Scleroderma Awareness Day, World (1940): June 29

World Scleroderma Awareness Day is set aside during World Scleroderma Awareness Month to bring awareness to this autoimmune condition through fundraising events and public outreach. Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease that causes the skin and internal organs to thicken and tighten, leading to organ failure and death. This medical condition has no cure. The date marks the anniversary of the death of Swiss painter Paul Klee on June 29, 1940. He died from the disease.

Waffle Iron Day, Electric: June 29

National Waffle Iron Day honors the electric waffle iron. Waffles have been around since the Middle Ages. Originally intended to be used in an open flame, the original design used two metals pans that were attached to a long pole and the cake is cooked in between these pans in an open flame. The first stove top waffle iron was patented on August 24, 1869 by Cornelius Swartwout. There is no specific patent or product launch attached to this day. However, General Electric did create the first electric waffle iron prototype in 1911. It went on sale in 1918.

Asteroid / Meteor Day, Intl. (1908): June 30

International Asteroid Day is observed each year on the anniversary of the Tunguska impact over Siberia, Russia, June 30, 1908. The day seeks to raise public awareness about asteroid impact hazards. Events include lectures, films, expert science presentations and educational workshops, organized by museums, research institutes, government agencies, universities, astronomers, filmmakers and concerned citizens. In February 2014, astrophysicist Dr. Brian May, (and famed guitarist for the rock band QUEEN, which is why we're including music as one of the categories), began working with Grigorij Richters, the director of a new film titled 51 Degrees North, a fictional story of an asteroid impact on London and the resulting human condition. May composed the music for the film and suggested that Richters preview it at Starmus, an event organized by Dr. Garik Israelian and attended by esteemed astrophysicists, scientists and artists, including Stephen Hawking, Richard Dawkins and Rick Wakeman. The result was the beginning of discussions that would lead to the launch of Asteroid Day in 2014. To insure that the nascent idea of a movement had global support, May then introduced Richters to the B612 Foundation, an American-based non-profit advocacy organization created to protect the world from dangerous asteroids through early detection. B612 co-founders Apollo 9 Astronaut Rusty Schweickart and three-time Astronaut Dr. Ed Lu, along with Danica Remy, Chief Operations Officer, brought to Asteroid Day a network of planetary defense specialists and global contacts. The four official co-founders of Asteroid Day are: Dr Brian May, Danica Remy, Grigorij Richters and Rusty Schweickart.

In case you've been asleep the past twenty years, (and you would have had to be) you probably haven't noticed that the entire month of June now wears a rainbow and it is wall-to-wall Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgender-Queer celebrations, history, memorials and awareness campaigns around the world. June 30th marks the end of the month and has become a worldwide celebration of all things LGBTQ with marches, rallies and parties in many major cities within the nations where same-sex and transgender lifestyles are not banned. In nations where it is still taboo, activists are working on it. Happy World Pride Day.

Baby Boomers Recognition Day in the US and it is sponsored by Dorothy Zjawin of New Jersey. This event used to occur on the first day of summer. Additionally, there was a previous event of the same name on August 17 each year. That event's website went dark in 2016. However, the month of August is Boomers Making a Difference Month, sponsored by another group. Until the 21st Century Baby Boomers, those born between 1946 and 1964 were the largest generation the world had ever seen. They earned their name due to the 'baby boom' that ensued as soldiers throughout the world returned home from WWII. Boomers are split into two groups: Premier baby boomers 1945-1954 and secondary boomers from 1955-1964.
