Created in 2004 as End Israeli Apartheid and Segregation Week, this awareness and advocacy campaign has become a worldwide phenomena with events throughout the globe in most major cities. The event became simply Israeli Apartheid Week in 2017 and now occurs over a two month period of time, with each nation organizing according to its own schedule within this period. The goal is to end the practice of apartheid worldwide. Currently the state of Israel is its most notable practitioner. During the period set aside for Israel Apartheid Week, organizers throughout the world on a local level use non-violent methods to protest the practice of apartheid and promote democracy. The ultimate goal being that all people living within the State of Israel and its Occupied Territories, regardless of race, origin or faith, have equal rights as human beings, opportunity, equal access to resources and respect in practice and under as agreed by representatives of the state in 1947 at the United Nations and as enshrined in international law and treaties, to which Israel is a signatory. What is Apartheid? Apartheid is the practice of using politics, military and law to create a system where one group of people is preferred over another based upon ethnicity, faith, politics or some other arbitrary segregator. The preferred people are endowed with special privilege, above-equal and preferential access to resources and services. They often have segregated housing, schools, roads, courts and employment opportunities. Segregation is based solely upon the identifying segregator. There is a two tiered legal system and the government and military work together to enforce this segregation. How Israel Practices Apartheid In Israel, the primary selector is faith, the secondary selector is race. Those identified as Jewish are preferred and live in a republic based upon democratic principles. Those identified not as Jewish (Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, etc...) live in a fascist state, with nominal or no rights depending upon where they live in the region (occupied or within the green line). Israel has over 70 laws on its books guaranteeing this unequal treatment by faith, with the latest being the Nation State Law of 2018. Israel has no constitution. Jewish persons can argue their rights in civil courts. Non-Jewish persons are tried in military courts and can be held indefinitely without charges, (renewed every 6-months). Jewish people can only be held with charge and under the law. This is a textbook example of a two-tiered legal system. Israel is a nuclear super power, with one of the ten most powerful militaries in the world. It uses this military power to enforce apartheid on those it occupies and to disenfranchise those within the state who are not Jewish. The people it oppresses have no army, navy or air force. They can be attacked, and are attacked, with impunity by the military and by the settler movement, often killed or permanently maimed, as the Great March of Return has shown with 170 Palestinians killed by Israeli snipers and 18,000 injured, as of this writing. Israeli apartheid is more brutal than that experienced in South Africa. The use of the military to bomb, raze homes, limit access to natural resources, lay siege and blockades, elevates Israeli apartheid to a new level. The construction of the wall, ten times the size of the Berlin Wall, Jewish only roads, Jewish only housing, (enforced and protected by the military), hundreds of checkpoints and the collective punishment of millions of people, simply because they are not Jewish, further illustrates the aggressive nature of Israeli style apartheid. What you can do: Through non-violent means like Israeli Apartheid Week, awareness, education and advocacy help expose this practice. A nation state cannot be democratic and practice apartheid, period. Like with South Africa, Israel's apartheid policies will only end when the international community says 'enough!'. Jazz, Black Women in Jazz Month, Intl.: March

Jazz is an American musical invention that gained favor in the early 20th Century. From it many greats have been spawned. This month honors the African American women who were trailblazers in the genre. These include Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington. Celebrate this month by taking some vinyl for a spin. It's the best way to hear jazz in its original form.

Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month (CA): March

Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month occurs in March for Canada and July in the United States. In Canada, approximately 61,500 children live with arthritis. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is the most common rheumatic disease in childhood. It is characterized by persistent inflammation in the joints that causes pain, stiffness and swelling. Physical activity is important for children with arthritis. These children can develop weak muscles and low bone strength because of their condition and because they tend to be less physically active than children who don't have arthritis. The Linking Exercise, Activity, and Pathophysiology in Childhood Arthritis the Canadian Collaborative Team (LEAP) is studying the link between physical activity and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. The work of the LEAP team will provide information and help develop safe and effective exercise programs to keep children with arthritis healthy and improve their quality of life. Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month is about supporting research and helping kids with arthritis be kids!

Kidney Health Month, Ntl. (CA/US): March

National Kidney Health Month occurs in March in the United States and Canada. In addition to a month long awareness campaign, World Kidney Day occurs in the middle of March and the United Kingdom devotes a full week to Kidney health in May. The purpose of this month is to educate the public about Kidney Disease, what causes it and what you can due to minimize your chances of getting it. WHAT IS KIDNEY DISEASE? Chronic kidney disease is defined as having some type of kidney abnormality, or " " marker" " , such as protein in the urine and having decreased kidney function for three months or longer. There are many causes of chronic kidney disease. The kidneys may be affected by diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Some kidney conditions are inherited (run in families). Others are congenital; that is, individuals may be born with an abnormality that can affect their kidneys. The following are some of the most common types and causes of kidney damage. Diabetes is a disease in which your body does not make enough insulin or cannot use normal amounts of insulin properly. This results in a high blood sugar level, which can cause problems in many parts of your body. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease. High blood pressure (also known as hypertension) is another common cause of kidney disease and other complications such as heart attacks and strokes. High blood pressure occurs when the force of blood against your artery walls increases. When high blood pressure is controlled, the risk of complications such as chronic kidney disease is decreased. Glomerulonephritis is a disease that causes inflammation of the kidney's tiny filtering units called the glomeruli. Glomerulonephritis may happen suddenly, for example, after a strep throat, and the individual may get well again. However, the disease may develop slowly over several years and it may cause progressive loss of kidney function. Polycystic kidney disease is the most common inherited kidney disease. It is characterized by the formation of kidney cysts that enlarge over time and may cause serious kidney damage and even kidney failure. Other inherited diseases that affect the kidneys include Alport's Syndrome, primary hyperoxaluria and cystinuria. Kidney stones are very common, and when they pass, they may cause severe pain in your back and side. There are many possible causes of kidney stones, including an inherited disorder that causes too much calcium to be absorbed from foods and urinary tract infections or obstructions. Sometimes, medications and diet can help to prevent recurrent stone formation. In cases where stones are too large to pass, treatments may be done to remove the stones or break them down into small pieces that can pass out of the body. Urinary tract infections occur when germs enter the urinary tract and cause symptoms such as pain and/or burning during urination and more frequent need to urinate. These infections most often affect the bladder, but they sometimes spread to the kidneys, and they may cause fever and pain in your back. Congenital diseases may also affect the kidneys. These usually involve some problem that occurs in the urinary tract when a baby is developing in its mother's womb. One of the most common occurs when a valve-like mechanism between the bladder and ureter (urine tube) fails to work properly and allows urine to back up (reflux) to the kidneys, causing infections and possible kidney damage. Drugs and toxins can also cause kidney problems. Using large numbers of over-the-counter pain relievers for a long time may be harmful to the kidneys. Certain other medications, toxins, pesticides and street drugs such as heroin and crack can also cause kidney damage.

Liver Disease Month, Help Fight (CA): March

The purpose of National Help Fight Liver Disease Month in Canada is to promote liver health and to reduce the incidence and impact of all liver disease. The most common contributors to Liver disease are: Viral hepatitis Caused by viruses that attack the liver, viral hepatitis comes in many forms. The most common forms world-wide are hepatitis A, B and C. Although hepatitis A and B can be prevented by vaccine, there is no vaccine for hepatitis C. In Canada, hepatitis C is the leading cause of liver transplants. Obesity The leading cause of liver disease in Canada is fatty liver disease linked to obesity. Alcohol Factors such as gender, age, nationality, weight and health can affect how a person's liver metabolizes alcohol. When the liver has too much alcohol to handle, normal liver function may be interrupted leading to a chemical imbalance. If the liver is required to detoxify alcohol continuously, liver cells may be destroyed or altered resulting in fat deposits (fatty liver) and more seriously, either inflammation (alcoholic hepatitis) and/or permanent scarring (cirrhosis). Liver cancer can also result from alcohol induced liver disease. Canadian health standards for alcohol consumption are: 10 drinks a week for women with no more than 2 drinks a day 15 drinks a week for men, with no more than 3 drinks a day. Use this month long event to evaluate your own habits and take steps to minimize your risk of contracting liver disease. The US version of this month occurs in October each year.

Maha Shiva Ratri (H): March 1

Maha Shivratri is a Hindu observance related to Lord Shiva. It is celebrated on the Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi of Magha month. It is the wedding day of Lord Shiva and Parvati. Devotees worship Lord Shiva and offer Him Bel leaves (bel patra), Dhatura, Bhang, milk and water with flower. All-day fasting is observed by devotees and throughout the day devotees chant "Om Namah Shivaya", the sacred mantra of Shiva. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian Civil Calendar, which is the official holiday calendar in India, the largest Hindu nation. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon and stars. Names of months and holidays, as well as the corresponding dates in the Gregorian Calendar, vary widely from one calendar to the next. Use our dates as a baseline. Find out which of the dozens of Hindu calendars is used in the region you live or plan to visit if you are looking to attend or witness a specific observance.

March for Babies: March

March for Babies is an annual fundraising drive by the March of Dimes supporting pediatric research and finding cures for various diseases and afflictions affecting babies before and after they're born. Each year 15 million babies are born premature. March of Dimes helps moms have full-term pregnancies and healthy babies. If something goes wrong, they offer information and comfort to families.

Mars (god) Month: March

Mars Month celebrates the month's namesake, the Roman god of war, Mars. In early Roman history he was a god of spring, growth in nature, fertility, and the protector of cattle. Mars is also mentioned as a chthonic god (earth-god) and this could explain why he became a god of death and finally a god of war. He is the son of Jupiter and Juno and the father of Romulus and Remus by the Vestal Ilia (Rhea Silvia). Because he was the father of these legendary founders of Rome, and thus of the Roman people, the Romans styled themselves 'sons of Mars'.

Middle Level Education Month, Ntl.: March

NASSP has joined with the Association for Middle Level Education, The National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform, Adolescent Success, and Let's Move! Active Schools declared March the official month to celebrate middle level education. Here are a few ideas to help you make the most of National Middle Level Education Month: Get the word out. Develop a few message points about your school that you want to share. Put them on business cards for the staff, on your fax cover sheet, in parent newsletters, on your website, Facebook page, etc. Develop a brochure. Call it " 50 Magnificent Things about Our Middle School” and distribute it at registration, open house, conferences, and other events. Give copies to your district office and local realtors to pass on to those considering moving into your attendance area. Connect with local realtors. Host a breakfast or lunch, and then give them a tour of your schools and share programs that make you proud. Realtors are often the ones asked questions about the schools in the area. Engage your superintendent. Keep your superintendent and board informed of effective middle level practices. Pass on articles or websites you think would interest them. Invite them to attend a middle level conference with you. Offer to share results of a successful program at a school board meeting – and bring along students to help with the report! Send board members copies of your school newsletter. Let students help. Invite a student to join you at a civic club meeting. Help civic organizations feature students at their meetings. Encourage student performance groups to reach out to community organizations for meeting programs. Build a relationship with your local media. Find out who is in charge of the education news and ask them how they want you to keep them informed of happenings at your school. Contact your state and federal representatives. Invite them to visit your school to speak with classes during the off session or to shadow you, a teacher or a student. Offer to be a resource on educational issues and keep them informed of pending legislation that will impact middle level education. Give your message a personal touch. Facts and figures can be impressive, but a story about how those facts impact the students in your school will make a more lasting impression. Write op-ed articles in newspapers, on blogs, in on-line publications or in letters or emails written to state and/or federal representatives.

Throughout the month, music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation. MIOSM began as a single statewide celebration in 1973, and has grown over the decades to encompass a day, then a week, and then in 1985 to become a month long celebration of school music. The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children.

Mustache March: March

Mustache March is a cultural movement and fundraiser for a variety of causes. Men grow mustaches for the month of March and collect charitable donations for the MACC Fund. The MACC Fund, Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer, is a charitable organization formed in 1976 to support research into the effective treatment and cure of childhood cancer. www.maccfund.org Mustaches have always been politically-charged. They've been banned by kings, forbidden by employers and used as a form of protest. The popularity of mustaches has ebbed and waned throughout the ages, and in America today we find ourselves at a low point of mustache-acceptance. What better way to start a cultural movement than to embrace an unpopular social practice in attempt to raise money for charity? The Follicle Freedom Foundation was born of this idea. The goal is threefold. Revive a once-glorious grooming practice, humiliate ourselves in the process, and raise some cash for a worthy cause. These are some of the events: Mustache March judging and chili cook-off event. Hanson Dodge Creative is organizing and hosting the fundraising event and campaign. Groom is providing awards for the winners of the mustache contest. Register at MustacheMarch.com Rules 1. All registered participants must be clean-shaven on March 1st, unless they are competing in the pre-existing condition class. 2. Facial hair of any variety is allowed until March 15th, after which point only a mustache is allowed. A mustache is defined as an island of hair that is at least 1cm (root to root) from the nearest body of facial hair. A mustache is an island. Get it? No isthmuses or peninsulas allowed. 3. Registered participants who shave off their mustache prior to judging, or those who refuse to obey to the " " island" " rule after March 15th are disqualified. Disqualification includes a $20 payment of personal monies to our selected charity, the MACC Fund. 4. Participants will be subjected to a minimum of 2 photographs (before and after) during the course of Mustache March for documentation/humiliation purposes. Additional photography will be solicited. It is highly recommended that you comply to this solicitation for humiliation purposes. 5. Participants will be given a pledge sheet when they register. This sheet and all donations must be turned in prior to judging on March 31st.

Noodle Month, Ntl.: March

National Noodle Month celebrates the wheat based (or rice at times) long squiggly food we call noodles. Noodles differ from pasta in that they're made from milled wheat flour; pasta is made from durum semolina, which is coarser. Noodles are mixed, flattened/rolled and cut. Pasta is made into a dough that is then passed through a mold or die. This is why pasta can come in a variety of shapes, sizes and textures. Noodles, however, are always long and either tubular or flat. Pasta is usually purchased dry (or fresh in gourmet shops) and either boiled or baked. Perfectly cooked pasta is soft on the outside but firm on the inside. The Italian term for this is 'Al Dente'. Pasta tends to hold onto sauces much better than noodles. Noodles are usually purchased fresh and can be baked, fried, stir-fried, boiled, steamed…pasta usually doesn't do too well being fried, let alone stir fried! Noodles are considered perfectly cooked if they are elastic or of uniform firmness or softness. Noodles can also be, and are often, eaten raw. National Noodle Month is an unofficial event. National Pasta Month in October is sponsored by the National Pasta Association.
