Sponsored by the American Academy of Dermatology, Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month occurs each May. Skin cancer affects people of all ages. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime; 13 million Americans are living with a history of non-melanoma skin cancer, and nearly 800,000 Americans are living with a history of melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer. Skin cancer is chiefly lifestyle disease and highly preventable. The most common cause is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. How to participate? Encourage families to adopt good habits together, like wearing sunscreen and limiting their time in the sun. Motivate teachers and administrators to teach kids about the harm of UV radiation and why it’s important to protect yourself. Identify youth leaders in your community who can talk to their peers about taking steps to prevent skin cancer. Partner with a local hospital, state fair, or similar organization to host a skin cancer screening event. Add information about skin cancer prevention to your newsletter. This includes members of the National Guard and Reserves, retirees and veterans, more than 90 million Americans over the past 230 years. Mother Goose Day, founded in 1987 by Gloria T. Delamar the author of Mother Goose; From Nursery to Literature. The event was created as a promotional tool for her book. Since, it has been picked up by libraries, schools, cities and even nursing homes as an opportunity explore the history of nursery rhymes and children’s literature. Suggested activities include: Have small groups act out skits or Charades of different rhymes Search out the Mother Goose rhymes and music portraying these. Seek out Mother Goose Rhymes which have finger play actions and use as a fun teaching tool. Have participants cook together to make a simple recipe associated with a Mother Goose rhyme. With the right age group, introduce the "rhythm and patter" of a nursery rhyme for writers to imitate in creating their own verses. Have a simple line-by-line recitation of rhymes. Read aloud from any illustrated edition of Mother Goose rhymes.
