In the Nanakshahi calendar of the Sikhs, Maghar is the ninth month. In the Gregorian calendar, this falls between November and December. Thirty days long, Maghar often begins on November 14 of the Gregorian calendar. Sikhs go on a pilgrimage on the first day of Maghar. The Nanakshahi calendar is based on the birth of Sikhi Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism.

National Pickle Day is a celebration that focuses on the cucumber pickle. Pickling to preserve foods has been around since ancient times and is an excellent way to extend the life of fresh vegetables. The pickle, or gherkin as it is referred to across the pond, is the reigning favorite and can be either sweet or sour. This unofficial holiday currently does not have a sponsor.

Like many Eastern European and Baltic States, Estonia has endured a less than direct path to independence. On February 24, 1918 it achieved its independence from the Russian Empire, only to be annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940. Fifty-one years later, this little nation, which has been populated since around 8500BC, finally achieved independence again. Today is their national day celebrating the anniversary of its first freedom.

Tortilla Chip Day, Ntl.: February 24

National Tortilla Chip Day celebrates the tortilla chip. November 29, 1907 is the day the inventor of the Tortilla Chip, Rebecca Webb-Carranza was born in Durango Mexico. Later, when she was a child, her family immigrated to the United States. The tortilla chip came about after her marriage to her first husband in 1931. The family owned a Mexican delicatessen in Los Angeles that made tortillas. Sometime in the early 1940s, the Carranza family had a party at their home. Resourceful, Rebecca had an idea. Rather than throw out the scrapings from the tortillas in their factory, located in Los Angeles California during the 1930s-1960s, she cut them into wedges and served them at a party. They were a hit with her family and soon she began selling the chips for 10 cents a bowl out of the family shop. The snack caught on quickly with the Hollywood crowd and spread. The tortilla chip was born. Between 1994 and 1995 Carranza was among the recipients of the Golden Tortilla, an award created to honor Mexican food industry innovators by the Azteca Milling company. Though she created it and the family later expanded, in 1967 they were forced to close their chip factory in Long Beach California due to competition from larger corporations who saw the potential in the chip. She had to work into her 80s, bagging groceries and assisting with the census. She did not die a wealthy woman monetarily, but wealthy in love of 12 grand children, 19 great-grand children and two great-great-grandchildren to her name. We’re unable to figure out if February 24 is the anniversary of the party. It’s not the birthday or death of its inventor and there is no patent or copyright tied to this day. Rebecca Webb-Carranza died on January 19, 2006 at the age of 98.

Chocolate Covered Nuts Day: February 25

Chocolate Covered Nuts Day is an unofficial food holiday that celebrates nuts of various varieties covered in milk, dark or white chocolate. The best way to celebrate this day? Have a blind taste testing of the various varieties: macadamia, almond, walnut, pecan, cashew, hazelnuts, peanuts, pine nut and see if you can guess which nut is in the chocolate. Really want to mess with someone? Throw in some pumpkin or sunflower seeds covered in chocolate. After all, seeds are nuts too.

Clam Chowder Day, Ntl.: February 25*

This is one of two unofficial events celebrating clam chowder. The other is in January 21 and specific to the creamy white sauce New England Style, which is the most popular in the United States. There are several varieties of clam chowder, the most common being New England (white sauce), Manhattan (red sauce) and Rhode Island Clam Chowder (clear broth). Chowder is a cross between a stew and a soup, essentially made of vegetables and fish stewed in a cauldron. Calderia is Latin for a “place for warming things.” Jowter is old English for a “fish peddler”. It is believed that this is the origin of the word chowder. The first recipes for chowder seem originate in both France and England, among the coastal fishing villages. The custom was to have a cauldron of simmering in the house, awaiting the fishing ships return to port. A portion of each man’s catch would be tossed in and the resulting chowder was served to the community to celebrate the safe return of the ship. Clams were an easy choice, and could be gathered without the need to go out in a ship. This made them ideal for chowder, especially when the weather was bad. Of course clams could only be harvested at certain times of the year, so the chowder was often made from haddock, cod or other local fish. Chowder was a staple of the working classes. Later recipes for chowder included other meats like ham, bacon and poultry. Clam chowder became a favorite with East Coast Americans, especially on Fridays due to a Christian custom of only eating fish on Friday. "

Revolving Pistol Day (1836): February 25

National Revolving Pistol Day marks the anniversary of the invention of the Colt Revolver. On February 25, 1836 the Colt Revolving Pistol was patented. This changed guns and warfare forever, though it would go through several modifications before the Colt 45 emerged as the perfect hand gun. Prior to the colt revolver, guns had to shoot and reload. Shoot and reload. The Colt revolver changed this allowing a hand gun to fire 5-6 rounds in quick succession without needing to reload.

For Pete's Sake Day: February 26

"For Pete’s Sake” Day is possibly tied to a previous event, 'For the Love of Mike' Day. In the 1880s, rather than profaning God’s name in moments of incredulity or exasperation, people would say either “For Pete’s Sake!” or “For the Love of Mike!”. It was one way to avoid blemishing the 4th Commandment, “Thou shall not take thy Lord’s name in vain.” The origin is debated. Peter was an apostle chosen by Jesus. A common curse in Christian circles at the time was “for pity's sake." It is possible the saying “For Pete’s Sake” is a combination of the two. This is a Wellcat event.

Levi Strauss Day (1829): February 26

On February 26, 1829 Levi Strauss was born in Buttenheim Germany (then Bavaria). Around 1835 the family left Germany for the United States to avoid religious discrimination and eventually settled in San Francisco. It was here, as merchants catering to the miners of the California Gold Rush that helped to propel Strauss into success. The breakthrough came in 1872 when working with a tailor in Nevada named Davis that Strauss and Davis fashioned heavy canvas into pants and dyed the fabric with indigo ink to hide any stains that may accumulate. What made the pants so extraordinary was the addition of metal rivets to secure pockets and the fly, thus preventing ripping. The men patented this method for creating pants and the blue jean was born. Strauss died at the age of 73 on September 26, 1902.
