Women's Heart Health Day was founded by author, journalist and heart disease survivor Charlotte Libov with the objective of teaching women the warning signs of heart disease and how to protect their health. According to Libov: Heart disease is the number one killer of American Women. Every year, an estimated 485,000 American women die of cardiovascular disease (heart disease & stroke), more than twice the number who die of all forms of cancer combined. An estimated 240,000 women die annually of heart disease, five times the number who die of breast cancer. Women suffer nearly half (49 percent) of the 480,000 heart disease deaths that occur each year. More women than men die of heart attacks within the first year of their first heart attack (44 vs. 27 percent). More women than men will suffer a heart attack within four years after their first heart attack (20 percent vs. 16 percent). Heart attacks kill nearly 21,000 women under the age of 65, and over 29 percent of them are under the age of 55. One in eight women age 45 and over has had a heart attack. Black women have a 33 percent higher death rate from coronary heart disease than white women, and a 77 percent higher death rate from stroke. Coronary heart disease is a major risk factor for stroke, which kills over 87,000 women each year. An estimated nearly 1 million Americans are currently living with heart defects. Some defects occur more commonly in women and can remain undetected until well into adulthood, putting their lives at risk.

Candlemas (C): February 2

Candlemas, 'Purification of the Blessed Virgin' or the 'Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple' occurs forty days after Christmas each year. It is traditionally observed on the 2nd of February. According to the Mosaic (Hebrew) Law a mother who has given birth to a male child is considered unclean for seven days; moreover she is to remain three and thirty days "in the blood of her purification"; for a female child the time of exclusion from sanctuary is doubled. When the time (forty or eighty days) is over, the mother was to "bring to the temple a lamb for a holocaust and a young pigeon or turtle dove for sin" for sacrifice; if she is unable to offer a lamb, she is to take two turtle doves or two pigeons; With these offerings, the priest would pray for her and she would be considered cleansed. (Leviticus 12:2-8) Forty days after the birth of Christ, Mary complied with this precept of the law. She redeemed her first-born at the temple (Numbers 18:15), and was purified by the prayer of Simeon in the presence of Anna the prophetess (Luke 2:22). Candlemas marks this event.

Groundhog Day (1886): February 2

Groundhog Day is an American tradition with roots in the Roman Empire, though it combines pagan ritual with Christian observances. It coincides with Candlemas, the date in the Christian calendar 40 days after the birth of Christ representing the purification of the Virgin Mary. This is the reason Groundhog day occurs on February 2nd. Various legends in Europe state that if the sun shines on Candlemas, winter will continue. If it is cloudy, winter will end early. The idea of using an animal to predict the length of winter comes from the Romans. The Romans often used the exit from hibernation of various animals to predict future events and omens. Punxsutawney Phil is the name of the Groundhog who is used to predict whether winter will continue or if it will be an early spring. It’s big event each year reported all of the United states. The first time Punxsutawney Phil was used to predict the weather was in 1886.

Heavenly Hash Day: February 2

Heavenly Hash is rice, pineapples, marshmallows and whipped cream all mixed together. Sometimes ice cream with nuts, marshmallows, fruits are used instead, which is then mixed up and plopped in a bowl. The majority of food holidays have no origin and are unofficial. Heavenly Hash Day is one.

Marmot Day: February 2

In the lower 48, we celebrate Groundhog Day. In Alaska, it is known as Marmot Day, (which is an animal part of the same family). This event was established in 2009 by the state of Alaska. Marmots, native to the Northern Hemisphere, are charismatic rodents about the size of a house cat. They are often hunted for their fur and meat, which is a delicacy in some parts of the world. The town of Owosso, Michigan also celebrates Marmot Day in July.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Day: February 2

Rheumatoid Awareness Day exists to give people with rheumatoid arthritis / rheumatoid disease, a day of recognition. Rheumatoid arthritis is a progressive inflammatory disease causing damage to joint and organ tissues, resulting in severe pain, frequent disability, and increased mortality. For most patients, current treatments neither relieve all symptoms, nor assure a healthy future. Remission is rare. Rheumatoid disease affects about one percent of the world’s population, with 1.6 to 2 million Americans currently diagnosed. Mayo Clinic says lifetime risk of the disease is 3.6 percent for women and 1.7 percent for men. Rheumatoid Awareness Day comes at the start of Heart Disease Awareness month, underscoring a serious aspect of rheumatoid disease: heart health.

Sled Dog Day, Ntl.(1925): February 2

National Sled Dog day honors Balto, perhaps the most famous of sled dog in history. It was in 1925 during a diphtheria epidemic in Nome, AK, that Balto and his master Gunnar Kaasen braved the Alaskan wilderness with the life saving medicine needed. Balto wasn’t alone. Like the Pony Express, sled dog teams ran in relays. Though Balto and his team relayed with another sled dog leader Togo driven by Leonhard. The two dogs and their teams ran a total of 674 miles and arrived in Nome, Alaska at just shy of 5:30 AM on February 2, 1925. National Sled Dog (also written Sled dog)is about acknowledging the place in history sled dogs have occupied in exploration, search and rescue, transportation and sport.

Over 40 years of his life was spent devoted to teaching music, with his favorite instrument, the small four string guitar like instrument called a ukulele. His wife continues his legacy with Ukulele Day and through the distribution of his books, music and videos. Mike Lynch passed away January 2, 2018.

Carrot Cake is a favorite dessert with a long history. Originally known as carrot pudding, the first recipe was published in 1591 within 'A Booke of Cookrye'. It next appears in John Evelyn's 'Discourse of Sallets' in 1699. American President George Washington is rumored to have served a version of carrot pudding to guests on November 25, 1783 to celebrate British Evacuation Day. The first time carrot pudding was referred to as carrot cake occurred in the 'Art of French Cookery' by AB Beauvilliers in 1827. Carrot Cake Day is an unofficial event without a sponsor. Four Chaplains Memorial Day (1943): February 3

During WWII, the USAT Dorchester, a troop ship, was making its way across the Atlantic when it was torpedoed by German U-boats of the Southern coast of Greenland. The passengers onboard fell into the water, but there were not enough lifejackets to go around. Four chaplains, Alexander Goode, John Washington, Clark Poling and George Fox (a Catholic, a Jew, and two Protestants), relinquished their lifejackets to save the lives of other passengers. Today is a memorial to their selfless sacrifice.
