Poetry and the Creative Mind Awards: April 28

The Poetry and the Creative Mind Awards are held annually in the U.S. each April. Organized by the Academy of American Poets, this gala celebrates the important role of poetry in our culture, as well as the impact it has on readers and artists everywhere. The event is held at the Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall and features an array of actors, dancers, artists, musicians and other public figures on stage, sharing their favorite pieces of poetry. The actual date is set approximately 1 month out from the event. PLEASE NOTE: All televised and venue specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) should be treated as estimated, even if the dates are set. Several factors can cause an event to change dates at the last minute including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor prior to committing resources. In many cases we must estimate the dates based upon previous years' schedules, as the final dates are not set until a few months or weeks prior to the event. If the date is known to be estimated, you will see an (est) following the date in the title.

Pony Express Day (1860): April 3

Pony Express Day marks the anniversary of the creation of the Pony Express on April 3, 1860. The first Pony Express was instituted to speed the delivery of mail in the American West. It consisted of two horse and rider relay teams. The teams simultaneously left St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California. Only ten days later, on April 13, the westbound rider completed his task and delivered the mail packet after approximately 1,800-mile long journey to Sacramento. He beat the eastbound packet's arrival in St. Joseph by two days and set a new standard for mail delivery. Eventually the railroad would replace the pony express riders, but their contribution to history in the Old West remains entrenched in Americana and the romance of that era.

The modern day pretzel is believed to have originated in Pennsylvania in the year 1850 by Julius Sturgis. This event was first acknowledged in 1983 and made official in the state of Pennsylvania in 2003.
