USO Day, (1941): February 4

06:20 AM | -
USO Day marks the anniversary of the founding of the United Service Organization in the months prior to the United States entering WWII. For many servicemen, especially those on active duty, the USO is a bright spot in an otherwise bleak and scary war. Many of America's greatest entertainers have performed for the USO. USO HISTORY from their site: Supporting America’s troop was the first mission of the USO. In 1941, as it became clear that the nation was heading into World War II, several organizations mobilized to support the growing U.S. military: the Salvation Army, Young Men’s Christian Association, Young Women’s Christian Association, National Catholic Community Services, National Travelers Aid Association and the National Jewish Welfare Board. President Franklin D. Roosevelt created synergy among these agencies by forming the United Service Organizations, with the objective of providing the emotional support the troops needed. Over time, the USO has evolved, developing new programs and services to meet the ever-changing needs of the troops and their families, while holding fast to the original mission. Today, the USO continues to lift the spirits of America’s troops and their families, and will continue to be there for them until everyone comes home.

Chocolate Fondue Day: February 5

06:20 AM | -
Chocolate Fondue is an American invention from 1966. It was created by Chalet Suisse in New York City. The restaurant ceased to exist after the late 1980s, but the delicious social dessert has made a comeback in popularity within the past 5 years (all those Gen Xers like myself who grew up with fondue in the 1970s). The story goes that when Chalet Suisse relocated to 5th and 49th in New York City the Swiss Chocolate manufacturer of a new product called Toblerone were looking for a way to market the chocolate bar. Their publicist Beverly Allen came up with the idea of making a sweet fondue from the candy bar. The Swiss people thought she was nuts. Knorad Egi, the Swiss born chef of Chalet Suisse didn’t think it was a crazy idea and Chocolate Fondue was born.

Move Hollywood & Broadway to Lebanon, Pennsylvania Day: February 5

06:20 AM | -
Wellcat Herbs has created a unique niche for themselves by inventing crazy holidays. This is one. Lebanon, Pennsylvania was once the home office of the David Letterman show. The logic goes if one media icon could make Amish country home, why not the rest of Hollywood or Broadway? There was a 2010 Indy film called Lebanon, PA. Though the film was titled for the city, it was filmed elsewhere in Pennsylvania. Hardly seems fair!

Nutella® Day, World: February 5

06:20 AM | -
It is the dream of every brand manager to inspire a cult following for their product. Apple has done it. Now it looks like the hazelnut and chocolate spread invented in the 1940s, know by the brand name Nutella has also achieved this pinnacle of popularity. Created in 2006 by fans of the spread, World Nutella Day is deliciously celebrated by the spoonful around the world.

Shower with a Friend Day, Ntl.: February 5

06:20 AM | -
Winter is the coldest and loneliest season of the year. With dwindling daylight and Valentine's Day at its heart, February can often leave people feeling somber. National Shower with a Friend Day was created to inject a bit of humor into the season, while serving to educate people on the benefits of showering in fresh, filtered water. Your body absorbs more chlorine through the skin and lungs while showering than while drinking tap water. This can irritate your lungs and have seriously unpleasant side effects over time. Chlorine strips protein from your skin and hair, leaving it dry and itchy. Adding a filter to your shower can greatly reduce the presence of chlorine, hydrogen sulfide and heavy metals from your water. Your skin will thank you. Your lungs will thank you and your hair will thank you!

Weatherman's Day, Ntl. (1744): February 5

06:20 AM | -
John Jeffries was born on February 5, 1744. He is considered America’s first Weatherman (meteorologist). It was Jeffries who first began logging daily weather occurrences in Boston and providing reports to the population. In 1784, he made the first weather analysis using a balloon. National Weatherman’s Day is observed each February 5 as a reminder of Jeffries contributions and in recognition of the work done by today’s meteorologists in monitoring climate forecasts, providing warnings of major weather issues and helping to keep people safe the world over.

Chopsticks Day, Ntl.: February 6

06:20 AM | -
Chopsticks have been around for some time and are believed to have originated during the Shang Dynasty (1766 - 1122 BC) and were originally used for cooking. The pointed end of the chopsticks will tell you which country they originate from. Japanese chopsticks tend to have a needle point. Chinese a square point and Korean somewhere in between. Eating with chopsticks takes a little practice, but once mastered adds significantly to the enjoyment of Asian cuisine. National Chopsticks Day is your opportunity to show your skill and enjoy the ancient utensil.

Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, Intl. (2003): February 6

06:20 AM | -
International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, also referred to as FGM/C Day, marks the anniversary of Nigeria’s First Lady Stella Obasanjo’s declaration on "Zero Tolerance to FGM" in Africa. She made this declaration during a conference organized by the Inter-African Committee on Traditional Practices Affecting the Health of Women and Children (IAC) February 6, 2003.

Frozen Yogurt Day, Ntl: February 6

06:20 AM | -
Originally called Frogurt, frozen yogurt was invented by HP Hood in 1970. With the health food craze of the 1970s, it quickly gained popularity as an alternative to ice cream. In the 1980s, seizing upon the demand and opportunity, the TCBY chain of frozen yogurt stores was opened. By 1986, frozen yogurt had become a $25 million a year industry. In 2019 it became a $2.1 billion dollar industry. Frozen Yogurt Day celebrates this dessert treat. Many retailers and restaurants will offer free samples on this day. This event is unofficial with no sponsor.

Lame Duck Day (1933): February 6

06:20 AM | -
Lame Duck Day marks the anniversary of the 20th Amendment to the US Constitution: 20TH AMENDMENT “The terms of the President and Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January, and the terms of Senators and Representatives at noon on the 3d day of January, of the years in which such terms would have ended if this article had not been ratified; and the terms of their successors shall then begin.” Lame Duck refers to the period of time when an elected official nears the end of his tenure and his/her successor has been elected. Inauguration Day occurred on March 4 up through 1932. Congress usually had two sessions, the second of which was usually held from the December after the election of the next Congress until March. This session was commonly called the "lame duck session". The 20th Amendment moved the beginning of the new Congressional year to January 3 and the inauguration of the president to January 20, thus shortening the lame duck period from 4 months to 2 months.

Ronald Reagan Day (1911): February 6

06:20 AM | -
Ronald Reagan Day celebrates the birthday of Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States. Mr. Reagan served from January 20, 1981 – January 20, 1989. He was born on this day in 1911 in the city of Tampico, IL and died June 5, 2004 in Los Angeles, California.
