Knee Day, Ntl.: October 22

06:20 AM | -
National Knee Day highlights the importance of the knees and how to prevent injury—sponsored each year by the National Knee Society.

Preventing knee injuries is essential for maintaining long-term mobility and joint health. Here are ten things a person can do to minimize the risk of knee injuries:

  1. Warm Up Properly: Before engaging in physical activities, especially rigorous ones, warm up your muscles with low-impact exercises like walking or stationary cycling.
  2. Strengthen Quadriceps and Hamstrings: These muscles help support the knees. Regular exercises like squats, lunges, and leg curls can help keep these muscles strong and balanced.
  3. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Extra weight increases the stress on your knees. Keeping a healthy weight can reduce the risk of knee injuries and other joint problems.
  4. Wear Supportive Footwear: Proper footwear can help ensure proper foot and leg alignment, which can help prevent knee injuries. Avoid wearing worn-out shoes and choose shoes suitable for the activity you're engaging in.
  5. Use Knee Braces or Supports: If you have a history of knee problems or are participating in activities that put a lot of strain on the knees, consider wearing a knee brace or support to provide additional stability.
  6. Avoid Sudden Changes in Activity Intensity: Gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts to give your body time to adjust and reduce the risk of injury.
  7. Practice Proper Technique: Whether during sports or day-to-day activities, ensure you use the correct form. Consult a coach or trainer if you need clarification.
  8. Stay Flexible: Regular stretching can help maintain range of motion and reduce the risk of injuries. Focus on stretches that target the hamstrings, quadriceps, and calf muscles.
  9. Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration helps maintain the elasticity of ligaments and tendons, reducing the risk of tears or injuries.
  10. Listen to Your Body: If you feel pain (especially sharp, sudden pain) or discomfort in your knee, it's essential to stop the activity and rest. Pushing through pain can lead to more severe injuries.
Remember, while these tips can help reduce the risk, it's impossible to eliminate the risk of injury. Consult a healthcare professional if you have concerns about your knees or any potential injuries.

Pastoral Care Week: October 22-28

06:20 AM | -
Organizations and institutions worldwide will recognize the spiritual needs of those we serve and the spiritual care given through professional chaplaincy and pastoral counseling within our communities.

Regardless of spiritual, religious, or cultural background, Pastoral Care Week celebrates those who provide spiritual support to others. It is supported by the Coalition On Ministry In Specialized Settings Network:  The Network on Ministries in Specialized Settings, whose members provide care in specialized settings such as hospitals, prisons, businesses, industries, long-term care facilities, pastoral counseling centers, hospices, military settings, nursing homes, corporations, congregations of sisters, priests and brothers, schools and universities throughout the world.

Many institutions will celebrate Pastoral Care Week by honoring the work and gifts of pastoral/spiritual caregivers locally and internationally, as well as the spiritual needs of those who serve. Among the celebrations are hand-blessing ceremonies for health workers, open houses, poetry jams by clients, lecture series, and luncheons.

Pastoral/Spiritual Care week provides a unique opportunity to both have a conversation to address suffering related to loss and trauma and to seek opportunities for strengthening spiritual resilience amid them.

Priests Day, Worldwide: October 22

06:20 AM | -
The first World Priest Day began on the third Sunday in September 2000. The event grew from an idea in September of 1998, when the Worldwide Marriage Encounter (WWME) community in the Diocese of Knoxville, TN, decided to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the diocese by honoring all priests. The bishop & priests were so appreciative that the leaders of the local ME community shared the idea with the leaders of other communities in the Southeastern US, with several communities adopting the concept in 1999.

In 2003, WWME reached out to the church and invited other lay groups to join in the celebration of affirming the men who faithfully serve as our beloved priests. In June of 2006, WWME changed the day of World Priest Day to the 4th Sunday in October to coincide with the Serra Club's celebration of Priesthood Sunday, effective in 2007.

World Priest Day is now celebrated concurrently with Serra Club's Priesthood Sunday. Learn more about Priesthood Sunday at serraus.org and find a Serra Club near you.

Saffron Day, (AU)(2008): October 22

06:20 AM | -
From the Sponsor:

"Saffron Day is a day to honor the life of little Deyaan Udani, a bright seven-year-old boy with an infectious smile, who tragically passed away in 2016. Deyaan and his older sister Naisha had learned about organ donation at school and had told their parents they wanted to be organ donors to help save others. Deyaan's parents' decision to donate his organs meant he saved four lives. Deyaan's family came up with the idea of Saffron Day because orange was Deyaan's favorite color and because Saffron symbolizes courage, strength, and sacrifice, qualities seen in little Deyaan."

Please do it for Deyaan by wearing orange this Saffron Day! #doitfordeyaan
