National Pecan Day marks the anniversary of the planting of the first pecan trees by George Washington on his estate Mount Vernon on March 25, 1775. The trees were gifted to him by Thomas Jefferson. The pecan is native to North America and was a favorite food of the Native Americans. Prized for its sweet yet nutty flavor, pecans are used in a variety of recipes.

Shabbat Parah (J): March 25/26

Shabbat Parah occurs on the Saturday after Purim. It marks the start of the preparations for Passover and is one of the most important Shabbats of the Jewish faith. It is an initiation and purification ritual involving a red heifer (Parah Adumah in Hebrew) in antiquity. Today, specific passages from the Torah are read, coupled with prayer and reflection. In order to participate in Passover, the Torah instructs one must be purified of contamination prior to making the pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the celebration. Through the sprinkling of water over the heifer, one becomes pure. Rabbis often refer to this as the greatest of mysteries. Purity is attained by the impure in sprinkling water over the cow. However, impurity of the pure is re-introduced in touching its ashes. Only the pure may eat the cow during Passover. Shabbat begins at sundown on Friday and ends at sundown on Saturday.

Sheetala Ashtami, Basoda Puja (H): March 25

Sheetala Ashtami is celebrated following Holi. It is a common belief the Hindus who worship Sheetala, that by observing vrat and paying homage to the goddess they will be protected from deadly diseases. In Hindu mythology, Sheetla Mata is commonly called the goddess of small pox. Devotees prepare food on the day before Sheetla Asthami and they bring food to the temple to perform the puja (acts of devotion) for the goddess. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian Civil Calendar, which is the official holiday calendar in India, the largest Hindu nation. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon and stars. Slavery Victims of Transatlantic Trade, Day of Remembrance: March 25

For over 400 years, more than 15 million men, women and children were the victims of the tragic transatlantic slave trade, one of the darkest chapters in human history. The annual observance of the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade serves as an opportunity to honor and remember those who suffered and died at the hands of the brutal slavery system, and to raise awareness about the dangers of racism and prejudice today. 1793 slavery ended in Haiti; 1833 slavery ended in Canada, the British West Indies and the Cape of Good Hope; 1843 slavery ended in India; 1848 slavery ended in France; 1853 slavery ended in Argentina; 1863 slavery ended in Dutch Colonies and became illegal in the United States; 1865 slavery ended in the United States; 1888 slavery ended in Brazil. Selected countries in Asia, the Middle East and Africa continued with slavery until the mid-20th Century. Qatar abolished slavery in 1952; Bhutan abolished slavery in 1958; Niger abolished slavery in 1960; Saudi Arabia and North Yemen abolished slavery in 1962 followed by the Trucial States in 1964 and Oman in 1970; The final country to abolish slavery was Mauritania in 1981. However, it did not enforce its laws until 2007.

International Day of the Seal is recognized by zoos and aquariums throughout the world. Types of seals include Crabeater, Elephant, Fur, Leopard, Ross, Weddell and Sea Lions. In total, their are 18 known species of seals.\ International Day of the Seal is rumored to have been created by a Congressional Declaration in 1982. We've gone through all the Public Laws, 97th Congress for 1981 and 1982; no such declaration exists: https://www.congress.gov/public-laws/97th-congress That doesn't mean it isn't an event worthy of recognizing. Seals are essential to the marine ecosystems around the world.

Water Day, World: March 22

World Water Day is lead by UN Water and the day focuses on water conservation and use, blending the natural and social sciences, education, culture and communication. Contrary to popular belief, the most valuable natural resource in the Middle East is water, not oil. People can live without oil. Nothing lives without water. Control of rivers and aquifers underlies the conflicts in the region and has for centuries. Religion is the excuse used to mobilize and conscript. Water is a primary reason. The Middle East is simply a microcosm of the global issues surrounding water. Water is essential to poverty reduction and equity. It creates economic benefits, helps preserve all natural resources and safe, secure access to water builds peace. World Water Day is devoted to caring for this precious natural resource and educating the world on its need and conservation.

Great American Takeout: March 23 (est)

This event has expanded, but as of March 2, 2022, it has not set a date for 2022. California Pizza Kitchen, El Torito, Habit Burger Grill and other national eateries with dine-in and take-out capabilities joined together to create the Great American Takeout in response to the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic. With most communities worldwide in shelter-in-place, under curfew or lockdown, restaurants have been particularly hit hard with layoffs and lack of business. Taking part is simple: Order take-out and post to social media with #TheGreatAmericanTakeout. Encourage friends and neighbors to do the same. Scheduled for Tuesday, we'll pick this up for 2021 on the last Tuesday of March as an estimated day.

Liberty Day, Ntl.(1775): March 23

Today is the anniversary of Patrick Henry's Liberty speech on March 23, 1775. In that speech he said: " I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death." Just hours earlier, the British began their march on Concord, which would see the opening shots of the Revolutionary War on April 19, 1775.

Melba Toast Day, Ntl. (AU): March 23

Americans are not the only ones to celebrate food holidays. Australia has National Melba Toast Day. Unlike most other food holidays however, this one has a special story to it. Melba toast is named after Dame Nellie Melba, which is the stage name of the Australian opera singer Helen Porter Mitchell (May 19, 1861-February 23, 1931). Melba toast was created for her by her chef and fan Auguste Escoffier when she was very ill, as a part of her diet. Interestingly, he also named the Peach Melba after her.

Meteorological Day, World (1950): March 23

World Meteorological Day honors the invaluable contribution of meteorological specialists around the globe. Meteorologists report and study the weather. Due to their efforts, millions of people each year are saved from devastating storms and flooding through accurate forecasting. This event is promoted annually by the World Meteorological Organization and marks the March 23, 1950 ratification of the conventions establishing the World Meteorological Organization.
