Truth and Reconciliation, National Day of (CA): September 30

Residential schools are a shameful part of our history that continue to have a deep and lasting impact on Survivors, their families, and their communities across the country. We cannot forget this truth. As Canadians, we must all learn about the history and legacy of residential schools. Only when we face the hard truths of our past, can we truly move forward together toward a better future. The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, was joined today by the Executive Director of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR), Stephanie Scott, the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, Marc Miller, and Survivors from across the country to raise the Survivors’ Flag on Parliament Hill. This flag will fly in memory of the 150,000 Indigenous children who were forcibly separated from their families and communities to be sent to residential schools. It will honor the Survivors, their families, the communities whose lives were forever changed, and those who never came home. The residential school system in Canada robbed Indigenous children of their childhoods. It attempted to assimilate them, forcing them to abandon their languages, cultures, spiritualities, traditions, and identities. Many suffered physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and many never returned home. The painful legacy of the residential school system lives on today for Indigenous Peoples from coast to coast to coast. The orange and white Survivors’ Flag was designed by the NCTR in consultation with Survivors from across Canada as an expression of remembrance and to be shared with all Canadians. It features nine distinct elements, each with a special meaning. For example, the seeds depicted underneath the family and children represent the spirits of the children who never returned home. We still have work to do. Reconciliation is not the responsibility of Indigenous Peoples – it is the responsibility of all Canadians. It is our responsibility to continue to listen and to learn. The Government of Canada will continue to do just that and support First Nations, Inuit, and Métis in their healing journey. Together, we will build a better future for everyone.

Uncle Sam Day (1813): September 13

Today marks the anniversary of the creation of "Uncle Sam" in 1813. Uncle Sam is one of the most recognized symbols of the United States. During the War of 1812, soldiers stationed in Troy, New York, received rations of meat stamped with a "U.S." The supplier was Samuel Wilson. Eventually, soldiers began referring to the meat deliveries as Uncle Sam, the legend goes, and an icon was born. The first image of Uncle Sam premiered on this day in 1813. But, it would not be the last. The image of Uncle Sam in a white beard wearing a stars-and-stripes suit originated with Thomas Nast in 1869. You know his work. Nast is one of the first prolific political cartoonists. He created the image of the modern Santa Claus as a jolly bearded man in a red suit, the donkey for the Democratic Party, and the elephant for the Republican Party. However, the most famous representation of Uncle Sam was inspired by a British recruitment poster and came from the mind of James Montgomery Flagg in 1917. In this WWI poster, Uncle Sam is seen wearing a tophat and a blue jacket and is pointing straight to the viewer stating, "I Want You for the U.S. Army." The poster was effective and has become part of American iconography. In 1961, Congress issued a resolution recognizing Uncle Sam of Troy, New York, and erected a monument in his honor.

The US and Iran's first diplomatic meeting in 35 years (Persia) happened on September 26, 2013. The two nations dissolved diplomatic ties after the Shah's overthrow and the US Embassy's seizure in Iran by student radicals in 1979. The United States CIA and British MI-6 had led a coup in 1953, which overthrew the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh. At the time, Iran was one of the region's most progressive, pro-Western nations and considered a bridge between Europe and Asia. With the installation of the Shah in Iran, the people's mood toward the west changed. He was a repressive and ostentatious leader and engendered hatred in his people. Leading up to and upon his overthrow in 1979, political leanings in the region moved in an anti-West, anti-American direction. The most notable manifestation of this was the arrival of austere, highly conservative interpretations of Islam becoming the norm throughout the Arabian Peninsula and Persia in both Shi'a and Sunni nations. In May 2018, President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the treaty agreed to with Iran, resulting from this historic meeting. In 2022, the nations of Europe, Iran, and the United States seek to repair and reinvigorate the treaty that Iran obeyed and the United States violated.
