Neighbor Month: September

06:20 AM | -
What's one small thing a neighbor did for you this week? If there's anything we've learned in our years of neighboring at Nextdoor, neighborhoods are built on small, simple actions: The coffee shop owner greets you by name every morning. The stranger who lets you go first in line at the pharmacy—the neighbor who waves from across the street. We want to hear more about the simple things you and others do to play a part in your neighborhood. Submit a story about a neighbor who inspires you, and we'll share some favorites and recognize them on National Neighbor Day, September 28th. We've seen the power neighborhoods have when we tap into them — especially in unprecedented times like these. We've been moved by the change that can come from the smallest neighborly gestures. It's why we're declaring September as Neighbor Month. It's a time to celebrate how neighbors have come together, in ways big and small, as so many have faced difficult challenges this year. Neighbors coming together also inspired Nextdoor's new look, which reminds us how powerful a simple wave can be. Here are a few neighbors who have inspired us recently: The neighbor in Madrid, Spain who created a Nextdoor group for others who were quarantined alone and quickly found 227 kindred spirits to keep him company virtually. The California grocery store owner who saw local volunteers sign up to help manage social distancing in line to keep his business open during the pandemic. The British woman who offered to make home-cooked meals for neighbors in need and soon found herself delivering 150 dinners a week with the help of others nearby. As part of Neighbor Month, Nextdoor is also kicking off a series of conversations about the future of neighborhoods — and how gestures that start small can lead to significant change. Stay tuned for details on how to participate here. https://nextdoorstory.com We look forward to hearing more about how you and your neighbors find simple ways to come together. Thank you for taking the time to make your neighborhood better. Sarah Friar, Nextdoor CEO

Neither Snow nor Rain Day (1914): September 7

06:20 AM | -
Neither Snow nor Rain Day is observed in the United States to commemorate the opening of the New York City Post Office on September 7, 1914. The observation is named to honor the inscription on the building, which reads: “Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night, stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” The James A. Farley Post Office building (also known as the New York City main post office building) was named in honor of the 53rd Postmaster General and erected in 1912.

Nephrology Nurses Week: September 13-19

06:20 AM | -
ABOUT NEPHROLOGY NURSES' WEEK Nephrology Nurses' Week, celebrated annually in September, honors the dedicated professionals who specialize in caring for patients with kidney disease. Organized by the American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA), this event recognizes the critical role nephrology nurses play in managing and treating renal health conditions. First established in 2005, Nephrology Nurses' Week highlights the specialized skills and compassionate care these nurses provide. Nephrology, the branch of medicine concerned with kidney function and diseases, requires expertise in managing chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury, and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Nephrology nurses are essential in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, dialysis centers, and outpatient clinics. They perform vital functions such as administering dialysis, educating patients about kidney disease management, monitoring patients' responses to treatments, and providing emotional support to patients and their families. The symptoms of kidney disease can be subtle and often include: —Fatigue. —Swelling in the legs and ankles. —Changes in urination patterns. —High blood pressure. Early detection and management are crucial, and nephrology nurses play a pivotal role in identifying these symptoms and implementing appropriate care plans. Nephrology Nurses Week is not just a celebration of these specialized nurses, but also a platform to raise awareness about kidney health. Through educational activities, outreach programs, and professional recognition, the event aims to enhance the visibility of nephrology nursing and inspire more healthcare professionals to join this vital field.

Neptune Day (1846): September 23

06:20 AM | -
On September 23, 1846, German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle of the Berlin Observatory discovered the 8th planet in our solar system, Neptune. He found it using mathematic equations from a predictive model developed by Urban Le Verrier. Blue in color, the planet is made of ice and has 14 moons orbiting it. Neptune requires 165 years to orbit the sun and is named after Neptune, the Roman god of the sea.

No Rhyme (Nor Reason) Day, Ntl.: September 1

06:20 AM | -
Today is International No Rhyme (Nor Reason) Day. It is dedicated to the idiom, "No rhyme nor reason," which means something that does not have any purpose or reason. First used in the English language around 1460 in John Russell's book "The Boke of Nurture," the saying became famous because Shakespeare used it in his play "Comedy of Errors" in 1590 and again in the 1600 play "As You Like It."

06:20 AM | -
NOTTINGHAM GOOSE FAIR: A 700-YEAR-OLD TRADITION Over 250,000 visitors flock to the Nottingham Goose Fair, one of the United Kingdom's oldest and most beloved annual events, each autumn. The fair is held at the Forest Recreation Ground and features rides, games, food stalls, and entertainment, drawing people of all ages to celebrate fun and tradition. The Nottingham Goose Fair's origins date back more than 700 years, with its name rooted in the medieval practice of trading geese at the event. First mentioned in 1284 (the time of Robin Hood), the fair initially served as a livestock market, with geese being driven from the Lincolnshire Fens to Nottingham for sale. Over time, the event evolved from a market fair to one focused on entertainment, and today, it has become one of the largest travel fairs in Europe. Held over the course of five days, typically in the first week of October, the fair features more than 500 attractions. From towering roller coasters and exhilarating thrill rides to traditional fairground favorites like carousels and candy floss stalls, the fair caters to thrill-seekers and families alike. In addition to the rides, visitors can enjoy a variety of food vendors offering classic British snacks and international cuisines, making it a lively and diverse experience. The event is immensely popular, with an estimated half a million people attending each year. Locals and tourists flock to the fair, eager to enjoy its unique atmosphere and comprehensive attractions. The fair's long-standing tradition and historical significance have helped cement its status as a key cultural event in Nottingham, drawing generations of families who attend year after year.Attendees come not only for the amusement but also for the sense of community and tradition. For many, the fair is a nostalgic trip back to childhood, while others attend to experience one of the country's most iconic fairs for the first time. Obesity Awareness Month, Childhood Ntl.: September

06:20 AM | -
Most of our food today is prepackaged, loaded with sugar, salt, and other things that make it taste good. Convenience has created a culture where 30% of adults are obese and 50% overweight. Worse, childhood obesity is now a norm, with 20% of children classified as such. Fat cells, once created, never disappear. They shrink or expand. These children have set themselves up for diseases that usually occur in middle age with a slowing metabolism, including diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Childhood obesity has become an epidemic and shows no chance of slowing. Because of this, President Obama created National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month in 2011. President Trump did not continue the month, but the CDC and other government entities continued to observe it. GEN X KIDS VERSUS GEN Z KIDS Going to school in the 1970s and 1980s, out of 1500 students, maybe ten were obese. Fat kids did not exist, for the most part. And yes, back then, we used the word fat. We played outside; computer games barely existed (we did have Pong and later Space Invaders and Pac-Man). To play them, you went to the arcade or pizza parlor and played standing up. We had Twinkies, candy bars, ice cream, and cookies, but most cakes and cookies we ate were homemade, not store-bought. Sweets were made with natural ingredients rather than fructose, extra sugar, preservatives, and trans-fats. Potato chips, soda, and treats were for special occasions, like when we had a babysitter, but not an everyday thing. Meals were homemade, not prepackaged, even though increasingly, both parents worked. We walked to school and were limited to two hours of television a day after homework. Bedtime was by 9 pm until high school. Yes, there was that annoying health food kick from the hippie movement Dad bought into for a couple of years in the mid-1970s. I still won't forgive him for spiking my orange juice with that horrible brewer's yeast or trying to convince me carob tasted like chocolate (eh...no). At school, we had an apple dispenser; candy and soda dispensers did not exist. It was a different time; overall, you didn't see fat kids. Fast forward 30 years. Rarely do you see children playing outdoors. Few walk to school, and you can always tell when the school year starts because your commute is twice as long with all those parents dropping their kids off. This month is about getting kids back to a healthy weight through education, increased activity, and better nutrition.

THE HISTORY OF ODD FELLOWS FRIENDSHIP MONTH Odd Fellows Friendship Month was launched in 2010 to highlight the importance of social connections and to address issues of loneliness and social isolation. The month-long event features a variety of activities and events designed to bring people together, create lasting friendships, and showcase the benefits of being part of a supportive community. Over the years, it has grown in popularity, with increasing numbers of local branches participating and expanding their outreach efforts. WHAT IS AN ODD FELLOW An Odd Fellow is a member of the Odd Fellows, formally known as the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Manchester Unity Friendly Society. Founded in the 18th century, the Odd Fellows originated as a mutual aid society, providing financial and social support to its members. The name "Odd Fellows" reflects the society's historical roots, when it was unusual or "odd" for people from different trades and walks of life to come together for mutual benefit. Today, the Odd Fellows continue to uphold their principles of friendship, love, and truth, offering their members social activities, support services, and charitable initiatives. HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN ODD FELLOWS FRIENDSHIP MONTH Attend Events—Local Odd Fellows branches host events throughout September, including coffee mornings, social gatherings, and educational workshops. These events are open to members and non-members and provide opportunities to meet new people and learn about the society. Join a Branch—Consider becoming a member of the Odd Fellows to enjoy the full range of social activities, support services, and community initiatives offered year-round. Volunteer—Offer your time and skills to support Odd Fellows events and activities, helping to foster a welcoming and inclusive community environment. Spread the Word—Use social media and other platforms to share information about Odd Fellows Friendship Month and encourage others to participate in local events.
