Buddha Purnima is an important day for Buddhists and Hindus. This holiday commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Gautama Buddha and always falls on the full moon night in the month of Vaisakha of the Hindu calendar. In the Gregorian calendar, this occurs in April or May. Lord Buddha was the founder of the Buddhist religion and is said to be the ninth avatar of Vishnu. Buddha Jayanti's main celebrations occur in Bodh Gaya (Bihar, India). Bodh Gaya is the most sacred place for Buddhists. Temples are decorated, and prayers, sermons, and non-stop recitations of Buddhist scriptures resonate in monasteries, religious halls, and homes. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. A lot of Americans think Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day. It's not. Cinco de Mayo, Spanish for "May Fifth," marks the anniversary of the Mexican army's entrenchment and ultimate victory in Puebla against the French army on May 5, 1862, during the Franco-Mexican War. This conflict ran concurrent with the American Civil War (1860-1864) and lasted from 1861-1867. The French were ultimately defeated. Americans use Cinco de Mayo as a day to celebrate Mexican culture, specifically the music, food, and drinks. Ironically, it's not a big deal in Mexico, but it might as well be Latin Saint Patrick's Day in the United States. It's huge. Like many events, Canada and other nations globally have begun hosting Cinco de Mayo celebrations in their countries as a tribute to one of the world's favorite food categories, Latino culture, and the now iconic beverage of tequila.

The fourth Friday after Easter is Great Prayer Day, Common Prayer Day, or in Dutch, "Store Bededag," a public holiday celebrated in Denmark. On Store Bededag, the Danes walk through Langelinie or Kastellet, listen to a choir, and eat specially-made buns on the holiday's eve. The day begins with the bells ringing, particularly around Christianshavn. There is no work during this day, and fasting is encouraged. This event is a public holiday in Denmark that began in 1686.

The hoagie (also known as a submarine sandwich) is an American original, and it first appeared in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1992, then-Mayor Ed Rendell declared it the "official sandwich of Philadelphia," initiating the official Wawa Hoagie Day at City Hall. Wawa is a regional convenience and gas station retailer. The hoagie is a built-to-order sandwich on a long Italian roll, typically filled with deli meat and cheese, garnished with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and onions, and finished with a drizzle of oregano-vinegar dressing. Hoagies can be filled with tuna, chicken cutlets, and roasted vegetables, among other fillings. National Hoagie Sandwich Day is celebrated with hoagie shops providing free (or discounted) hoagies to local law enforcement, firemen, and other civil servants. The actual day of this promotion can vary. Wawa often holds it in June or July near the Fourth of July holiday, rather than on National Hoagie Day. Some stores will give hoagies to the first 50 or 100 customers on this day.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes into the Earth's shadow and appears to go dark. Eclipses can occur one to three times a year and fall into the following categories:

Partial—A partial lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through a portion of the Earth's shadow, the umbra, covering a part of the Moon, giving a reddish-brown hue to the side shadowed by the Earth.

Penumbral—A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through the Earth's outer shadow, also known as the penumbra, dimming its intensity and giving it a gray or brownish color.

Total—A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth's shadow completely covers the Moon as it passes in front of the Sun. During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon appears reddish-brown. Unlike a solar eclipse, you can watch a lunar eclipse with the naked eye.

Martin Z. Mollusk Day is a fictional event based on a character named Martin Z. Mollusk, a hermit crab who serves as the mascot for Ocean City, New Jersey. The character was created by Mark Soifer, the former public relations director of Ocean City, as a part of the city's efforts to promote tourism in a fun and whimsical way. Martin Z. Mollusk Day features the annual "Creep" on the first Saturday of May, where a hermit crab sits on the beach. According to local lore, summer will come a week early to the shore town if it sees its shadow. Martin Z. Mollusk has become a beloved figure in Ocean City, and many visitors and residents look forward to his appearances and antics throughout the year.

International Day of the Midwife was created in 1991 by the International Confederation of Midwives and is observed in over 50 countries. Today, 80 percent of those alive were born with the help of a midwife. In the United States, midwives attend approximately ten percent of births in hospitals, birth centers, and homes. Pregnancy and childbirth enormously impact the health of women, newborns, and families, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and socio-economically. The goal of the midwifery model of care is to support women and their families in birthing their babies safely, unhindered, and confidently. Every woman deserves access to a midwife's high-quality, safe, personalized, attentive, affordable, and respectful care.

National Day of Awareness for Missing & Murdered Native Women and Girls highlights the disproportionately high murder rates faced by American Indian women, the lack of data on missing American Indian and Alaska Native women, and the case of Hanna Harris as an example; S. RES. 144 from the US Senate designates May 5 as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Native Women and Girls.
