The theme for Girls in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) focuses on digital skills for life. To enable girls and young women to thrive in STEM careers, it is important for them to acquire skills in both using and creating technology in the digital world. ITU (International Telecommunication Union) and its partners aim to inspire and encourage girls to pursue a future in ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) and empower them by providing the necessary skills, confidence, and support to achieve their goals. This effort is ongoing every year to promote gender equality and inclusivity in the field of ICT.

Hey! Day (US-PA): April 27 (est)

Hey Day at the University of Pennsylvania combines the customs of Straw Hat Day and Graduation into a single event known as Hey Day. The University of Pennsylvania explains: "It all started in 1916. Hey Day was established as a "Moving-Up" celebration, modeled after a similar custom recently established at Syracuse University. Its purpose was formal, to mark the advancement of each class. In 1931, Class Day and Hey Day combined into a single celebration, with Ivy Day also being moved to the same date. At the time, the festival consisted of a traditional ceremony in Irvine Auditorium, followed by the planting of the ivy plant. Hey Day included reading the Class History, Class Prophecy, and Class Poem, the presentation of the four Senior Honors Awards, and the announcement of those elected into various honorary societies. Through the years, the emphasis of Hey Day shifted from formal assemblies to student celebrations, marked by the introduction of the Parade of Classes in 1937 and the incorporation of the Junior Cane March in 1965. In recent decades Hey Day represents the official passage of the junior class to senior status. It is characterized by thousands of marching students parading around campus sporting fake straw hats, red T-shirts, and canes."

Korean Leaders Meet (KR/KP)(2018): April 27

It was the handshake seen worldwide on April 27, 2018, when South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met at the border separating North and South Korea and shook hands. It is the first time since the break out of the Korean War on June 25, 1950, that the leaders of either country have met and stepped onto each other's soil. The Korean war continues as undecided.

National Morse Code Day marks the anniversary of the birth of Samuel F. B. Morse, the American artist, and inventor who designed and developed the first successful electromagnetic (magnetism caused by electricity) telegraph system using a code of dashes and dots in 1836. He called it Morse Code. Morse was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts April 27, 1791, and died on April 2, 1872.

Sultana Disaster Anniversary (US-AR, TN)(1865): April 27

On April 27, 1865, at approximately 2:00 AM, the day after President Lincoln's assassination and after the end of the Civil War, about 1,168 (actual total unknown) Union soldiers, civilian passengers, and crew were killed aboard the steamboat Sultana on the Mississippi River, near Memphis, Tennessee. The boat was designed to carry just 365 people, including its crew of 85. It was overloaded with 2,000+ people attempting to return home after surviving as POWs. Time and luck were against it. Throughout the war, the two-year-old ship was poorly maintained. Its owners saw an opportunity to make a fast buck, ferrying returning soldiers up the river home. Additionally, the river was at spring high water levels from the melting snow and changing seasons. When the boiler powering the ship exploded, the wooden vessel quickly became consumed by flames, burning many alive in their beds and sending many more into the fast-moving, frigid waters of America's largest river in darkness. Many would drown, and others would die from hypothermia before rescue boats could arrive. The destruction of the Sultana is considered the worst maritime disaster in American history to this day. The captain died in the explosion. To this day, no person or organization has been held responsible for the disaster. Monuments are in Memphis, Tennessee; Muncie, Indiana; Marion, Arkansas; Vicksburg, Mississippi; Cincinnati, Ohio; Knoxville, Tennessee; Hillsdale, Michigan and Mansfield, Ohio. The shipwreck was discovered in 1982. In 2015, the Sultana Disaster Museum opened in Marion, Arkansas.

Visitors can explore the tall ships and other vessels docked in Pensacola harbor, meet the crew members, and learn about the history and stories behind the ships. In addition to the ships, the festival also includes live music, food and beverage vendors, craft vendors, and various maritime-themed activities with reenactments, maritime exhibits, and educational programs related to the history and culture of sailing.

Tapir Day, World: April 27

World Tapir Day raises awareness of the species of tapir that inhabit Central and South America and Southeast Asia. One of its objectives is to raise funds to purchase land to protect the animal's habitat from human encroachment. Tapirs are large herbivorous mammals native to the jungle and forest regions of South America, Central America, and Southeast Asia. As large herbivores, tapirs are invariably the first species affected by human encroachment and amongst the last to return to regrowth forests. They require substantial tracts of undisturbed land to maintain a genetically-diverse population. Tapirs are threatened by human activity, including mining, palm oil plantations, roads, and settlements. They form an essential part of the ecosystem as seed dispersers and are one of the oldest surviving species in the animal kingdom. All tapirs are endangered species. Saving tapirs helps to protect the rainforest. Saving rainforests helps to save the planet and prevent climate change.
