Self-help groups support self-awareness, self-esteem, sobriety maintenance, and offer valuable community support to persons dealing with major life challenges, be it divorce, disease or just getting back on their feet. January is the perfect month of the year for people to start a new chapter of their lives and self-help groups can make that happen.

Thyroid Awareness Month: January

Thyroid Awareness Month seeks to educate the public about thyroid disease and help raise money for research. More than 12 percent of the U.S. population will develop a thyroid condition during their lifetime. An estimated 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease. Up to 60 percent of those with thyroid disease are unaware of their condition. Women are five to eight times more likely than men to have thyroid problems. One woman in eight will develop a thyroid disorder during her lifetime. Most thyroid cancers respond to treatment, although a small percentage can be very aggressive. The causes of thyroid problems are largely unknown. Undiagnosed thyroid disease may put patients at risk for certain serious conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis and infertility. Pregnant women with undiagnosed or inadequately treated hypothyroidism have an increased risk of miscarriage, preterm delivery, and severe developmental problems in their children. Most thyroid diseases are life-long conditions that can be managed with medical attention.

Unchain a Dog Month: January

With temperatures dropping, animals are vulnerable to frostbite and worse. PETA created National Unchain a Dog Month to alert pet owners to the dangers of leaving their pet chained outside during the winter months. Animals need shelter, just like people. If you cannot bring your pets inside, make sure they have adequate shelter and access to food and water that isn't frozen. Also, watch for stray dogs hiding under cars and cats under car hoods. Often cats will crawl into the engine of parked cars to keep warm during winter months.

Veganuary is a charity inspiring people to try vegan for January and throughout the rest of the year in the United Kingdom. Recipes and activities are available on the event's website. This event first ran in 2014. What does it mean to go vegan? Vegan is not vegetarian, which simply means you do not eat meat. Vegans refrain from eating, using or enjoying any of the following: 1) No Meat, dairy, fish, or eggs. 2) No clothing made from animals including leather, fur, wool, or silk. 3) No products tested on animals. 4) No attending or watching entertainment that uses animals including film, TV, circuses, zoos, rodeos, hunting, and wild animal parks.

Winter Sports TBI Awareness Month, Ntl: January

Thunder and lighting, snow, ice, hypothermia and extreme cold are just some of the weather related hazards occurring during the winter. National Winter Weather Safety Day is the annual day the National Weather Service seeks to educate the public about the hazards ahead and how to prepare for them. This is one of four seasonal Safety campaigns sponsored by the National Weather Service each year.

Dog Days of Summer (Southern Hemisphere): January 3-February 11

The Dog Days of Summer in the Southern Hemisphere are the hottest days of the year. They received their name because in ancient times they were based upon the movements of the star Sirius, which was also known as the 'Dog Star'. In pagan societies, a brown dog would be sacrificed to the god represented by Sirius, an attempt to mitigate extreme heat over the coming weeks. These are the direct inverse of the dog days in the Northern Hemisphere.
