On the first full week of May is North America Occupational Safety & Health Week. Organized by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE), the Interdisciplinary Association of Occupational Health and Hygiene of Mexico, Civil Association (AISOHMEX), and other organizations, this week is intended to raise awareness about the occupational risks that many professions face, and preventative measures workers can take to best protect themselves.

Older Americans Month: May

Older Americans Month was proclaimed by the President of the United States and established to honor the contributions of persons over the age of 65 to the nation. Older Americans are now living longer, healthier, and richer lives than ever before. As the eldest of the baby boomers turn 65, our Nation can look forward to the contributions of a new generation of American seniors. Each year, we set aside the month of May to honor older Americans, celebrate their role in steering the course of our history, and recognize their valuable insights and wisdom. Today, millions of our Nation's seniors are making a significant difference in society, strengthening our communities through their service. Older Americans support the arts and serve meals at soup kitchens. They mentor our children and stock the shelves at food pantries and libraries. Programs supported by the Corporation for National and Community Service and the Administration on Aging are working to connect men and women to community service, benefiting Americans of all ages. Having lived through many of our Nation's most challenging times, older Americans have shaped the story of America and secured the promise of our future. Osteoporosis Prevention Month, Ntl. (US): May

The National Osteoporosis Foundation sponsors National Osteoporosis Month each May. This is a national awareness building and fundraising initiative calling on women and men to start conversations about bone health and family history as the first step toward protecting themselves and future generations from osteoporosis. In honor of National Osteoporosis Month, health professionals, osteoporosis educators, patients, caregivers and advocates alike are asked to join the conversation. National Osteoporosis Months also occur in Canada each November. International Osteoporosis Day occurs in mid-October.

Pet Cancer Awareness Month, Ntl.: May*

A successful example of cause marketing, National Pet Cancer Awareness Month is sponsored by Blue Buffalo the pet food, Petco, Morris Animal Foundation and the Riedel Cody Fund. The month is dedicated to finding a cure for cancer in pets. This promotion is both a fund raiser and an awareness campaign. Cancer will affect one out of every four dogs and of those, over half will die from the disease. In fact, cancer is the number one disease-related cause of death in both dogs and cats, according to Morris Animal Foundation, a world leader in advancing veterinary research. During the month of May the promotion goes like this: For each bag of Blue Buffalo dog or cat food purchased at Petco stores across the country, one dollar will be donated to organizations such as the Morris Animal Foundation and others that provide funds to universities and clinics conducting research on the causes, prevention and treatment of canine and feline cancer. This is one of two Pet Cancer Awareness Months, each with different sponsors.

National Physical Fitness and Sports Month is declared each May by the President of the United States. It is a month to raise awareness about the benefits of physical activity. Families are encouraged to make small changes, like taking a walk after dinner or going for a bike ride. Teachers and administrators work to make physical activity a part of every student’s day and business leaders are encouraged to engage with the community, youth leaders and their peers about the importance of being active. Activities include: Presidential Youth Fitness Program; A comprehensive school-based program that promotes health and regular physical activity for America’s youth. This is a voluntary program that offers educators free access to a health-related assessment for youth fitness, professional development for meaningful implementation, and motivational recognition to empower students to adopt and maintain an active lifestyle. Adult Fitness Test, that measures an adult's aerobic fitness, muscular strength, flexibility, and other aspects of health-related fitness. Use this test to see how fit you are by completing the testing activities, entering your data online, and receiving an evaluation. It's the jump start to a healthier you! PALA Program Motivational program for individuals and families who want to make physical activity and healthy eating part of their everyday lives. This challenge is for anyone, from kids to grandparents, who wants to live a more active and healthier lifestyle. Presidential Champions - a program for people who want to be more active more often. Earn your champion award by logging activities and earning points as you do it. It's a great next step if you've completed your PALA+ challenge or for people who already get regular exercise.

Physiotherapy Month, Ntl. (CA): May

Sponsored by Canadian Physiotherapy Association, National Physiotherapy Month seeks to educate the public about and celebrate the profession of physiotherapy. Currently there are over 20,000 registered physiotherapists in Canada. Physiotherapists provide to promote good health, prevent injury, and improve the physical function and well-being of Canadians through the treatment of a wide range of conditions. Throughout the month, patients and the public will have the opportunity to learn more about what physiotherapists do and how they help their patients live fuller, healthier and more independent lives. Podenco Day, Intl. (ES/UK): May 1

International Podenco Day brings awareness to the suffering and plight of this much maligned Spanish hunting breed. They are referred to as the “great forgotten”. A fundraising and awareness event, marches are held in various locations in Spain and the UK. Podencos often hunt with Galgos and are typically discarded once their owners have gotten their use from them. Like Galgos, they are consider hunting tools and do not share the legal protection as that of home pets. They are identified by their bubblegum pink noses and oversized perked up ears. Podencos are primarily used to hunt hares and boar in packs. Known for their endurance and deft agility, it's these very qualities that when hunting in packs of up to 24 dogs, often result in injury or death.

Posture Month: May

May is Posture Month, a chance to pay attention to how you stand, walk, lift and sit. Proper posture places the least amount of strain on supporting muscles and ligaments during movement and weight-bearing activities. It makes you look confident, healthy and vital. Correct posture: a) Keeps bones and joints in correct alignment. This decreases wearing of joint surfaces that could result in degenerative arthritis and joint pain. b) Reduces stress on the ligaments holding the spinal joints together, minimizing the likelihood of injury. Allows muscles to work more efficiently, allowing the body to use less energy and, therefore, preventing muscle fatigue. c) Helps prevent muscle strain, overuse disorders, and even back and muscular pain. Poor posture can lead to excessive strain on our postural muscles and may even cause them to relax, when held in certain positions for long periods of time. For example, you can typically see this in people who bend forward at the waist for a prolonged time in the workplace. Their postural muscles are more prone to injury and back pain. Several factors contribute to poor posture-most commonly, stress, obesity, pregnancy, weak postural muscles, abnormally tight muscles and high-heel shoes. In addition, decreased flexibility, a poor work environment, incorrect working posture, and unhealthy sitting and standing habits can also contribute to poor body positioning.
