International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 1999 (30C/62) with a purpose in promoting the preservation and protection of the world's languages and promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. The date represents the day in February 21, 1952 when students demonstrating for recognition of their language, Bangla, as one of the two national languages of what was then Pakistan, were shot and killed by police in Dhaka, the capital of what is now Bangladesh. This event first ran in 2000.

February 22, 1732 is the day that General George Washington, the leader of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, and the first President of the United States, was born. He led an illustrious career. The words of his farewell address continue to have relevance in America today, particularly his warnings about showing favored nation status to allies, and the dangers of imperialism: "The West derives from the East supplies requisite to its growth and comfort, and what is perhaps of still greater consequence, it must of necessity owe the secure enjoyment of indispensable outlets for its own productions to the weight, influence, and the future maritime strength of the Atlantic side of the Union, directed by an indissoluble community of interest as one nation. Any other tenure by which the West can hold this essential advantage, whether derived from its own separate strength or from an apostate and unnatural connection with any foreign power, must be intrinsically precarious. While, then, every part of our country thus feels an immediate and particular interest in union, all the parts combined can not fail to find in the united mass of means and efforts greater strength, greater resource, proportionally greater security from external danger, a less frequent interruption of their peace by foreign nations, and what is of inestimable value, they must derive from union an exemption from those broils and wars between themselves which so frequently afflict neighboring countries not tied together by the same governments, which their own rivalships alone would be sufficient to produce, but which opposite foreign alliances, attachments, and intrigues would stimulate and embitter. National Wildlife Day, founded in 2005, honors conservationist, 'The Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin (February 22, 1962). Irwin Died September 4, 2006. This event was created by Colleen Paige to focus on endangered species and support the zoos, sanctuaries and organizations working to save them. Until 2018, it ran on September 4. In 2018, it moved to February 22. Supporters are encouraged to contact their local zoo or animal sanctuary, sponsor a favorite animal, donate or volunteer on this day.

During the Russian civil war, on February 17, 1918 the first major draft of soldiers into the new Red Army occurred in Petrograd and Moscow. On the 23rd of February, the Red Army was officially established. This day marks that anniversary. It has had several different names over the years and has been celebrated on different days. The current Defender of the Fatherland holiday was added to the official Russian holiday calendar by President Vladimir Putin in 2002.

On February 23, 1893 Rudolph Diesel received a patent for the diesel engine. Born in Paris to Bavarian parents, he created the first engine to use fuel oil rather than water or gasoline. It took him two years to further improve this machine, which ultimately surpassed the steam engine efficiency.

Single-tasking Day: February 23

Forget multitasking. Go for single-tasking. National Single-tasking Day will be much easier for right handed men. Why? Women and left handed men have larger corpus callosum than right handed men. This means women and left handed men can both think and feel at the same time, something essential for multi-tasking and analyzing multiple sources of information including emotional IQ. It's also evolutionary. Women multitask because if the children were to survive in caveman days up to the present, she needed to be able to watch them and do other things. Got a problem that needs someone to juggle a bunch of different things? Put a woman or a left handed man on it. They can watch tv, read a book, watch the children and cook all at the same time. However, if you need absolute focus, no deviations and no distractions, a right handed man is your best choice. He is purpose driven and will not stop until he completes whatever he is doing. He is a single-tasker. This is why many men can't deal with someone talking over the game on TV. They'll talk, or they'll watch the game...but don't make them do both. You'll drive them crazy. Evolutionarily, this worked. He needed to protect and bring home food. This is also why men can go for 30-45 days after a break-up and not appear phased. They usually get thumped by emotions between 6-8 weeks. Until then, they can think it away by focusing on something else. If you've broken up with a right handed man, give him 60 days to reconnect. If he loves you, he will reconnect by then. If he doesn't, he'll move on to another task. If you'd like to learn more about this, read Dr. Pat Allen's book 'Getting to I Do'. There are times when we all have to multi-task or single-task. It's just easier for the above explained to do what they need to do. Doesn't mean your smarter. You just operate differently. God made us that way for a reason.
