Handwriting Analysis Week, Intl. (1737): January 19-25

You can tell a lot about a person by their handwriting. It lays bare insecurities, strengths, personality, proclivities and where they are their life. The study of handwriting is called graphology, and the person who studies it is a graphologist or graphoanalyst. Handwriting is individual to the person and it changes over time. Consider diary entries you made in your teens, checks you wrote in your early twenties. Go back and take a look at those and see how your own writing has changed. Increasingly with texting and computers, handwriting, especially cursive, is becoming a lost art. In fact, some schools don't even bother to teach cursive writing, which is a shame. It puts students at a disadvantage, especially in higher education or a business atmosphere. One writes 2-3 times faster in cursive then printing. International Handwriting Analysis Week is your opportunity to learn what your writing says about you, play with your signature and appreciate the written word. WIMA sponsors National Handwriting Day every year on the anniversary of John Hancock’s birthday, January 23, 1737. Hancock was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence and is famous for his large, bold signature.

Harlem Globetrotter's Day (1927): January 7

The Harlem Globetrotters first organized in 1926 as the Savoy Big Five. The Globetrotters are an exhibition basketball team focused on athleticism and comedic theater. From 1926 until know, the Harlem Globetrotters have played over 26,000 exhibition games in 122 different countries and territories. The Globetrotters won the World Professional Basketball Tournament in 1940, and enjoyed a revived success in the 1990s. With the rise of the NBA (National Basketball Association) back in the 1950s, the Globetrotters were eclipsed. Since then, a lot of Globetrotters have become some of the NBA's legends including Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton, Wilt "The Stilt" Chamberlain, Connie "The Hawk" Hawkins, and others. Today marks the anniversary of their first game on January 7, 1927.

Holocaust Victims' Day, World (1945): January 27

Holocaust Victims' Day remembers the horrific events which began in 1942. The day marks the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp by Russian soldiers on January 27, 1945. The Holocaust is one of the most significant tragedies in recent history - both in scale and in the mark it left on humanity. People were targeted due to their faith, physical and/or mental challenges, political views, color and sexual orientation, imprisoned and in many cases murdered or starved to death. People targeted by the Nazi regime for imprisonment and extermination included those of the Jewish faith, Catholic faith, Romani (Gypsies), Mentally Ill, Handicap, Communists, Persons of color and Homosexuals. The largest single group targeted and murdered were those of the Jewish faith, representing 25% of the world’s Jewish population. Though a much smaller worldwide population, 25% of the world’s Romani population were also exterminated during the Holocaust. This day is set aside each year to remember all the victims, regardless of faith, race, health or sexual orientation, as well as the circumstances leading up to and causing this international tragedy.
