This Buddhist Festival in Japan occurs each year between March 1 and 14, culminating with the drawing of water at the Todaiji Temple. Each night, believers carry giant torches to the balcony of Nigatsudo and shower onlookers in embers. This shower is believed to ensure all those below experience a safe year. In addition to the torches, on the 12th and 13th, priests draw water from a well that flows only once a year and distribute these waters. The waters are believed to restore health to the sick and afflicted. The spectacle is accompanied by horns and bells and goes into the early hours of the morning. This is one of the most popular Buddhist festivals in Japan.

Pancake Day (also called Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday) is the last great gasp of gluttony prior to the beginning of the 40-day period of Lent in the Christian calendar. The custom during Lent is to give up something you enjoy and fast from that enjoyment to mark the 40 days leading up to Easter. In Australia, Canada, South Africa and the United Kingdom, this day before Ash Wednesday is often celebrated by eating pancakes with lots of syrup and butter. Thus the name Pancake Day.

Paws to Read Month: March

Studies show a child's confidence, comprehension, concentration and reading level greatly improve with regular reading to animals. Here are some highlights: 1) One acre of peanuts will make 30,000 peanut butter sandwiches. 2) It takes almost 850 peanuts to make an 18oz jar of peanut butter! 3) Two peanut farmers have been elected President of the United States: Thomas Jefferson and Jimmy Carter. 3) The average American child will eat 1,500 peanut butter sandwiches by the time he or she graduates from high school. Pets are highly susceptible to poison, many of which we don't consider harmful to them because they are benign to us. National Pig Day in the United States celebrates pigs, the animal kind, not the male kind. The first National Pig Day occurred in 1972 and was created by sisters Ellen Stanley, a teacher in Lubbock, Texas, and Mary Lynne Rave of Beaufort, North Carolina. Its sole purpose is to accord the pig its rightful, though generally unrecognized, place as one of man's most intellectual and domesticated animals. Today Pig Day does not have an official sponsor or organizer. It is simply celebrated through custom by zoos, schools and other industries throughout the US either as a day to give pigs a break, learn about pigs or enjoy bacon, chops and other delicious meats.
