Dydd Santes Dwynwen (C)(UK): January 25

Dydd Santes Dwynwen or St Dwynwen’s Day celebrates the Saint Dwynwen a Welsh princess from the 4th Century who gave up on true love (her father the king had arranged marriage with another). She fled the arranged marriage and became a nun. Legend says an angel provided her with a potion that made her forget her true love and turn him to ice. God granted Dwynwen three wishes then. Her first was to have her true love thawed; her second that all those truly in love receive God's help and her last, that she should never marry. She then headed to the island of Llanddwyn, where she became a nun and established a convent at Anglesey. Dwynwen is considered the Patron Saint of love and friendship in Wales. The Welsh treat this as their Saint Valentine's day.

Today marks the anniversary of the opening of Ellis Island on January 1, 1892. Ellis Island was the immigration gateway into the US on the East Coast in the late 19th Century through the mid 20th Century. Approximately 17,000,000 immigrants were admitted through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954 when it closed. Ellis Island was reopened in the fall of 1990 and remains one of the top tourist attractions in New York City.
