Mabo Day (AU)(1992): June 3

Mabo Day marks the anniversary of the June 3, 1992 court ruling in Australia that affirmed native peoples held title to their land, regardless of how they chose to use it. This legal battle dates back to the 1780s and was finally spearheaded by Eddie Koiki Mabo, who sadly died five months before the ruling was announced. The Aboriginal Heritage Society explains it thus: Terra nullius (land belonging to no one) is the legal concept that Indigenous peoples did not own Australia and the Torres Strait Islands because they did not 'use' the land in ways Europeans believed constituted some legal possession, thus giving 'legitimacy' to the British colonial and Australian governments to allow the dispossession of all Indigenous peoples of their land. Whether an Aboriginal group lost its land to colonial settlement and invasion in 1788, 1880, or 1970, the argument was that they never owned it, never had an internationally recognizable legal entitlement to it, and therefore could be considered trespassers on Crown land and would not be able to claim any compensation for its loss. Koiki Mabo and his legal team fought hard to demonstrate that he and his people had traditional land ownership systems on Mer. The case went to the High Court. Unfortunately, Eddie Mabo died five months before the historic decision came on June 3, 1992, that 'native title' did exist, and it was up to the people of Mer to determine who owned the land. In 2002, Eddie's wife, Bonita Mabo, called for a national public holiday. Eddie and Bonita’s son, Eddie Mabo Jr. She said: "We believe that a public holiday would be fitting to honor and recognize the contribution to the High Court decision of not only my father and his co-plaintiffs, James Rice, Father Dave Passi, Sam Passi, and Celuia Salee, but also to acknowledge all Indigenous Australians who have empowered and inspired each other."

The first Stanley Cup was held in 1892, backed by Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor of Canada at the time. Business Etiquette Week, Ntl.: June 4-10

I remember attending my first networking event as a salesperson in 1993 and was entirely overwhelmed by the idea. "What does networking mean?" I asked. "How do I do it, and is there a proper way to do it or not to do it?" Like most people, I rarely received answers to my questions, so I learned. Jumping in, making many mistakes, and finally researching proper etiquette for business. My fumbling in those first few years paid off. I was quite successful in media sales, and it was due to networking and following established protocols. What worked in the US, however, only sometimes works elsewhere. Business etiquette changes from nation to nation. My second lesson in business etiquette came through a friend who recently completed her Ph.D. in international diplomacy. To get LEEP Calendar off the ground, I took a good-paying job in the Middle East and spent a large percentage of my paycheck, weekends, and evenings building the company over four years. In the weeks leading up to my arrival later in the summer of 2014, I discovered how to "open mouth and insert foot" quite well. What exists as good manners in the United States sometimes fails to translate overseas. Now I'm learning business etiquette again, with a Middle Eastern flair. It is easy to offend inadvertently. What did I do? In my excitement and attempt to explain what I would be doing to Westerners, I worded it so that, upon reflection, coming from an American would seem arrogant and dismissive to another culture. "Laura, you are going to offend them with that statement," my friend, an expert in the culture, scolded me. "But, I was just trying to explain it so people here will understand it," I protested. I thought I was complimentary by being excited and simplifying my job role. It turns out it would be taken offensively. Americans have a reputation for being arrogant overseas, so a douse of humility goes a long way. "That's why you're in marketing and I'm in diplomacy!" she added. "You need to learn when to sell and when to respect." Aye, meu Deus! For anyone in business (or politics), knowing the proper protocols in a situation can mean the difference between success and failure. Etiquette exists to help us navigate various social situations successfully, even if we're unfamiliar with the culture, whether national or corporate. It provides us with a roadmap of acceptability that is familiar and respectful. Cancer Survivors Day: June 4

On International Cancer Survivors Day, cancer survivors across the globe will unite to show the world what life after cancer looks like. Thousands of people in hundreds of communities across the US and abroad will hold celebrations on this day to honor cancer survivors and to show that there is life after a cancer diagnosis – and it's something to celebrate. National Cancer Survivors Day is an annual worldwide Celebration of Life. It is the one day each year that we unite to honor everyone with a history of cancer—including America's 14 million cancer survivors. "A survivor is anyone living with a history of cancer—from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life," according to the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation, administrator for the celebration. NCSD allows cancer survivors to connect with other survivors, celebrate milestones, and recognize the healthcare providers, family, and friends who have supported them. It is a day for cancer survivors to stand together and show the world what life after cancer looks like. "Sometimes people have very negative ideas of what life after cancer looks like," says Foundation spokesperson Laura Shipp. "But the reality is that more people are living longer and better quality lives after cancer than ever before. These survivors show us that life after cancer can be meaningful, exciting, and joyful. "National Cancer Survivors Day is an opportunity for cancer survivors to come together and celebrate this new reality in cancer survivorship. There is life after cancer. It may not be the same as before cancer, but it can be beautiful, rewarding, and sometimes even better than before. And that's something to celebrate." NCSD activities will be as diverse as the communities where the events are being held and will include parades, carnivals, walks, races, art exhibits, health fairs, inspirational programs, and more. There will be laughter and tears, shouts of joy and moments of quiet reflection, hope for the future and strength to endure today, and maybe even a little music and dancing. The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation encourages everyone to participate in their community's events. To locate the nearest one, check with your local cancer treatment center, hospital, or American Cancer Society office. Or you can host an event of your own. The NCSD website, ncsd.org, has everything you need to plan a successful NCSD celebration. NCSD started in the United States in 1987 and is now celebrated worldwide in countries including Canada, Australia, India, South Africa, Greece, Great Britain, Spain, and Nigeria, according to Shipp. The nonprofit National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation provides free guidance, education, and support to hundreds of hospitals, support groups, and other cancer-related organizations that host National Cancer Survivors Day events in their communities. The Foundation's primary mission is to bring awareness to cancer survivorship issues to better the quality of life for cancer survivors. Cancer survivors may face physical, emotional, social, and financial challenges due to their cancer diagnosis and treatment. Many have limited access to specialists, a lack of information about promising new treatments, inadequate or no insurance, difficulty finding employment, and psychosocial struggles. "To say that cancer is challenging is an understatement," says Shipp. "But it is a challenge that millions of people – 14 million in the US alone – are overcoming. The NCSD Foundation hopes that through National Cancer Survivors Day, we can not only bring awareness to the issues survivors face but also honor for the courage and strength of all those who are living with a history of cancer." The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation is encouraging a greater commitment to resolving quality-of-life issues for cancer survivors. "More resources, research, and increased public awareness are needed to improve the quality of life of cancer survivors," says Shipp. "Because of advances in modern medicine, cancer survivors are now living much longer after diagnosis. However, long-term survivorship poses its own unique challenges. We need to do a better job of addressing the hardships survivors face beyond treatment." Leading up to the event, the Foundation urges everyone—cancer survivors and supporters alike—to show the world what life after cancer looks like.

Child Victims of Aggression, World Day of (1982): June 4

World Day of Child Victims of Aggression brings to light children's suffering, particularly those who are victims of war and abuse. It is a United Nations (UN) affirmation to safeguard children's rights in peace and war. Many organizations, celebrities, and VIPs work together to affect positive action toward improving child welfare. This UN awareness campaign began on August 19, 1982, when the General Assembly observed the immense number of Palestinian and Lebanese children who had become victims of Israel's latest war on its northern neighbor. The event that shocked the world was the massacres of the Sabra neighborhood and the Shatila refugee camp in Beirut. SABRA & SHATILA In concert with Phalanges Christian Lebanese militias, Israeli forces supervised and assisted in two and a half days of horror that led to the slaughter of over 3,000 people during what was supposed to be a cease-fire. The massacre is considered a war crime. Afterward, June 4 became a reminder and applied to children globally as the World Day of Child Victims of Aggression. June 4, 1982, is the anniversary of the first bombing in this war by Israel of Lebanon. It occurred two days before the official declaration and is considered the commencement of the siege of Beirut. During its first ten days, June 4-14, 1982, the International Red Cross reported 9,583 people killed and another 16,608 injured, 80 percent of whom were civilians.
