Advertising Week, Mexico City (MX-MX): Octobe 31 - November 2

06:20 AM | -
Advertising Week is a conference and the world's premier gathering of marketing & communication leaders. This event occurs in London, Mexico City, New York City, Sydney, and Tokyo on different dates throughout the year. Established in 2004, Advertising Week is a global thought leadership platform featuring the industry's best and brightest. Advertising Week combines inspiring thought leaders with engaging special events and year around content. Advertising Week draws from the brand, agency, technology, startup, media, and broader cultural communities, focusing on critical conversations designed to drive the business forward and influence the global industry. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. LEEP often estimates dates based on the previous year's schedules, as the final dates are only a few months, weeks, or days before the event. If the date is known to be estimated, you will see an (est) following the date in the title.

Books for Treats Day: October 31

06:20 AM | -
Books for Treats Day falls on Halloween and aims to replace candy with books as Halloween treats. Created by Rebecca Morgan, it started in San Jose, California's Willow Glen neighborhood, in 2001. She would eventually say. "Feeds the kids' minds, not their cavities." The movement has spread across the United States and Canada, where Trick or Treating is a Halloween tradition.

Bug Busting Day, Ntl. (UK): October 31

06:20 AM | -
National Bug Busting Day occurs three times per year in the United Kingdom: January, June, and October. It is a concentrated effort to stem the tide of lice infections within schools and the general population. Through the registered charity Community Hygiene Concern, the government teaches parents, educators, and pharmacists how to detect and stop the spread of head lice and provides affordable Bug Busting kits. Community Bug Busting Days began with the late Dr. RJ Donaldson, affectionately known as Paddy. Dr. Donaldson demonstrated in the 1970s that an intensive detection/treatment campaign could dramatically cut the prevalence of head lice. He was the tireless mentor of the Bug Busting Days organized by Community Hygiene Concern, taking a personal interest from 1986 in our development of wet detection methods in preference to less effective dry or damp methods. Today Bug Busting Days are organized in partnership with the Department of Health. Lice are a big problem in schools. Once they infect an individual, these parasites can be very difficult to exterminate. The following are some facts: The eggs of head lice usually take seven to ten days to hatch. Combing dry or damp hair with a fine-tooth comb is not a reliable way to detect lice. Metal combs are not suitable for louse detection because these combs are primarily nit combs. Lice caught between the tightly spaced teeth remain unnoticed against the metal and can be combed back into the hair unharmed at subsequent strokes. No studies prove that wet head lice grasp hairs more tightly, thus hampering their removal with a fine-tooth comb. You do not need head-to-head contact to catch lice; proximity will do it. Head lice are a community problem. Approximately 20% of head lice cases occur in people over 16 or under four years old.

Caramel Apple Day, Ntl.: October 31

06:20 AM | -
No party, especially a Halloween party, is complete without apples, and caramel turns this harvest fruit into candy on a stick. Caramel Apples are the invention of Kraft food company employee Dan Walker in the 1950s. The fall treat was so successful that in 1960 a patent was issued that allowed caramel apples to be mass produced. Caramel Apples are different from candied apples (invented in 1908 by William W. Kolb in New Jersey). Candied apples are dipped in a red cinnamon sauce, which dries transparent red and hard. Caramel Apples dance in melted caramel.

Chiang Kai-shek Day (TW)(1887): October 31

06:20 AM | -
Chiang Kai-shek (October 31, 1887 - April 5, 1975) was a military leader and politician who fought against communism. With the establishment of the communist government in China in 1949, Chiang Kai-shek fled to Taiwan and continued to lead the struggle against communism until his death in 1975. Chiang Kai-shek is the person responsible for the creation of Taiwan and its separation from China. To this day, China considers Taiwan Chinese territory and does not recognize it as a state. From 1955-1979, the United States acted as a protector. With the re-establishment of relations with China beginning in 1972, the United States ended diplomatic ties with Taiwan and established them with China to preserve the more lucrative arrangement. As of this writing, only 13 countries and the Vatican continue to have full diplomatic relations with the island country.

Halloween: October 31

06:20 AM | -
Halloween is one of the most famous and celebrated holidays in the United States. Each year, on the eve of All Saint's Day, October 31, American kids and grown-ups dress up as mythical monsters or historical and pop-culture figures and honor the dead and their spirits. The ritual of trick-or-treating, knocking on the doors of neighbors dressed in costume, is a highly anticipated event and considered a right of passage in the United States. The neighbor provides a treat, usually candy, in order not to be the victim of a trick. Halloween is said to be the Catholic continuation of the ancient Celtic festival Samhain, a time when ghosts and other creatures of the night were supposed to roam the land. The holiday has been celebrated in one form or another since 834 BC. Aside from dressing up, Halloween is a celebration of food and the harvest. Pumpkins, apples, cake, and nuts are just a part of the traditional Halloween table. Carving pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns to ward off evil spirits is another time-honored tradition.

Adopt-a-Dog Month, (AHA): October

06:20 AM | -
Consider adopting a dog during the American Humane Association's October annual "Adopt-a-Dog Month®." Each year, an estimated 3-4 million animals wait in shelters, hoping for someone to give them a safe and loving home. Most never find a hero to adopt them and are euthanized. If you're considering getting a dog, be a hero and adopt a rescue animal from your local shelter. You'll be saving a life and significantly improving yours.

Dogs are amazing, supportive, and heroic companions who can make a huge difference in your world. Dogs are best friends and exercise buddies, provide animal-assisted therapy, and help with challenges. Plus, who doesn't want a fuzzy face to greet you after a hard day at work? Your local shelter is the perfect place to find dogs of every type, size, age, and personality, all waiting for a loving home. Or, if you prefer a particular breed that isn't currently available at a shelter, go online to find a legitimate breed-specific rescue group looking for adopters like you.

Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month: October

06:20 AM | -
October is ASPCA’S Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month, and there’s no better way to celebrate than by bringing home a furry friend from your local shelter and providing a loving forever home. Should you go big or small? The choice is up to you!

There is a misconception that you need a big house to have a big dog. That’s a pity because many wonderful dogs fail to find forever families simply due to their size. While these dogs have a lot of love to give, they don’t need a mansion to be happy. They need a pet parent with a big heart who loves them and takes them out for walks.

If you’ve been thinking about adding a four-legged friend to your family, this is the month to do it. Check with your local shelter for help and programs to bring your new friend home.
