Banned Books Week: September 24-30

We believe we live in a world where books are no longer banned or pretend we do. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, especially for junior high and high school students, generally referred to as "Young Adult Readers." Typically banned books discuss sexuality, are contrary to dominant religious views, are political, don't support a nation's manufactured heritage, or touch on topics people in power wish to suppress. Examples include Israel's erasure of history that doesn't celebrate its preferred narrative. The banning of non-Islamic religious texts in several Gulf nations and the increasing vigor by several states in the United States to ban books, mentions, or instruction in schools and public libraries relating to non-white lived experiences and controversial gender studies. This week focuses on what those in power try to prevent you from learning, thinking, or believing and the importance of supporting the freedom to read what you want. After all, without that freedom, the world would still be flat, evolution would be extinct, and the planet would be just 5,500 years old. Celebrate Banned Book Week by being a rebel. National Cherries Jubilee Day honors the British dessert, which includes cherries, sauce, and brandy over vanilla ice cream. The dessert is then lit on fire, creating a blue flame. Auguste Escoffie created this dessert for Queen Victoria of England's 1897 Diamond Jubilee celebration. The event was held on Sunday, June 20, 1897, and marked the 60th anniversary of her throne inheritance.

The day raises awareness and appreciation of women, daughters, and girls in a nation prone to patriarchy and was quickly adopted internationally in several countries. Daughters Day has mistakenly been picked up in the United States as a fixed observance on September 25 each year, a misreading of the original event that moves dates. The American observance is an internet invention, unofficial and unsponsored. International Daughters Day is the actual and official event each year, and it always occurs on the 4th Sunday of the month.

Deaf Dog Awareness Week occurs during National Dog Week and Deaf Awareness Week. Its purpose is to educate the public about these amazing animals and the services available to owners and facilitate adoptions. Deaf dogs are no more difficult to raise or train than their hearing counterparts. Deaf dog owners regularly encourage other responsible pet owners to consider adopting a deaf dog when looking for a new family member. Few of these people would consider themselves "special" - they're just ordinary people who love their dogs and are willing to communicate with them using sign language and body language rather than words.
