Proceeds raised through the event provide support and resources to people living incredibly tough lives both in the United States and in many of the world’s poorest communities. It strives to end world hunger. This event first ran in 2015.

Turtle Day, World: May 23

World Turtle Day is promoted by American Tortoise Rescue (ATR), a nonprofit organization established in 1990 for the protection of all species of tortoise and turtle. ATR launched World Turtle Day to increase respect and knowledge for the world’s oldest creatures. These gentle animals have been around for 200 million years, yet they are rapidly disappearing as a result of smuggling, the exotic food industry, habitat destruction, global warming and the cruel pet trade. It is a very sad time for turtles and tortoises of the world. ATR’s ultimate goal is to stop the illegal trade in turtles and tortoises around the world. The first priority here in the United States is to ask pet stores and reptile shows to stop the sale of hatchling tortoises and turtles without proper information for the buyer. For example, many people buy sulcata tortoises as an impulse buy because they are so adorable when they are tiny. The breeders and pet stores frequently do not tell the buyers that this tortoise can grow to 100 pounds or more and needs constant heat throughout the year since they do not hibernate. This event first ran in 2000.

Victoria Day (CA)(1837): May 23

The Sovereign's birthday has been celebrated in Canada since the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). May 24, Queen Victoria's birthday, was declared a holiday by the Legislature of the Province of Canada in 1845. After Confederation, the Queen's birthday was celebrated every year on May 24 unless that date was a Sunday, in which case a proclamation was issued providing for the celebration on May 25. After the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, an Act was passed by the Parliament of Canada establishing a legal holiday on May 24 in each year (or May 25 if May 24 fell on a Sunday) under the name Victoria Day. Today, it is marked on the Monday of her birthday to create a 3-day weekend.

Aviation Maintenance Technicians Day (1868), Ntl.: May 24

National Aviation Maintenance Technician Day marks the anniversary of the birth of Charles Edward Taylor on May 24, 1868. Taylor is regarded as the father of aviation maintenance. He played an essential role in defining the vocation of aviation maintenance technicians in ensuring the safety and security of civil and military aircraft. In 1901, Charles Edward Taylor began working as a machinist for Orville and Wilbur Wright at the Wright Cycle Company in Dayton, Ohio. Using only a metal lathe, drill press, and hand tools, Taylor built, in 6 weeks, the 12-horsepower engine that was used to power the first flying machine of the Wright brothers, December 17, 1903. His entire career spanned 60 years. The Charles Edward Taylor Master Mechanic Award bears his name and recognizes individuals with 50+ years of aviation maintenance experience. It is one of the highest honors available to the men and women in the field.

One in five persons with epilepsy in the United Kingdom are uncomfortable to speak with their friends and family about their condition. This week encourages people to understand the disorder and support the fight against the misconceptions, discrimination and isolation facing those who live with epilepsy. Additionally, support techniques and tools are provided for the caregivers of persons with epilepsy..

Escargot Day, Ntl.: May 24

Escargot is French for “snail”. Snails have been part of diets for millenniums. In 54BC the army of Julius Caesar dined on snails throughout its conquest of what today we know as France, Luxembourg, Belgium, most of Switzerland, Northern Italy and parts of the Netherlands and Germany. Snails became popular as a dessert in the Renaissance period. They were considered fish and therefore didn’t violate the Christian mandate to eat fish on Fridays or Lent restrictions. By the 1890s, Escargots à la Bourgignonne (snails with butter-parsley-garlic sauce) had gone from dessert to appetizer and were considered a posh addition to any meal. Today we celebrate this dish in a much loved foodie holiday.

The European Day of Parks is a commemorative day for Protected Areas across Europe that was launched in 1999 by the EUROPARC Federation to celebrate Protected Areas throughout Europe. It celebrates the creation of the 1st National Parks in Europe – a set of nine parks created in Sweden in 1909.

Prescription Drug Disposal Awareness Day, (1991): May 24

Prescription Drug Disposal Awareness Day is a day seeks to promote one message: When you're done using your prescription drug, please get rid of it.“ Steve Pasierb, the president of Partnership for a Drug-Free America states: "Our research shows that the No. 1 source of medicines that kids abuse is their own home medicine cabinet or a family member or friend's home." With thousands of cases of death due to unintentional overdose with prescription drugs each year, disposing of unneeded prescription drugs will eliminate temptation and drastically reduce the number of casualties created by this easily assuaged issue. Annually on the birthday of Timothy Strain, May 24, 1991. Strain died August 6, 2009 of an accidental drug overdose of methadone at the age of 18 when his girlfriend's mother accidentally gave him the drug thinking it was the pain killer Percocet. His death could have been avoided had the drug been disposed of properly when no longer in use.

Schizophrenia Day, World: May 24

World Schizophrenia Awareness Day does not have a specific sponsor, though it is supported by mental health professionals the world over each year. The actual origins of this event are unknown, though it is likely May 24 is the anniversary of something to do with the mental illness, (we haven't found that correlation as of this writing). The date does not relate to the birth or death of Eugen Bleuler, the Swiss psychiatrist who first coined the term in 1908. Schizophrenia is a mental illness currently effecting over 24 million people worldwide.

Senior PGA Championship, Kitchenaid (US-MI): May 24-29

The Kitchenaid Senior PGA Championship is organized by the Professional Golf Association for professional players age fifty and above. Held since 1939, the tournament consists of four rounds of 18-hole play beginning with 156 players, falling to 72 after the first two rounds. The winner is the player with lowest total score after 72 holes.
