Pet Hydration Awareness Month, Ntl.: July

Your pet is 80% water, and compare that to a human who is at 60%. Like you, animals get heat exhaustion and heat stroke; unlike you, many cannot sweat to cool down. Healthy pets need 1 ounce of water for each pound of body weight. PetSafe, noting that many pets are dehydrated during the summer months, declared Nation Pet Hydration Awareness Month to educate pet parents about this serious threat to their furry, feathered, and scaled children. Pet Remembrance Day (UK): July 5

National Pet Remembrance Day in the United Kingdom is a day set aside for pet parents to celebrate the lives of their deceased and missing pets while taking time to honor all they contributed to family and quality of life. This event also raises funds for UK charity, The Oldies Club re-homes dogs over seven with forever families. Event champion Pets Magazine provides the following advice for observing this day: On Pet Remembrance Day, there are many ways in which people can remember deceased pets, including: • A memorial service in a place where the pet liked to walk or play. • A living memorial by planting a tree or flowerbed. • A pet sculpture or portrait featuring the pet or their image printed on a coaster or other accessory. • A scrapbook with photos and other reminders of the pet. • An online memorial with photos of the pet. • A poem about the pet. • Donating to charities like The Oldies Club or volunteering at an animal rescue center. National Pet Remembrance Day began in 2015.

A family pet is lost every two seconds in America, with July 5 being the day with the most entering shelters due to July 4th fireworks. One in three pets become during their lifetime, with only 10% ever found, and fewer than this making it home again. The ASPCA designated July 1 as National ID Your Pet Day to remind pet parents to ensure their pets are tagged and chipped before the July 4 holiday. After may be too late.

Pet, No Pet Store Puppies Day: July 21

The ASPCA sponsors No Pet Store Puppies Day each year. From the event website: "Puppy mill cruelty is a national problem. Tens of thousands of breeding dogs spend their lives in puppy mills and large-scale commercial breeding operations where profit is prioritized over the dogs' well-being. Dogs in these facilities are housed in tiny, overcrowded cages in unsanitary conditions, without proper veterinary care or adequate access to food and water—and many live out their entire lives without ever experiencing human affection. Female breeding dogs are bred at every opportunity with little to no time between litters for their bodies to recover, produce as many puppies as possible, and generate more profit for the mills. Their offspring may suffer from behavior, congenital, and hereditary problems due to irresponsible breeding practices. Puppies are typically sold to pet shops as young as eight weeks. Since most pet store puppies come from puppy mills, this cruelty is perpetuated every time a puppy is purchased from a pet store." The ASPCA estimates there are 6,000 to 10,000 commercial breeding facilities in the United States.

Pi Approximation Day: July 22

Pi Approximation Day is a play on numbers: the seventh month of the year and the twenty-second day of that month. Math enthusiasts celebrate this day as the standard approximation of pi: twenty-two divided by seven. Pi Approximation Day began at the Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. Pi is the mathematical constant equivalent to the 3.14159 or the diameter ratio to a circle's circumference. Pi is an irrational number; thus, it cannot be a common fraction. Since the 18th century, the Greek letter 'π' has represented pi.

Picnic Month, Ntl.: July

July is National Picnic Month in the United States, by custom rather than a mandate. Traditionally, picnic food is home-cooked or bought at a market and set up in an outdoor location for family members, organizations, or parties. The origin of picnicking is aristocratic, and these outdoor banquets were popular social events for the elite during the renaissance. The year 1692 was the first time the word picnic appeared in print in French. Today, picnics are an outdoor meal with two or more people.

Piña Colada Day: July 10

Piña Colada Day highlights the alcoholic beverage made of rum, pineapple juice, and coconut cream. Piña Colada roughly translates to "strained pineapple." The Piña Colada was concocted in 1954 by Caribe Hilton Beachcomber Bar in Puerto Rico by bartender Ramon Marrerro. He experimented with this drink for three months until he perfected the Piña Colada. By 1978, the Piña Colada was named the national drink of Puerto Rico. The first reference to "Piña Colada" was recorded in 1922, but this recipe does not contain any coconut cream.

Planet Prancer Trek to End Slavery: July-August

London teacher Ben Hammond uses his summer recess to prance and dance for charities. He came to my attention in 2018 with his ambitious attempt to cross America (over three summers) along historic Route 66 to raise awareness of the 40 million people worldwide currently enslaved. In 2018, he pranced over 1,400 miles (2,253 km), beginning in Santa Monica, California, and ending in Gallup, New Mexico. He explains his US prance's purpose. "I'm raising funds for Anti-Slavery International because to me, modern-day slavery—such as human trafficking, forced labour, debt bondage, child slavery or descent-based slavery—is one of the biggest evils that exists today. I believe everyone should have the right to live a life free from servitude, to determine their own future and to create and follow their own dreams, just as I am lucky enough to be able to do." Hammond is the world's first long-distance dancer, and he's been using his talent and tutu since 2011 to dance over mountains, nations, and cities to raise funds for various charities. COVID-19 (and getting married to his wife during it) stopped his 4,000-mile trek across America for a bit. Plastic Bag Free Day, Intl.: July 3

International Plastic Bag Free Day raises awareness of the ill effects of plastic bags on the environment. Today, people choose paper over plastic or purchase reusable grocery bags. There is also a concentrated effort to clean up parks and public spaces from all types of waste, including plastic bags. Zero Waste Europe and GAIA organize this global campaign upon an idea from the Fundació Prevenció de Residus I Consum.

Join 170+ countries worldwide in observing Plastic Free July, an event created in Australia in 2011. Participants refuse to use single-use plastic items during the month. Examples include straws, forks, plastic bags, plastic bottles, and cups. Take the month to think about the plastic you use and don't reuse. Each item that doesn't end up in our oceans or landfills is a win!
