The small nation of Lithuania first gained its independence in 1918. However, with the rise of the Soviet Union, it lost it in 1940. When the Soviet Union dissolved in 1990, on March 11 of that year, Lithuania gained its independence again. This is a national holiday.

Key Deer Awareness Day (1967): March 11

These miniature deer grow are only about 25-35 inches high at the shoulder (about the same size as a Labrador Retriever) were first added to the endangered species list on March 11, 1967. Native to Southern Florida and the Keys. There are fewer than 1,000 left in the wild. Today is about raising awareness about these splendid creatures and preserving their habitat for years to come.

Madrid Train Bombing (ES)(2004): March 11

This is the anniversary of the Madrid Train Bombings. There were three major terrorist attacks in the first five years of the twenty-first century that forever changed Western civilization, civil safety and privacy rights. These were the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington DC; the July 7, 2005 London bombings; and today's anniversary, the March 11, 2004 Madrid Commuter Train bombings. In Spain 10 bombs exploded on four commuter trains almost simultaneously, killing 191 people and injuring more than 1,800 during the morning rush hour. This was and continues to be the deadliest terrorist attack in Spain's history.

Middle Name Pride Day: March 11

Middle Name Pride Day is celebrated by telling three people who don't know your middle name what it is and the story behind it. Through the first 4,500 years of biblical human history, surnames rarely existed and people operated on a first name basis. Surnames didn't occur with frequency in western society until the 10th Century AD or become accepted until the eleventh. Exceptions occur, generally within royalty and ruling parties, but most people were identified with their tribes, culture, city, job, position or influence: King David, Erik the Red, Attila the Hun, Julius Caesar, Socrates, Aesop, John the Baptist, Jesus of Nazareth, Mary Magdalene. Then a person's name qualified its bearer like a business card rather than today's use of names, to identify like a serial number. The first known use of a middle name appears to have occurred in Europe around the 14th Century. The use of middle names didn't really take off until the 20th century and they are especially useful to people like myself with very common names (Laura Lewis…there are 10 Laura Lewis' living within 5 miles of me in Los Angeles which is why I always use my middle name on legal documents and in work: Laura Dawn Lewis). In the United States, upon marriage, individuals have the option of no longer using their middle name. This is why you will see a lot of people with two last names and no middle name. In other societies, generation after generation strings together surnames to trace the genealogy of their family. Often the wife's last name becomes the children's middle name.

Moshoeshoe's Day (LS)(1870): March 11

This has to be one of the most fun events to say: Moshoeshoe's Day. Simply saying Chief Moshoeshoe's name brings a smile to the face. Born in 1776, Chief Moshoeshoe became the first king of the African nation of Lesotho. He is credited with uniting the tribes of the Basotho people and was known for his generosity toward defeated enemies. Upon his death March 11, 1870, colonialism became the reality for the people. He is celebrated today for his diplomacy and being the nation's first king.

Pandemic Day might go down in history as one of its eeriest coincidences. March 11, 1918, the first cases of the Spanish Flu were reported in the United States. One-hundred and seven soldiers at Fort Riley, in Kansas, were diagnosed. The Spanish Flu would go on to claim the lives of 500,000 US citizens and 22 million people worldwide. Fast forward to March 11, 2020, when the novel Coronavirus, named COVID-19, is declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization. As of this writing (June 2021), the world is still in the midst of this pandemic. Over 614,000 Americans have died and globally, nearly 4,000,000. However, the global number is considered a vast underestimate, with experts estimating that number closer to 20 million. Nations including India, Brazil, Syria, Yemen, the Palestinian Territories and others, lack the medical infrastructure, testing and reporting mechanisms to accurately track infections and deaths, particularly in rural communities.
