Trinity Sunday. It is a holy day solemnly commemorating the receiving of the Holy Eucharist (communion).
