Dakar Rally (SA): Jan 5-17

Dakar Rally began in Paris over forty years ago and continues annually. From 2020-2024 the rally will bee hosted in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Its motto sums up the excitement of this car race: “A challenge for those who go." The Dakar Rally began when driver Thierry Sabine lost his way during the Abidjan-Nice Rally of 1977. His vision was to create a race that allowed the world to share scenery of the multi-day event. The race got its name from its first route beginning in in Paris, traveling through Algiers and finishing in the city of Dakar in Senegal. In 2009, due to security issues, the race moved to South America.

Daylight Savings in Fiji & Tonga commences on the 1st Sunday of November (Spring Forward) and ends on the 3rd Sunday of January (Fall Back). On this day we move the clock one hour ahead at 2AM in November or one hour back in January at 2AM in the morning on Sunday. The saying, “spring forward, fall back” is a good way to remember. This works in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres as the seasons are reversed. Benjamin Franklin was the first to propose daylight savings time in 1784. Modern DST was established in 1895. Throughout history there were several variations ranging from 30 minutes to two hours. Not everyone observes DST, which can make setting appointments very challenging. The main purpose of DST is to make better use of daylight hours for farming, early morning activities (such as children walking to school in the light instead of dark) and saving energy. Decade for Deserts and the Fight Against Desertification: 2011- 2020

The United Nations General Assembly, by its resolution A/RES/62/195 of 2007, declared 2010 to 2020 the United Nations Decade for Deserts and the Fight Against Desertification (UNDDD). Despite past and ongoing global efforts and a slow response to poverty eradication among dryland populations, the Assembly acknowledged the persistence of desertification. It declared the Decade a period for concerted global action.

The resolution mandates the pursuit of three objectives, which are:

1) Organizing activities to observe the Decade in order to raise awareness of (a) the causes of and (b) solutions to ongoing land degradation and desertification in the framework of the ten-year strategic plan and framework to enhance the implementation of the Convention (2008-2018);

2) Mobilizing financial and technical support to the Convention secretariat to support special initiatives in observance of the Decade as well as other observance events and activities worldwide; and 3) Monitoring and reporting on progress in preparation of the Secretary General's Report to the General Assembly at its 69th Session on the status of implementation of the resolution.

Dishonor List Day (Banishment List Day) began as a publicity stunt. New Years Day was chosen because it is known as a ‘slow news day’ and the chances of the stunt gaining traction was greatly increased. Dishonor List Day is the day Lake Superior State University releases its official list of Words Banished from the Queen’s English for Mis-use, Over-Use and General Uselessness. The list was first run in 1976. Each year people from around the world nominated hundred of words and phrases they’re sick of hearing and believe should be purged from the language. Hundreds of nominations are received each year, and LSSU Public Relations Office staff conduct dozens of news interviews, largely with radio stations throughout North America and sometimes overseas on all major networks, including Cable News Network, Associated Press, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and more. Additional stunts created to help raise awareness of the university include establishing the mythical Unicorn Hunters and the annual Snowman Burning on the first day of spring.

Dog Days of Summer (Southern Hemisphere): January 3-February 11

The Dog Days of Summer in the Southern Hemisphere are the hottest days of the year. They received their name because in ancient times they were based upon the movements of the star Sirius, which was also known as the 'Dog Star'. In pagan societies, a brown dog would be sacrificed to the god represented by Sirius, an attempt to mitigate extreme heat over the coming weeks. These are the direct inverse of the dog days in the Northern Hemisphere.
