The ALD was founded in 1958 when Kwame Nkrumah convened the First Conference of Independent States in Accra, Ghana. The event was attended by eight independent African states. In commemoration, the 15th of April was declared Africa Freedom Day with the goal of marking each year of progress via the liberation movement. The day symbolizes the determination of the people of Africa to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation, often referred to as either imperialism or colonialism. Between 1958 and 1963 national and class struggles intensified in Africa and the developing world. Seventeen countries in Africa won their independence and 1960 was proclaimed the ‘Year of Africa’. The United States and European countries were largely responsible for the colonialist and exploitive endeavors in the region and developing world and often did not relinquish power easily. During the 1960s, it is now known that the US government sponsored the assassinations and attempts at assassinations on several of the regions new leaders. The most overt response included sending U.S. troops into Vietnam and the uprising in Algiers. Trends toward communism and socialism were often the lightning rod used to create domestic buy-in. The time had come however, in Africa, for self-determination. On May 25, 1963, thirty-one African heads of state convened a summit meeting to found the Organization of African Unity (OAU). African Freedom Day was later changed to African Liberation Day and its date to the 25th of May in memory of this meeting.

Brown-Bag-It Day, Ntl.: May 25

The National Brown-Bag-It Day celebrates the brown paper lunch bags used mainly by schoolboys and schoolgirls in the U.S. Ironically, the brown paper bag and the way to mass produce it, was invented by school teacher Francis Wolle in 1852. Wolle and his brother patented their machine on October 26, 1852 and began producing bags as the Union Paper Bag Company. Additional patents were later filed by others that improved upon the original bag including female inventor Margret Knight’s 1870 patent that strengthened the bags and made them foldable; Charles Stilwell in 1883 who made the bags with square bottoms, allowing them to stand on their own; and Black American inventor William Purvis, whom further the bag making machine in 1890. This day does not appear to be an anniversary.

Geek Pride Day (1977): May 25

Geek Pride Day is an annual celebration of geek culture in the US observed since 2008 on the anniversary of the release of the first Star Wars film, May 25, 1977. In 1998 Tim Mc Eacher organized several unconnected events called Geek Pride Festival at a bar in Albany, New York. While it's a US national event, Geek Pride Day's been acknowledged and celebrated in Canada and Europe too, as well as several other cities such as Halifax, Nova Scotia; Budapest, Hungary; Tel Aviv, Israel; Timişoara, Romania and others.

The world’s oldest known wine was discovered in 2003. Its vintage? 6000 BC. The containers these first wine makers used were more like the box wine of today, each holding approximately 5 liters. This bottle was found in Shulaveri, Georgia, in Eastern Europe. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting Batumi or Tbilisi, as this writer has, Georgia is a wine lover’s nirvana! Even the walls of the Czarist Russian architecture are covered in grape vines, rather than ivy. Every cobble stone street in Batumi seems to have its own wine shop and vintage. It really is darling! Wine has been a part of human history since we began living in agricultural communities approximately 8-10,000 years ago. It became an art form during the Grecian times and was later perfected by the Romans and French. Turning water into wine was Jesus Christ's first miracle, something done to please His mother at a wedding (ahhh!). Wine is a daily part of many cultures and shunned by others for religious reasons. It is considered a civilized drink, something to be shared with family and friends. National Wine Day is an unofficial event without an official sponsor. However, many wineries and restaurants throughout the country have specials on this day.

Ekadashi are fast days and sacred observances in Hindu religion commemorating Lord Vishnu. Apara Ekadasi is the Ekadeshi of Jyeshtha Krishna Paksha. Blueberry Cheesecake Day: May 26

Cheesecake is one of the oldest desserts in human history and has been eaten since ancient times in Greece. The desert originated on the Greek Island of Samos a little over 4,000 years ago. The dessert was so prized, athletes ate before performances during the original Olympics in 776 BC! It was also served as a wedding cake throughout the Greek and Roman empires. The first cheesecake recipe in print comes from the Greeks as well, in 230 AD and included wheat flour and kernels, honey and pressed cheese. The first known recipe, however, was by Roman politician Marcus Cato sometime in the century leading up to the birth of Christ. Of course, once the Roman’s got a hold of the original recipe, they augmented it, adding eggs and additional cheeses. As the recipe traveled to Europe over the coming centuries, each country put its own spin on this basic dessert. That it is cut into slivers for serving and topped with fruit, this was the contribution of the chefs of Henry Tudor, King Henry the VIII of England in during the 16th Century. In 1545 cheesecake saw its first appearance in a cookbook. But, cooks were not done with the dessert. Enter the United States in the 19th Century and the invention of cream cheese in 1875. Cream cheese became the base ingredient for what we now call New York Style Cheesecake, which includes more egg yolks and cream cheese. The same man who invented the Reuben sandwich is credited with the creation of the New York style cheese cake, Arnold Reuben. There are several different versions of cheesecake. Blueberry cheesecake came about through experimentation. Who chose to put blueberry jam on top of cheesecake first is unknown. However, blueberry and strawberry cheesecake continue to be two of the most popular versions on the planet. Best way to celebrate Blueberry Cheesecake Day? Have a slice for yourself and enjoy!

Eat More Fruits & Veggies Day: May 26

Two-thirds of adults and 3/4 of children do not get enough fruits and vegetables in their diets. To change that, Dole has set aside Eat More Fruits & Veggies Day each year to raise awareness and educate the public on the importance of a healthy diet.
