As the weather warms and the grass grows, Greencare for the Troops Week encourages volunteers to help with outdoor care (mowing lawns, pulling weeds, watering plants) at the homes of families of deployed active servicemen and women, the deceased, elderly, and injured veterans. Project Evergreen also hosts a Snowcare for the Troops Week each winter. Juneteenth (1865): June 19

Juneteenth marks the actual end of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865, nearly two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery in the United States. It is the day when the slaves of Galveston, Texas, finally learn of their release from slavery. A reading of the Emancipation Proclamation and the singing of traditional African American songs continue the public celebrations. Juneteenth is a national holiday in the United States.

Lightning Awareness Week, Ntl.: June 19-25

National Lightning Safety Awareness week was started in 2001 to call attention to this underrated killer. Since then, lightning fatalities in the United States have dropped from about 50 per year to about 30. This reduction in fatalities is largely due to greater awareness of the lightning danger, and people seeking safety when thunderstorms threaten. During National Lightning Safety Awareness Week, people are encouraged to learn more about lightning and lightning safety.

Sauntering Day, World: June 19

World Sauntering Day is the day that people are encourage to literally stop and smell the roses, that is, slow the pace of life and enjoy it. It is believed that World Sauntering Day started in the Grand Hotel in Mackinac, Michigan in 1979, the hotel with the longest porch in the world at the time. The event was created by W.T. Rabe as a response to the increasing popularity of joggers in the area as a way of encouraging people to appreciate the world around us by taking things slow. This event is currently unsponsored.

Sexual Violence in Conflict, Day for the Elimination of: June 19

Rape of both men and women has been used as a weapon in war as long as war has existed. Each year the United Nations seeks to raise awareness of its use in war, the devastating effects it has on its victims and promote accountability from its perpetrators. Today is the anniversary of the resolution's adoption. From the Resolution of June 19, 2015 adopted by the General Assembly: Noting that civilians account for the vast majority of those adversely affected by armed conflict, that women and girls are particularly targeted by the use of sexual violence, inter alia by terrorist and extremist groups, including as a tactic of war to humiliate, dominate, instill fear in, disperse and/or forcibly relocate civilian members of a community or ethnic or religious group, and that sexual violence perpetrated in this manner may in some instances persist after the cessation of hostilities, and recognizing that men and boys are also victims of sexual violence in conflict, Condemning in the strongest terms all sexual and other forms of violence committed against civilians in armed conflict and post-conflict situations, inter alia, rape, sexual slavery, enforced prostitution, forced pregnancy, enforced sterilization or any other form of sexual violence of comparable gravity, Recognizing the importance of providing timely assistance and increasing access to health care and other multi-sectoral services for survivors of sexual violence and of promoting their rehabilitation and non-stigmatization.

Sickle Cell Day, World: June 19

World Sickle Cell Day is celebrated on June 19th of each year, is recognized globally and was created by the United Nations by resolution. Sickle Cell is an inherited blood based disorder affecting haemoglobin, the characteristic of blood that makes it red. Symptoms include anaemia and extreme pain when red blood cells stick together and block blood flow and oxygen in small blood vessels. This event is separate from Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month, which is observed in September in the United States.

The American Bald Eagle became the official bird and symbol of the United States on June 20, 1782 when the US congress adopted the official seal of the United States. It took six years to agree on the design, which is today one of the most recognized seals in history. On this day, people are encouraged to adopt-a-bald eagle and help in the rehabilitation of it natural habitat learn about the American Bald Eagle. President Ronald Reagan decreed American Bald Eagle Day on January 28, 1982.

Anne & Samantha Day: June 20*

Anne and Samantha Day occurs on the Summer and Winter Solstice to honor the work of two young women who died to young, and to push for postage stamps to be issued commemorating their contributions to world peace and understanding. Anne is for Anne Frank, the author of the Diary of Anne Frank. Anne died in a concentration camp less than two months before the end of WWII in Europe. She was just sixteen years old. Samantha is for Samantha Smith who is known as the world's youngest ambassador. She wrote a letter to the head of the Soviet Union, Yuri Andropov, congratulating him on his new job and bring to understand the Cold War. After a couple of letters, she finally received an answer from the leader. This got her an invitation to visit, from which she wrote a book. Samantha died on August 25, 1985 in a plane crash. She was only 13.
