Clergy Appreciation Month began as Pastor Appreciation Day by Jerry Frear, founder of Under His Wings. It later became Clergy Appreciation Month, a month open to faith leaders, including rabbis, monks, imams, priests, and pastors of all faiths. Frear started the original Pastor Appreciation Day based upon a survey he and his staff conducted in 1992 that found many were unhappy in their jobs. The day focuses on celebrating the support, comfort, and wisdom faith leaders impart and their essential role in supporting the local community. Appreciating clergy seems to be working. When asked today, most faith leaders are devoted to their mission, determined, and enjoy working within their communities. Clergy Appreciation Month is about saying thank you to the shepherds of faith and learning more about what they do and how they do it.

International Coffee Day began in Japan on September 29, 1983, as a promotion by The All Japan Coffee Association. In the United States, "National Coffee Day" emerged in 2005, and in 2017 it expanded to a 2-3 day event. Coffee remains one of the world's favorite beverages, and its origins are in North Africa and the Middle East (MENA). There is debate about whether Yemen or Ethiopia can claim its discovery as far back as the 9th century AD. Whether a goat herders discovery or the concoctions of Sufi monks, the written evidence of coffee drinking and cultivation begins in Yemen during the early 15th century. By 1414 notations show the drink in Mecca, the Islamic holy city. By the early 1500s, coffee was a staple beverage throughout the Muslim world. Coffee entered Europe via Malta, then to Italy before spreading throughout the continent, quickly gaining favor in Europe by the 1600s. Coffee did have its share of controversy. Orthodox Christians were banned from drinking it because it originated with Muslims. Coffee houses in Europe often prohibited women from entering, and some religions, including Mormonism, shun the drinking of the beverage because it has caffeine. Today coffee is a social drink, a meal topper, and a daily luxury enjoyed by billions of people worldwide. It is a multi-billion dollar business, with varieties ranging from cardamom and light roast to hickory and dark roast. The top 5 coffee producing countries as of 2021 are: Brazil (2,680,515 metric tons) Vietnam (1,542,398 metric tons) Columbia (754,376 metric tons) Indonesia (668,677 metric tons) Honduras (475,042 metric tons) The best way to celebrate International Coffee Day? Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Month, Ntl.: October

This event used to occur on the third full week of October but moved to a monthly event in 2017. As homecoming gets underway and students return to class, this US government-sponsored week seeks to raise awareness about the dangers of binge drinking and alcohol abuse. National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Month is supported by several institutions, NGOs, and campuses.

National Cybersecurity Awareness Month focuses on cyber security, the dangers of cyber crimes, and what we can do to prevent them. Cyber crimes are rising, with the internet touching almost all aspects of our daily lives. These include identity theft, credit card theft, Ponzi schemes, bait and switch, extortion, spying, and bullying; almost anything that can happen in the real world has a web world cousin. This month, Homeland Security, police, and other organizations devoted to fighting crime and national security will launch public education campaigns and workshops to help people spot attacks. The best way to observe this month is to check your cyber security. 1) When was the last time you updated your virus database? 2) Can you spot a phishing email when you see one? 3) Have you fully scanned your computer to ensure there are no Trojan horses, malware, or unauthorized access points? 4) Are you using a VPN when you’re in public to protect your information from prying eyes? 5) Do you use a privacy screen on the computer you use in public? 6) When was the last time you updated your passwords? 7) Have you set your privacy settings on mobile devices and social media to give you security? You can do these things to increase your cybersecurity, and this is the month to do it. Many software and hardware manufacturers will promote security-related products in honor of this month.

Daylight Savings in Australia’s Southern states commences on the 1st Sunday of October (Spring Forward ) and ends on the 1st Sunday in April (Fall Back). On this day, we move the clock one hour ahead at 2 AM in October or one hour back in April at 2 AM on Sunday. The saying, “spring forward, fall back,” is an excellent way to remember. The memory tool works in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. American Benjamin Franklin was the first to propose daylight savings time (DST) in 1784. Modern DST began in 1895. Throughout history, several variations were adopted, ranging from 30 minutes to two hours. Not everyone observes DST, which can make setting appointments very challenging. National Depression Education & Awareness Month is sponsored each October by Pharmacists Planning Service, Inc. The Center for Disease Control defines depression as a mental illness. It can be costly and debilitating to sufferers, adversely impacting the course and outcome of ordinary chronic conditions, such as arthritis, asthma, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity. Depression also can result in increased work absenteeism, short-term disability, and decreased productivity.

Who Tends to be Most Depressed?
According to the CDC, the majority of depressed persons share one or more of the following traits:

Persons 45-64 years of age
Women
Persons of color
High school dropouts
Divorced but not remarried
Unemployed
Those without health insurance

These categories form the basis for most persons suffering from depression.
