In light of recent negativity directed toward law enforcement nationally, there is a need to show law enforcement officers that our citizens recognize the difficult and sometimes impossible career they have chosen, in public service to us all. On January 9th of each year we will call our nation’s citizens to action in support of law enforcement. Those citizens who appreciate law enforcement and are discouraged about the negative attention being given to law enforcement are encouraged to take time on January 9, to show their support. This event first ran in 2015.

Leprosy Day, World: January 26

World Leprosy Day takes place on the last Sunday in January. The day aims to raise awareness of a disease that many people believe extinct, when in fact around 210,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. The first documented case occurred near 600BC. The last Sunday in January was chosen by French humanitarian Raoul Follereau in 1953, as the third Sunday from Epiphany from the Catholic calendar. The Catholic Church then reads the story of the Gospel where Jesus meets and heals a person with leprosy.

Library Selfie Day: January 22

Selfies are self-portraits taken with a cell phone, something quite difficult to do prior to 2008. It is inevitable then, that organizations would eventually tap into this trend and find ways to celebrate and promote their products and services. Library Selfie Day, created in 2014, encourages people to enter their local library and take a selfie with the books and other services offered, for posting on Social Media. Throughout the nation, thousands of public and private libraries hold special events on this day, including photography competitions for the best and most creative selfies. Annually on the fourth Wednesday of January.

Celebration of Life Day is a day set aside during Celebration of Life Month to focus specifically on the blessings brought to you by family, specifically children and grandchildren. The internet marks this day January 22. The sponsor of it, Women of Freedom USA, marks it January 21. There is a Celebrate Life Day occurring in June as well. That day, sponsored by Support Connections, honors cancer survivors and their families.

Each year The Geological Society picks a theme and 2020 is the Year of Life. Throughout the year programs will explore life in a geoscience context through research conferences, lectures, education and other Society activities. Tools are available from the organization for teachers and classrooms the world over. Topics include early life on planet earth, life in the depths of the oceans to the future of our planet and the possibility of life on Mars and other planets. Researchers, industry, economists and government bodies, as well as partner geoscience societies and organizations are all welcomed to get involved in this year long celebration of life.

Lohri (S)(H)(IN): January 13

Lohri is a cultural festival celebrated in the Punjabi region of India each year by the Sikhs and Hindus. It marks the end of the previous farming year and the financial beginning of the next farming year on the day following. It typically occurs on the 13th of January and features a large bonfire and several foods consumed during the festival including: gajjak, sarson da saag and makki di roti as well as a sweet rice mixed with jaggery and sesame seeds.
