Plimsoll Day (1824): February 10

Plimsoll Day marks the birth of Samuel Plimsoll in 1824. Plimsoll was a member of the British Parliament and an advocate of sailors' safety. His work created the Plimsoll's bill, which ended the practice of overloading ships, a hazard which increased the danger of capsizing and impeded the ability to navigate ships safely. The bill passed in 1876 and instituted the Plimsoll Line, the mark you see on cargo ships to mark at which point the boat has reached full capacity. By 1894, the line was standardized based upon volume and weight.

What is interesting is in researching this we attempted to find a national or global non-profit dedicated to helping people nurture interpersonal relationships that could be used as a source for story ideas. There does not seem to be one; yet friendships and the ability to build them remain one of the top indicators of a happy and healthy life. The closest we could come was the Dale Carnegie Institute, which focuses more on business and networking than learning friend making and maintaining skills from an early age through life.

Peppermint Patty Day: February 11

If you've ever needed an excuse to eat chocolate and peppermint, today you have it. In 1940, Henry C. Kessler began selling peppermint cream covered in dark chocolate patty. He named it after the city, York, Pennsylvania, where he lived. It is unknown if February 11, 1940 is the day it first went on sale or was invented. It remained a regional treat until 1972 when Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company purchased Kessler's company and took the product national in 1975. In 1978, Peter Paul merged with Cadbury, which was acquired by Hershey in 1988.

This event was originally created by Monsignor Losito (May 7, 1931 - November 3, 2011) of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Reading, Pennsylvania. It continues on as part of his legacy, but is not officially sponsored.

Sick, World Day of (C)(1858): February 11

World Day of the Sick is a feast day of the Roman Catholic Church instituted on May 13, 1992 by Pope John Paul II. Beginning on February 11, 1993, World Day of the Sick is celebrated every year on the day of commemoration of Our Lady of Lourdes. All Christians are urged to seek 'a special time of prayer and sharing, of offering one's suffering'. Pope John Paul II was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease as early as 1991, an illness he disclosed later. It is significant that he decided to create a World Day of the Sick one year after his diagnosis. The Pope had written a great deal on the topic of suffering and believed in redemption and salvation through Christ. The feast of Lourdes was chosen because many pilgrims and visitors to Lourdes have reportedly been healed by intercessions of the Blessed Virgin. This event falls on the anniversary of the first appearance of the Virgin Mary to Saint Bernadette in Lourdes, France in 1858.

Sloan signs the first union contract in the history of the American auto industry. The strike was organized by the United Auto Workers (UAW), which wanted to be recognized as the sole bargaining authority for employees at GM factories. The UAW, founded in 1935, also demanded improved working conditions and job security for GM autoworkers.
