They are instrumental in furthering the school's mission to provide a setting for teaching, learning, and attaining competence and confidence. School districts hire them to enhance their ability to meet their academic mission, especially where home, school, and community collaboration is the key to student success.

Wife-carrying originated in the United Kingdom over twelve centuries ago; on June 8, 793 AD, Viking raiders rampaged into Lindisfarne on the northeast coast of England, destroying the monastery and reportedly carrying off the local women who were forced to become wives and slaves. Such "wife-carrying" continued intermittently for around 300 years. Wife carrying, this time as a sport rather than spoils, was re-introduced to Britain in 2008 after an absence of nearly 900 years. The modern sport started in Finland, with the first Wife Carrying Championships held in 1991. In 1999, the United States added similar games. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Ging Zat, or "Awaking of the insects" in Chinese, is a rather funny tradition in Hong Kong culture. It's the day each year when insects emerge from hibernation, and tradition states that the gates of hell open and the spirits of the dead return to the world of the living. It is a time to honor and appease these spirits with offerings of food and other gifts. The aggrieved persons hit a paper puppet of a villain or an enemy with a shoe or slipper to expel lousy luck and misfortune and ward off negativity and evil spirits. Effigies represent a specific person, such as a political figure, spurned lover, or a business rival. Participants may take turns hitting it with a shoe or slipper while shouting insults and curses; it is quite effective at releasing negative emotions and channeling them into the representation rather than the actual person.
