"Wear it. Beat it," is a British Heart Foundation (BHF) promotion within the UK each year that promotes wearing red during the month to fund heart research. Get together with friends, family, and colleagues, and add red to the dress code. Whether it's a red wig, a scarlet dress, or a crimson tie, however, you decide to wear red, you'll be supporting our life-saving research. You can even go the extra mile by hosting a red bake sale, a red raffle, or a red fancy dress competition to raise some extra cash. In 2018, this event moved from a daily to a monthly event. The money raised supports BHF's life-saving research.

Zoo & Aquarium Month, Ntl.: June

President Ronald Reagan designated June as Zoo and Aquarium Month in 1982. This celebration has since been observed every June and is supported by zoos and aquariums nationwide. The first zoo to open in the United States was the Philadelphia Zoo on July 1, 1874. At the time, it had 1,000 animals, and today it has over 1,300.

Doughnut Day, Ntl.: June 2

National Donut (Doughnut) Day commemorates a 1938 marketing campaign deployed by the Salvation Army and created by Dr. Morgan Pett during WWI. National Donut Day began as a gesture by Morgan Pett, a military doctor treating wounded soldiers during the First World War. As he was helping the soldiers, he would give a donut to raise their spirits. One soldier who particularly appreciated the gesture was Lieutenant General Samuel Geary. He and Pett later created a fundraiser to make sure every injured soldier treated received the ‘edible lifesaver’ we call a donut. This gesture caught the attention of the Salvation Army, who, in turn, began using it with the soldiers assigned in France starting in 1938. During National Donut Day, shops offer free donuts to customers.

Gun Violence Awareness Day, Ntl.(1998): June 2

Wear Orange on June 2 to honor the memory of the over 30,000 people a year that die from gun violence in the United States (with an additional 70,000+ injured). Of these, 33 percent are homicides, and 66 percent are accidental. National Gun Violence Awareness Day takes place on the birthday of Hadiya Pendleton (June 2, 1998). Hadiya died by gunfire on January 21, 2013, at 15.

Hristo Botev Day (BG)(1876): June 2

June 2, each year, from noon to 12:03 PM, the nation of Bulgaria sounds its air raid sirens to honor a national hero, Hristo Botev. The entire country comes to a stop. Botev was a 28-year-old poet and a patriot killed in battle against the Ottoman Empire at Stara Planina near Vratza. A national hero, he is honored each year on the anniversary of his death.

Native American Citizenship Day (1924): June 2

It was a long road, with over 90 percent of the population decimated via disease and war between 1492 and 1900; on June 2, 1924, President Calvin Coolidge finally made Native Americans citizens of the United States. Today is a celebration of that event. It would take several more decades for Native Americans to fully achieve these rights as laws in several states still discriminated against them.

Old Time Music Ozark Heritage Festival (US-MO): June 2-3

The Old-Time Music Ozark Heritage Festival is the signature event in West Plains. The two-day festival celebrates, preserves, and passes on an appreciation of the old-time music and folk life traditions distinctive to the Ozark Highlands. Folk music has its distinctive sound and contributes to the complex palette of indigenous American music. Musicians, artisans, and storytellers from throughout the state come to the West Plains festival in enthusiastic support of creating a place to listen, watch, interact, and honor the old-time traditions of the Southern Ozarks communities. Activities include the Fiddlers' Frolic, quilting competitions, beard competitions, mule jump, jig dancing, square dancing, street performances, Dutch oven workshops, a bucket brigade, and children's activities.
