In Northern Ireland, July 12 is the Orangemen’s Day. Otherwise known as The Glorious Twelfth, this is a bank holiday celebrated Monday when it falls on a weekend. It commemorates the Battle of Boyne. Public offices, businesses, and transport services are on special holiday timetables, and marches organized by the Lodges of the Orange Order are held. March participants dress in suits with black bowler hats, white gloves, and collarettes, usually in orange and draped around the neck to form a V-shape. Collarets indicate the lodge number and position of the wearer. The Battle of the Boyne occurred on July 1, 1690, near Drogheda on the east coast of Ireland between the forces of King James VII of Scotland and James II of England. Prince William of Orange, who later became King William III, emerged the victor. At its base, the Battle of the Boyne is the struggle between Catholics and Protestants for Ireland, with Prince William of Orange representing the latter and King James, the former. The actual battle did not happen on July 12 but on July 1. The dates differ today because the Gregorian Calendar replaced the Julian calendar in 1752.

Imagine life without the paper bag. We use them for lunch, insulation, doggy bags, and airline nausea reduction receptacles. They carry groceries, provide easy gift wrapping, hold fried or popped food, and can even calm us down when we're hyperventilating. They are a fantastic invention first created by Francis Wolle on August 16, 1852, and perfected by Margaret E. Knight with U.S. Patent 116,842 (Improvement in Paper-Bag Machines, July 11, 1871.) July 11 is the anniversary of the square bottom paper bag used worldwide and is, therefore, International Paper Bag Day. It is also a celebration of female inventors, of which Ms. Knight excelled.

Patent Day commemorates the passing of the Patent Act of 1790. The US Patent System allows the inventor to protect and profit from a unique product or idea. The Patent Act of 1790 was the first act passed by the United States Federal Government on April 10, 1790, a year after the constitutional ratification. A patent is ‘any useful art, manufacture, engine, machine, device, or any improvement thereon not before known or used.’ Obtaining a patent grants the applicant the ‘sole and exclusive right and liberty of making, constructing, using and vending to others to be used’ of his invention for a specific period.

Pecan Pie Day: July 12

Pecan Pie Day is a celebration highlighting one of the most loved pies, the pecan pie. Though a Southern staple, people cannot resist the buttery smell of the pecan pie cooked on this day. The makers of Karo syrup popularized the pecan pie, but the origin of this pie is France, and the French brought it to New Orleans. Personal Story from Laura: "My first encounter with pecans occurred when I was about six. Mom and Dad had another couple over to play Bridge. It turns out they didn't have enough pecan pie for the adults and kids, so they told us kids, all four of us, that we had to be 18 years of age to eat pecan pie. We believed them. I would be 18 the first time I tasted pecan pie. It is my favorite today, but I can't believe my parents coveted it! Or that I believed them. We still laugh about that to this day." So, enjoy your pecans this month, but please don't tell your children they can't eat pecan pie until they are adults. They might believe you!

Pen Power Day (1972): July 8

Pen Power or Power of the Pen Day honors those throughout history who have chosen to wield a pen, camera, paintbrush, or music rather than a sword in fighting for human rights, equality, and causes. The date marks the assassination anniversary of one of the Arab world's most respected writers and journalists of the mid-twentieth century, Ghassan Kanafani. Kanafani was born in British Mandate Palestine in 1936. At the age of twelve, he saw the creation of the state of Israel. His family fled the fighting to Lebanon, ultimately settling in Syria as refugees. He began working with the liberation movement during his teen years, advocating for human rights under the new Israeli government. The organization was known as the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which would later become infamous for plane hijackings. Kanafani was not part of that wing. A prolific writer, he told the story of the Palestinian experience as a journalist, as the editor of Jordan's newspaper Al Ra'i and later as the editor of Lebanon's Al-Hurriya. Like many journalists, he was also a novelist. His 1962 novel "Men in the Sun" continues to be one of the most famous and quoted works of modern Arab literature. In 1966, a year before the Six-Day War, he published a novel on life in a Gaza refugee camp entitled "All That's Left for You." Additional titles include "Umm Sa'ad" (1969) and "Return to Haifa" (1970). Kanafani believed ideas and stories were more powerful than any other form of resistance. He became one of the most respected political thinkers of the Palestinian diaspora and the Arab world. He tirelessly advocated for Palestinian rights, fighting only with the pen, never with arms. On July 8, 1972, he and his seventeen-year-old niece got into his car outside his home. As he turned the ignition, the vehicle erupted into a fireball, killing both instantly. He was thirty-six. Years later, the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad admitted they planted the bomb. History is replete with people who have risked their lives to report, draw, photograph, and write hard truths and injustices. They are novelists, journalists, photographers, filmmakers, cartoonists, musicians, and artists who use their talent to communicate ideas and facts. Even today, in the Philippines, Mexico, Egypt, Palestine, China, Russia, Turkey, and other nations, writers, reporters, and activists are jailed, assassinated, and attacked for refusing to remain quiet. Power of the Pen Day celebrates the brave man and woman choosing the pen, camera, paintbrush, or instrument as their weapon in fighting for a cause, freedom, and independence.

Penuche Fudge Day, Ntl.: July 22

National Penuche Fudge Day is a food holiday focusing on the penuche, a fudge variety native to New England. Penuche may have originated with Boston Bruins player Mark Penuche in 1924, a maple syrup lover. Some claim it is Mexican in origin as the word "penuche" derives from the Spanish word "panocha," or raw sugar. What makes penuche different from other styles of fudge? Brown instead of white sugar is used, and pecans are commonly included. With a caramel-like taste, penuche is sometimes called brown sugar fudge candy. Penuche can also be used as frosting.
