Marrakech Earthquake (MO)(2023): September 8

A devastating 6.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Morocco on Friday, September 8, 2023, shortly after 23:00. Less than 14 hours later, the quake already claimed over 1,000 lives, making it the most lethal earthquake the North African nation has experienced in over 120 years. Most of the fatalities occurred in the province of Al Haouz, situated west of the quake's epicenter and south of the famed city of Marrakech. Marrakech, a hub of economic and cultural activities, is frequented by tourists from around the globe. Its epicenter was pinpointed in the High Atlas mountains, roughly 72 kilometers (45 miles) southwest of Marrakech, a city with a population nearing 840,000. Marrakech's renowned historic walls, which date back to the early 12th century, its signature mosque, and its landmark areas sustained significant damage. Global and local rescue efforts face challenges accessing some of the worst-hit areas due to road obstructions caused by debris from centuries-old buildings and mountainous terrain.

World Day of Migrants & Refugees first ran in 1914 and was initiated by Pope Pius X. In 2019, and the date moved from early January to the last Sunday of September. There are three general classifications of refugees and migrants: Asylum seekers, refugees, and economic migrants. The British Red Cross defines each as follows: ASYLUM SEEKERS An asylum seeker flees their home and arrives in another country, whichever way they can. Makes themselves known to the authorities Submits an asylum application Has a legal right to stay in the country while waiting for a decision. In 2018, the UK received applications for asylum for 37,453 people (including dependents), far less than Germany (162,000), France (110,000), Greece (65,000) and Italy (49,000). REFUGEES Refugees prove they’d be at risk if they returned to their home country. Has had their claim for asylum accepted by the government Can now stay here either long term or indefinitely. Refugees have a right under the UK and international law to bring their immediate family members to join them. ECONOMIC MIGRANTS An economic migrant has moved to another country to work. They could be living there legally or illegally depending on how they entered the country; May or may not have a legal work permit.

A PUERTO RICAN CLASSIC NATIONAL MOFONGO DAY National Mofongo Day honors Puerto Rico's iconic dish, mofongo, coinciding with National Hispanic Heritage Month. Puerto Rican chef José Mendín launched the event in 2023 with a festive gathering at his restaurant La Placita. Mofongo traces its roots to the West African dish fufu, brought to the Caribbean by enslaved people. In Puerto Rico, this technique blended with Indigenous Taíno practices and Spanish culinary influences, evolving into the uniquely rich and flavorful mofongo enjoyed today. The name "mofongo" derives from the Angolan Kikongo term mfwenge-mfwenge, meaning "a great amount of anything at all." Historical recipes appear as early as 1859 in Puerto Rico's first cookbook, El Cocinero Puerto-Riqueño o Formulario, describing a version made with green plantains, garlic, lard or bacon, and seasonings, mashed and served with broth. Traditional mofongo is made by frying green plantain slices until tender and then mashing them in a wooden mortar (pilón) with garlic, pork cracklings (chicharrón), salt, and fat such as olive oil, lard, or butter. Broth enriches the texture, while balling or doming it adds to its appeal. Variations include mofongo de yuca (cassava), mofongo de pana (breadfruit), and combinations of multiple starches such as "bifongo" and "trifongo." Stuffed versions—like mofongo relleno—may contain seafood, poultry, or meats. Beyond its savory appeal, mofongo is beloved as a cultural emblem—reflecting Puerto Rico's African, Spanish, and Indigenous heritage. It is a symbol of identity, community, and culinary creativity, regularly featured in family meals, celebrations, and restaurants both on the island and across the diaspora.

For centuries, people have applied names to full moons to track the seasons and as a point of reference. The names listed below come from Native American and Colonial American traditions passed down through generations. Here are the common names for full moons in each month in the Northern Hemisphere (the Southern Hemisphere doesn't do this tradition): January: Wolf Moon—Named after the howling of wolves during the cold winter nights. February: Snow Moon—Named for the typically heavy snowfall. March: Worm Moon—As the ground thaws, earthworms emerge, attracting birds. April: Seed Moon—Time to plant for the fall harvest. May: Flower Moon—Named for the abundance of flowers in May. June: Strawberry Moon— due to the short harvesting season for strawberries in the northeastern United States. July: Buck Moon—when new antlers grow on male deer (bucks). August: Sturgeon Moon—when sturgeon fish are abundant in North America's Great Lakes. September: Harvest Moon—time to harvest crops. October: Hunter's Moon—game is at its fattest, allowing hunters to stock up for the winter months. November: Beaver Moon—when beavers build their winter dams. December: Cold Moon—long, dark, and cold nights. Full moon names vary between cultures, regions, and traditions; several full moons have alternative names. The above are the most common. A blue moon occurs when two full moons are in a single month, and February is the only month in the year that occasionally does not have a full moon. A blood moon describes a total lunar eclipse.
