National Jelly Bean Day celebrates the Civil War era candy. Jelly beans are a product of the American Civil War, introduced in 1861 by Boston candy maker William Schrafft. As part of his marketing campaign he encouraged patrons to send jelly beans to troops in the Union Army. The first mention of jelly beans in the press was July 5, 1905 in an advertisement. During the 1930s jelly beans became a staple of Easter celebrations along with chocolate bunnies and eggs. By the 1980s, jelly beans had achieved high office with President Ronald Reagan insisting upon a bowl of jelly beans in his office.

Jenkins' Ear Day (UK)(1731): April 9

Wars are started over all kinds of reasons, silly and not. In this case, British mariner Robert Jenkins' ear, was the reason. Jenkins' ship, the Rebecca, was off the coast of Jamaica with the Spanish Coast Guard sacked the ship and cut off Jenkins' ear to send a message. Legend states that seven years later he exhibited his ear in the House of Commons, regaling them with how he and is ear became detached. Outraged, the political body declared war on Spain. The War of Jenkins' Ear would last nearly four years, with hostilities simmering a full nine.

John Parker Day (1775): April 19

John Parker was a militiaman during the American Revolution. On April 19, 1775 on Lexington Green, at Massachusetts Bay he stated: "Stand your ground. Don't fire unless you are fired upon; but, if they mean to have a war, let it begin here." It was the first military battle of the American Revolution, with battles held in Lexington and Concord. Parker would not see the end of the war. He died September 17,1775.

Kindergarten Day in the United States and Germany commemorates the birthday of the Friedrich Froebe (April 21, 1782 - June 21, 1852), the founder of the first kindergarten. Froebe first conceived the idea of a kindergarten in Blankenburg, Germany in 1837. A teacher, he believed in education is better when done through play and experience, easing the transition of learning from home to formal school. He founded the first kindergarten that year in Germany. Despite being popular internationally, the Prussian government banned kindergarten until 1851. The first kindergarten in the United States was put up in St. Louis in 1873.
