World Tailor Day is rumored to mark the birthday of Elias Howe, Jr., the man who invented the first sewing machine. At least that is what our competitors say. There's a problem with that. Mr. Howe was born on July 9, 1819 and he died on October 3, 1867. His machine was patented September 10, 1846. Sadly, there is no way to tie February 28 to Mr. Howe. It's still a great day to honor these meticulous craftsmen and women around the world, be it London, Hong Kong, Milan or Bahrain. The word 'tailor' appears for the first time in the 1297 Oxford dictionary. It is a derivative of the French word for cut, 'tailler'. Tailors were first used by royalty during the eleventh century. The profession gained significant popularity during the Renaissance. The wealthy would go to professionals who styled clothes for them, based upon their own shape. Prior to this, most clothing was draped. Today, the top tailors are referred to as bespoke tailors, and their suits bespoke suits. These custom artisans create one of a kind fashions for their elite clientele. When you find a good one, hang on tight. There is nothing finer than well fitting clothes.

Tooth Fairy Day, Intl.: February 28

The first known accounts of the idea of a Tooth Fairy originated in Arabia in the 1300s. To this day in Islamic countries, parents continue to toss lost teeth in the air, a practice dating well before the advent of Islam. However, the tradition of paying children for teeth (or rewarding children for such) is seen in the Viking culture as early as the 7th Century. During the deeply superstitious Middle Ages, several myths surrounded the loss of teeth. It was at this time that children began leaving them under their pillow for a prize, and parents left a trail of fairy dust for the children to find in the morning. The Tooth Fairy is truly an international myth that borrows from traditions across the world. No single culture is responsible for the myth. It grew with the trade routes throughout the world.

First proposed by His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan in 2010, World Interfaith Harmony Week was unanimously adopted by the United Nations in October of that year with the first observance in February 2011. Following in the footsteps of The Common Word initiative, this week brings together Muslim and Christian leaders to engage in a dialogue based on two common fundamental religious Commandments; Love of God, and Love of the Neighbor, two commandments at the heart of the three Monotheistic religions (Christianity, Islam and Judaism) and therefore provide the most solid theological ground possible. The event has grown to include members of other faiths including Jewish, Buddhist, Sikh and Hindu, as well as those without faith.

International Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Week is a grassroots effort by the Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy in: 1) Identifying - supporting, and sharing promising DMD-related research; 2) Creating - up to date information about treatment and care options available to all members of the DMD community; 3) Pursuing - strategies which will impact this generation of young men affected by DMD as well as future generations; 4) Encouraging - policymakers to afford the same priority to DMD as they would to other disorders of similar incidence and prevalence; 5) Creating - a supportive community for people affected by DMD; 6) Participating - actively in the international DMD community; 7) Ensuring - PPMD is managed, developed and funded in a manner consistent with nonprofit industry best practices. It always occurs on the same dates each year: February 13-18.
